haha i refuse to buy anything from jaycar.. anything you can buy at jaycar you can find on ebay or aliexpress for 1/50th of the price
im looking for something hifi quality, the plugs i have at the moment are better connections than the one from jaycar.. thankyou for the link though

hey there, i am getting bored in isolation and need to start a diy project so i am going to make some better quality power cables.
does anyone know of where i could get some high quality, reasonably priced australian parts? specifically male and female iec connections.. i am using a rackmounted power conditioner which has iec outputs so i need to use female iec to male iec.
and i also need one switch socket outlet.
not wanting to pay furutech prices.. haha not anywhere near that.
also i should add that i am currently using medical/hospital grade ones that a tech mate who works at a hospital gave me
thankyou

They are PCM1794 NOS with 22 DAC chips stacking for most refined SQ. I2S direct from ARM board render/server.
That is quite possibly the coolest DIY thing I have ever seen. I hope to one day have your knowledge! We should be friends

In the digital domain, optical is more prone to jitter, but noise in power supplies is rarely an issue. You will still get ground loops with expensive linear power supplies and most people who complain about noise with PC setups have no idea how to work with ground loops. If you are running an analog output from the pc into a balanced input preamp, you can use that to solve the problem
i am going from usb out of the motherboard to a dac.
onboard soundcards sound really bad to me.
i also have another dac hooked up to a different computer via firewire. it sounds fantastic. not sure if firewire has any benefits over usb

recording studios are becoming redundant also... instead of recording through a 200k mixer, 75k tape machine and nice microphones, real drummers and real pianos...
now people use $200 usb interfaces, do all the mixing in the daw (cubase, reason, pro tools, logic) and use a midi keyboard for drums, piano... a $500 condenser mic and some cheap krk studio monitors. or even just headphones...
no wonder modern music is getting worse.

There is some technical merit to this approach and I wish it were borne out however in my experience the optical connection you are referring to consistently underperforms (in terms of SQ) compared to other connection methods regardless of the superior galvanic isolation. Not aware of many high end units/manufacturers that propose toslink as the best solution. Very expensive overengineered and intricate power supplies are plentiful however.
i may be wrong but optical is the least capable of high resolution? it only goes to 96khz? where as digital coaxial is double that at 192. aes/ebu is again double digital coaxial? and usb and I2S are capable of much much higher?
i was using optical from another motherboard into a pre/pro for my home theatre and then switched it to hdmi.
optical did sound better for non hd formats.. but then when using the hdmi for hd formats it outperformed the optical (toslink) (adat) haha not sure what to call it anymore

Don't worry about any particular power supplies/motherboards. The noise people complain about comes from ground loops, and as the ground from PC audio is always earthed, it can cause problems with other earthed audio gear
If this is a problem, the easiest way to overcome it is to use an optical connection, either from the onboard sound, or you can get a $50 USB sound card with optical out (Search for CM6631)
problem with that is, i cant do dsd via optical. im limited to 88.2? i think. or 96 maybe.
i was thinking maybe something like this would remove any noise
-
that looks like a good solution,
i mean it doesnt seem to have much benefit for audio compared to what i was using.
considering i have a few processors and a lot of ddr3 ram on hand maybe it would be good to just buy a 1155 mobo or 1150 mobo for $20-$30 off newegg or something. the thing would then be pricing as far as having to buy a bigger linear psu or buying the mobo/cpu you mentioned above and work out what would end up being cheaper
i have a few i7's and i5's so i could beef up the pc.. not sure if i would need too with what i am doing..
playing some dsd files.. and highest resolution audio files i can find. some sacd.iso files and wav files too.

That's a nice supply and many think it sounds pretty good. It gives lots of flexibility. As I said previously your choice of cpu will depend on what you need it to do. perhaps you could share how your previous streamer was setup such as OS and any ancillary cards and what software you were running.
Bottom line is you are not limited by the motherboard as you can can use a pico power adapter to run mb;s that have a molex power connector.
im using snakeoil os
2-4gb ram, a pentium g3258 dual core..
no extra cards.
was just using a usb out into a dac. no screen either
and a ssd

im thinking something like this
https://hdplex.com/hdplex-fanless-300w-linear-power-supply-for-pc-audio-and-ce-device.html
what motherboard will take this?

ok may be gone then
so the question now is, which motherboard to purchase as a replacement?
something i can use ddr3 ram, either 1155 pin cpu or 1150 pin.
nice usb ports and something i can add a linear power supply later
-
i think its just gone, i removed the cmos jumper, put it back
cant think of what else to do.
tried 3 different power supplies. removed everything.
no boot up, nothing coming up on screen

yep, i took a video. just wondering how to upload it
-
not even getting that far.. it just spins for less than a second

Does seem to be pointing to CPU or motherboard.
Edit: I no longer do PC audio, but I have had good reliability from Gigabyte boards, have one that served me for 11 years till recently without failure.
do you know what motherboards i am talking about?
they dont use atx power supplies. they use laptop style power supplies.. like an nuc does.
and you can get linear power supplies for them.
micro itx maybe?
trying to figure it out

