Gin's musical director/guitarist is also an expat Kiwi, so not a totally American setting for her.

I've tried PMing but no joy so will try again in a day or so.

Any chance of a picture?
Cheers.

The former TVNZ telethon studios. So it should sound good, it's absolutely cavernous and purpose built.

Yup, try Turned On in Onehunga.

Still no toilets though, ultimately limiting the length of one’s visit…Sondek, they do, behind the LP trades counter but you're famously only allowed to do Number Ones.

Beck's "Morning Phase"
Reverb-soaked classical/pop goodness.

;-) sorry, maybe I was harsh. I generally prefer more dangerous things but I do love ABBA.

it seems good male singers are not in great abundance at present.
They are, just not new ones. I'd be quite happy if Brooke Fraser covered Taylor Swift in concrete :-)
YMMV!

To be blunt, get a 12" instead. I suggest the one with Lean On Me. You might find - as I did - their repeated use of the same drumbeat wears thin pretty soon and masks the actual tunes.
YMMV!

I imagine you've looked here already, HFH??

I've seen his posts on Steve Hoffman too. "I love gear!" he once said.

Yes, I came across some similar PC-mad differences that concern a cuss-ridden track on Marianne Faithfull's Broken English. I think the more you look for this sort of thing, the more you may find it.

It is bad but anyone in a band will recognise they have put in some effort to get that far. Just not enough!

my other concern with perreaux is there seem to be a lot of near new ones being sold on TM.That's how I could afford mine, nearly 10 years ago. If the seller is in Manukau City it could be they are guaranteed ex-demo units. Nothing to be concerned about or Perreaux in general. IMO.

Lots of interesting points to consider. Ernie, I might be!
I think the Leaks have edged ahead, so far.

Thanks for your replies, very helpful.
Yes HFH, it will be an interesting journey through the past. I realised that out of the the last 10 LPs I've bought, most are mono - some by choice (Aretha reissue, Blonde on Blonde reissue, some Beatles) and some because it was music I liked that happened to be mono (Bobby Darin, James Hunter Six). I thought I'd better do them justice.
Owen, I was already erring on the side of the Leak so I'm glad you've endorsed that. I would definitely get everything serviced before use, I know the odd semi-retired valve guru.
Speaking of Aretha, Owen, since we discussed the 4MWB reissue of "Never Loved", I've bought the Rhino mono reissue (different mix, no gatefold) and a '60s mono original US pressing that is so loud I almost fell over! The Rhino is lovely though, I recommend it although my ears aren't renowned for their critical greatness. Nice to compare the three; like children, all have their strengths. Even nicer to line them up on a shelf. Pink fluffy Aretha in triplicate!

All I know about valves relates to guitar amps so I'm after some advice, please. Anything uber-technical would be wasted on me so info of a basic nature would be most useful.
I want a dedicated mono set-up that would be a Garrard 301 followed by either a Leak TL12 pre/power or a Quad II pre/power.
The speaker and cabinet is as yet undecided but likely a combo containing Goodmans Trebax 100/Midex 650/Whiteley Stentorian.
So, I guess the main question is: based on sound quality, original build quality and ease of future repairs, should I look more at Leak or Quad?
Does either brand have sound hallmarks that could be described in terms an LP12/SS-amps listener could easily relate to? (Of course, I don't expect many similarities.)
Many thanks in advance,
MonoDom

Haha, very well written, but by an audiophile or a comedian???

I've tried PMing you as I am potentially interested in the bits and pieces but that does not seem possible at present.DDThe page you are trying to reach does not exist, or has been moved. Please use the menus or the search box to find what you are looking for.

Nothing wrong with a nice Happy Valentine's "selfie," Graham. :-)

The sound of dead fish falling at the feet of the world’s littlest man has kept me happy so far.eh?I am thoroughly enjoying the disrespect shown to the Prime Minister (dead fish thrown in his path) on his visit to Waitangi.

I just bought a pretty crap $20 box to do exactly that but with 3RCAs each for unit. I use it to switch between the DVD player (output 1), freeview box (output 2) and telly (input). Surplustronics in AK has them and also sells them on TM as well as other traders, some a lot more expensive. While fine for dumb telly I would not use one for audio. Thought of making one?

A long time between drinks but a shrinkwrapped, opened copy of Atlantic SD 8214 landed on my doorstep on Friday. NM/VG+ and has the original advert inner sleeve. The LP has the odd scratch but so did the great woman. I'm well happy with that for roughly $45.
Great SQ, more homogenous than the 4MWB, which seems a little "spitty" although I only compared an inner track. Can't wait til it's cleaned.
Happy Daddy
