I have 4 thin clients that aren't really powerful enough for windows and linux video drivers are funny. However I set one up as a headless streamer and I'm quite impressed.
They are model wyze zxo and gt52r and I've tried daphile and snakeoil os
Wondering if anyone has used these before?
I think I'm going to keep one and sell the other 3 if anyone is interested? Probably $35 each
I will put it in the classifieds I just wanted to know if it's worth doing
I also have an old technics amp , the su-v2 new class a amplifier. Does anyone know if it is worth anything?

I have one in my system. To get me to part with it would see me having to spend a ship load of money.
Elegant and quirky, if your system is not made up of stratospherically priced gear, buy it.
You are talking me into keeping it

Further information: I have been using this for about 2 years. It is great and non coloured at all.
I have only ever used a mm with this so I can't comment on the mc side of things.
I bought this from someone on here in December 2019. I can't find the ad but if anyone can I will change it to whatever price I bought it for.
from memory it was 350 or 400.
these are becoming more rare and definitely a conversation piece.

Using an Intel NUC, with SSD for SnakeOil OS, USB to Kii Three. No hard drives plugged into NUC. My music is on a Synology NAS.
Usually use Mpd for stereo music, LMS + upmodcli for Tidal access, and MinimServer for playing multi channel music to my Panasonic BD player (UPnP renderer).
Ok currently we have similar setups, I wonder how snakeoil will play using a rpi4 with pi2aes hat using the i2s output

Found that MinimServer on SO machine better than on NAS. Note that MinimServer starter edition is free but sufficient for your testing.
What did you use as UPnP server?
Do you have your hard drives plugged into your so streamer?

@anewmission, suggest you test the following and compare SQ?
- Mpd on SnakeOil (SO)
- MinimServer (SO) + upmpdcli (SO)
- KODI machine to upmpdcli (SO)
- KODI installed on SO
- KODI (SO) + Upmpdcli SO)
You can do 1, 2, 3 already. 1 vs 2 will give difference between Mpd and Upmpdcli. 2 vs 3 will compare 2 UPnP servers. 3 vs 5 will show whether running KODI on SO can impact SQ. 1 vs 4 is a direct compare of Mpd and KODI as players.
i have done the first two, not a huge difference between mpd and upmpdcli
i might get a nas that i can install minimserver on? would that be a good idea
i have decided to go for the denafrips pontus. as long as it can be plugged directly into my power amp

SnakeOil 1.2 Beta is now on Ubuntu 20.04. You could perhaps follow the links below, but note that my Linux knowledge is limited to following instructions and Googling for help !
https://linuxhint.com/install_plex_ubuntu-2/
https://linuxconfig.org/how-to-install-kodi-on-ubuntu-20-04-focal-fossa-linux
I believe both can play to UPnP renderers, so can use upmpdcli as the player. ** But not sure how this can work with audio from video source??? **
More importantly, do not know how it impacts music SQ because anything involving video is likely to be resource heavy. Maybe only start Kodi or Plex when you need it???
Yeah I sometimes cast from upmpdcli via bubbleupnp to kodi. However the music drives are stored on the kodi machine and the minimserver is set up on the snakeoil machine . Haha so it's going back and forth. I don't know why but playing things to kodi via upnp always sounds thinner to me than playing directly from kodi's in built music player

I am about to switch the i2s over hdmi instead of usb.
Well, if my plan works out. Still on the hunt for an i2s dac with a few analog inputs also

Why not install Plex or Kodi within SnakeOil OS?
How would you install kodi within snakeoil? And would that use mpd for audio or just kodi's renderers? I have often wondered if I could somehow install the mpd wrapper within kodi.
People on the kodi/libreelec forums aren't so much into audio

really that much different now? I tried comparing 2-3 years ago and barely can tell the difference
I even tested this on a very non audiophile type. They said mpd was so obviously better it wasn't even funny

I tend to prefer the native PCM sampling rate, I never prefer PCM upsampled to DSD.
IMO upsampling to DSD leads to a drop in dynamics and leading edges.
But If you prefer vinyl DSD upsampling could sound subjectively better.
I do prefer vinyl, but I listen to alot more digital for convenience.
I am still trying to work out if all dsd is upsampled from pcm or if there is a way they convert straight from their master tapes to dsd. If I knew the concrete answer I probably wouldn't care about dsd

what about denafrips Dac?
https://www.vinshineaudio.com/product-page/denafrips-pontus-r2r-dacI have been looking at the denafrips stuff for a few weeks. I have never heard an r2r dac before. To me they look like alot of effort to maintain but I g n again I'm probably wrong

I wouldn’t get to stuck on I2s.
Spdif is also very good. You might get a 5% improvement.
The DAC selection is more important than using I2s, IMO.Coax is capped at pcm though .
I know everyone will probably say I cant hear the difference in bit rate. Still for piece of mind

Listed at $250+

This seems to be a real nice piece of kit, I wish it had the i2s connection. I have tested both usb and i2s on both a psaudio directstream and a trinov altitude through focal sopra 3s and the i2s sounds much better.

@anewmission maybe take a look at a NAD c658. It’s a preamp with a dac will do HT bypass, has an inbuilt Bluesound streamer and has an integrated phono stage, all with Dirac Live room correction.
The best of all, it’s significantly cheaper than the PS audio stellar Pre.
Have you ever just had a bad experience with one product from a brand and you just can't justify getting another piece of their equipment?
It does look very nice, and I would be keen to have a listen

I guess when you’re limiting your options to suit a $200 streamer it might require a solution rethink.
OP is chasing a phono solution too. You could put that money into something like the Brooklyn Bridge and toss the Pi.
I have a pc based streamer at the moment.
I could add a pink faun i2s card and a new power supply but that is going to cost me possibly over $1000 and the pink faun cards are capped at 192k pcm.
With a rpi4 I can get the pi, the i2s streamer hat and a linear power supply for under $600.
The reason I like diy streamers is because I can tinker with the backend.
Snakeoil os is perfect for this. I started with lms and then tried mpd using upmpdcli over upnp and I almost fell over.
Every different power supple made a difference in sound and having the ability to do things like the ram playback option really changed the game too.
Usb has become too fiddly for me.
Living snakeoil os, I would love a streaming os to have film clip functions, so filmclips from youtube, spotify and tidal could be watched from your streamer as well as having the quality audio from your dac.
Which is things I think will be implemented in diy streaming operating systems in the future and why I will stick with diy streamers
