It comes right when I switch between sources, so I'm thinking it must be dirty connections.

Did you mean Denon PMA 250 ??

    rotary or pushbutton source selector??

**Be careful with contact cleaner & old pots. Some pots dont like contact cleaner.

**Dont use "Electrical Cleaner", it can melt some plastics

Sounds like you have traced the probable cause there...

try giving the source selector a good thrashing, just back and forth for a 30secounds or so.

I guess that that part will be a one off, with no easy 'of the shelf' replacement & probably

is soldered directly onto a pcb to make it even harder to fix.

You could try hard wiring it to just one source input (bypass the selector switch) & see how it goes then.

When I was building DIY amps, I had no end of troubles with unreliable locally sourced rotary switches. No amount of contact cleaner would fix them.

  2. If you want to guarantee compatibility & have good customization of buttons : get a Harmony

But.. I have a 785: buttons are far too small & have terrible feel to them

The Harmony One looks really good, button wize (size & layout) but its not cheap

Philips SRU5150 has a great layout, good size buttons with nice click feel. Most of the 'devices' work without learning (had to learn manually 'learn' SkyTv & erase for DVDR)

Only bad point is lack of next/prev track buutons for cd/dvd (fast fwd/rwd only)

Now 1/2 price at Dick Smith

Even tho the Philips isnt as smart as the Harmony, I tend to use it more as the layout & nice size buttons make it a joy to use.

**whatever you get, you want the vol & channel+- buttons at the bottom or mid, just for that essential one handed operation.

I certainly am not going to say anything on his auction as it's far more civilized to discuss it here;)

I find his other auction rather amusing:

I have seen probably 8 of these "in the flesh" in NZ (though I must admit not all in true mint condition).

Regards the Who Album, I dont remember records of this era (60's,70's) being shrinkwrapped

I am I wrong(60's was before my record buying age), Its been a while.

The seller is certainly taking all the comments in good humour

  4. The skin effect in thinner solid cable at audio freq is neglible (in theory)

But the 'master' would disagree with me

    http://www.geocities.com/jonrisch/c1.htm

You need(want) plenum Cat5 for audio.

    from the 'gurus' webpage

    -Insulator Materials-

    ================================

    -Inner Conductor Insulation-

    In descending order of preference:

    Foamed Teflon (TFE)

    Solid Teflon (TFE)

    Foamed FEP Teflon

    Solid FEP Teflon

Foamed Polypropylene / These two are real close

    Solid Polypropylene

    Foamed Polyethylene

NOT RECOMMENDED FOR SERIOUS AUDIO USE AT ALL:

    Solid Polyethylene

    Rubber

PVC (Polyvinylchoride) These two actually attack most conductors

Polyurethane / over a period of time, the severity

    depending on the exact formulation.

I wouldn't rule out external amplification.

I'm in the process of doing this at the moment. If you thought your sub was good before, wait till you hear it with 'decent' power....

You'll also hear the benefit of having the signal only pass through one Low Pass filter,

instead of 2 (amps filter & subs filter)

  6. Has anyone forgotten just how bad (cheapy) cassette tapes could be.

Would make even the worst mp3 sound good in comparison.

Yet 99% of Joe Public would not notice any 'fidelity' issues on their well used tape, even when played in a 'hi-speced' system.

I allways remember being in a Stereo shop when a guy came in wanting to buy a good system (separates) & then pulled out his old cassette tape for the demo.

The salesman could be heard muttering about how pre-recorded tapes arnt hifi & shoulndt be allowed to be sold.

And again, the music industry Moguls fail to mention the rampant Piracy with tape didnt cause the widely exaggerated lost sales they claim today with MP3's. It would bet there was significantly more piracy back then than today.

Nowdays the choice is: buy CD or DVD or PC Game or console game(or rent DVD). Young Joe Public has alot more choices (than just CD's) where to spend that personal entertainment $....

Back then it was a spend choice of tape or LP.

The Wharehaouse Albany have made a complete hash of their CD/DVD dept (It was quite good). It's is almost as if they just dropped everything from the roof & stacked it where it landed, rather chaotic & unfriendly layout. Hate it, wont go there anymore for CD's.

If EHF don't have the speakers they sold you, they should source them, supply them, and bear the cost.

Perhaps this debate needs to be put in perspective. An honest mistake, no money changed hands. No one is really any worse off :making any sort of Disputes Tribunal claim a nonsense.

I dont think its reasonable to expect them to supply goods that they (possibly) dont have

"Superceded sub/sat speaker system priced to clear", this alone would tell me that they probhably wont be able to substitute something newer/better/the same.

    Quoted from the consumer site

"The Fair Trading Act requires traders to honestly describe the goods they sell....."

Since the mistake was an honest mistake, and no money has changed hands perhaps the

The Fair Trading Act/CGA wont apply.

    Hi all,

I have an older Denon receiver (AVR2802) and I'm wondering if it is an advantage to use the pre out capability and use external amps to improve the overall performance or should I look at spending the cash on a newer model.

You will still be stuck with the sound of the older/cheaper Denon pre-out.There is alot of circuitry in 5.1 amps that the signal has to pass through before the pre-out.

You could allways get a poweramp & just run it off a passive preamp, using this for CD (assuming you dont have turntable) Use the denon for HT & Tuner: these sources arnt exactly hi-end hifi anyway (both highly processed/compressed sources)

Easiest way would be looking at a HT amp that has reasonable stereo sound. There are bargains to be had on trademe if you are willing to wait up to 2-3 months for what you want at a good price.

  10. Another easy DIY cable you may want to try is solid core copper mains cable (as used in house wiring). Ive an old HIFI mag were they reviewed it along side big name cables costing in the hundreds of $ per meter .. got a reasonable review I thought (& then you factor in the cost)

Plenum teflon cat 5 supposedly sounds so much better than normal cat5.

Pitty its so hard to obtain in NZ (or is it???)

If I could get some locally I'd try the some of the more complex (time consuming, blister inducing) twisted constructions.

Perhaps a group buy of a 100m roll is worth considering.

  11. Bear in mind what they cost......

They are obviously budget speakers, I wouldnt expect killer sound from them.

Not that I expect that much from a 3 inch driver. Good enough for the TV or PC.

They're on my list I things to buy (damn the recession)

I am looking for a universal remote. Something better than the Logitech options. I have read a little on the four main brands that seem to be available in NZ. RTI , Marantz, Prontos, and the Nevo S70.

At the moment I am leaning towards the Nevo because it is seems like it might be easier for me to program and price seems alot better.

Any one have experience with these remotes?

You want to think about the device code Library's that these brands have. Logitech is hard to beat in this respect. Nothing worse than having to spend hours manualy 'learning' every button off your original remotes, or find the built in codes dont match all the orignal buttons.