It's a mini laptop dedicated for hifi only. It sounds fantastic as is. I mightheck snakeoil out and also see how I can customise foobar.
depending on what quality you need, kodi is the best as far as ease of use.
once set up properly and using yatse remote.. it makes life so simple. there is a tidal addon also

You say have replaced the ram and pay, what is pay?
Are the CPU temps OK?
If not try removing and re-seating the CPU and apply new heat paste to the heat sink and reinstall it.
If OK, try removing all add in cards (except the video card if there is one, but remove and then re-seat it in the slot) and disconnect all hard drives (data and power cables), and leave in only one ram module, then try booting up, if that is OK and you can boot into the BIOS, start adding things one by one, operating system hard drive first.
sorry that autocorrected.. pay was supposed to be psu.
i redid the thermal paste a month or so ago..
i cant check the temps as it wont boot into anything..
already a very bare pc, no cards at all
just a ssd, cpu and ram.

are you using it for audio while using your pc? or is it for a dedicated hifi pc?
i started with windows and foobar, then tried a few standalone operating systems, daphile is really good and simple. the best sound i got out of all operating systems and distros was snakeoil os. particularly using the mdp fs.
something special happened when i started using that, it turned everything 3d.
i guess any linux distro using mdp would be the same. pretty sure bryston uses mdp for their streamers.
with snakeoil you have the choice of so many players, roon bridge, lms, mpd... just to name a few.
i highly recommend

Hello all.
Somehow my music streamer motherboard has carked itself. I have replaced the ram and pay and it's still not going. The CPU fan will spin but stops immediately. For some reason it I plug in my phone via usb port it will still charge? Of anyone knows what that could be could you please let me know?
So I was thinking of upgrading to a more hifi capable motherboard. I'm abit out of touch with computer tech.
I know people say that ATX power supplies are not ideal for hifi PC's
What is the type of motherboard that takes external power supplies? Like the hdplex linear supplies?
I have seen some gigabyt motherboards have a dac-up or amp-up usb capabilities with nichicon caps.. any help would be much appreciated.
I have a few 1155 pin CPU's and a few 1150 CPU's
I only have ddr3 ram chips.
Thanks again

I had similar once in Melbourne you must get abrupt . Knock on his door ask to see it . If he can't produce it call the police have your deposit receipt handy if there is one . Do you have a big ugly mean son a ***** looking mate you can take with you for effect , I've played that part many a time it's great fun . Don't threaten just intimidate.
im a 6'4" 100kg fit man, i just dont have an angry or agressive bone in my body.
i do have some mates that will let him have it (verbally) if it comes to that,
i was given no receipt, the only thing i have is messgaes on here from before he was banned
im sure a few people already know who i am talking about when i say south sydney technician.
i dont know why people like this work in jobs where they need to coominicate with the people. if you are moody or have some sort of mental health issues then get a job in a field where you dont have to deal with the public.
i work in sales, and nooo way would i still have my job if i spoke to customers the way i have been spoken to

sorry if i posted in the wrong section
i am having a problem.
last january (2019) i had given a certain sydney technician (not naming names... he is banned from sna now, wasnt at the time) my recording studio power amp for repair of one channel.
i have called him roughly every two weeks to check progress, every time i call there is a different excuse of why he hasnt started/finished it.
i called again this week to be spoken to extremely rudely and then hung up on.
i am moving interstate for a bit in two weeks and this particular person does not respond to my emails.
what are my options? call the department of fair trading? call theh police? turn up there with a witness?
i am a nice person who has had some really bad luck with my hifi equipent over the papst 12 months. as many people would have read i was burgled and lost 90% of my expensive gear.
another thing i had mentioned to him as why i needed that amplifier back and still, i had constant promises of yes it will be done by the end of the week.
just wondering if anyone else has been in a similar situation and what you did do?
considering he didnt give me any sort of quote, i am abit scared to go off at him incase he decides to charge me a bucketload.

I would say okay for desktop use, but as studio monitors I don't know how flat they are.
Could always give them a go.
I have Equinox I've used on my desk and have been happy, but I felt they do need help down low.
yeh ofcourse, i cant imagine any speakers that size are going to give you full range.
maybe dynaudios or sonus fabers

DIY power cable parts.

there seems to be a few different types of cheap looking ones but nothing worth upgrading to..
i guess not much eqipment uses male iec's.. i know with brands like furman and art power conditioners that they use them so they can have the same model product universally with only needing to change the voltage.
from searching i have really only found a few different pre made ones,
this is the type i am currently using
https://www.lindy.com.au/medical-power-cable-c14-plug-to-c13-socket-0-5m?gclid=Cj0KCQjw4dr0BRCxARIsAKUNjWQEVDaaeC0aqpKnaq_d1JC5OmZuYqVmAeKtq-643JI6wL3uQ9BayKIaAvxyEALw_wcB
and it looks as though furman make their own
