Recommend Me A Screen
WalamusPrime replied to orrelljet's topic in Televisions, Projectors & Screens
If you wanted a 16:9 110" screen with a guaranteed long leader you could have bought a 120" 4:3 screen (projecting a 16:9 will give a 110" picture). 4:3 screens tend to be a bit cheaper. I've done this with an ebay cheapie screen (paid about $250), only issue I have is the quality of the screen itself, hot spots and creases, now I'm considering painting it to make it better. You could still do this with a quality 4:3 screen... but you'd basically be missing the top border frame, so you'd have to paint one on or something if you cared. -

I opened up my W1000 today to see if I could sort out this dust blob I've had for a while. Few squirts with the compressed air around the colour wheel section and presto, the chunky bit of dust is now gone. No more dust blob for me! Found it surprisingly easy to open up, and leaves no indication that it has been opened. I am currently having another issue though for the past few months, where the image is randomly flickering between lighter/darker during video playback. It looks almost as if it's being switched between the economy and standard bulb modes. I have yet to determine whether it is the projector or my Media Centre PC causing this... Will update when I figure it out. -
Samsung P9 (ps50p91fdx) Owners Thread

Last week I finally got a replacement for my ps50p91fdx. I ended up having to write up a 3 A4 page complaint email addressed to the VOC manager to get a resolution. I had an issue where I logged the fault before the manufacturer's warranty expired but, over the period of six months when they were attempting to repair it the warranty expired. After the four repair attempts it was escalated to samsung VOC but they claimed it was not a manufacturer's warranty issue but extended warranty. I spoke with extended warranty people and they wanted to start the repair process all over again as they don't count repair attempts during the manufacturer's warranty period as part of their four attempts no lemon clause. So frustrating!! So two weeks after I sent the email Samsung called and told me I would be given a series 6 50" replacement, which has arrived. I asked if I could get an LED TV instead but they weren't going to have a bar of it. The samsung repairers kept the old TV. Took a good six months for the whole thing to resolve. -

So I never got a call from Samsung. The repair agent did finally say my TV was repaired though and I got it back on monday. As soon as we turned it on it was sparkling pixels. To top that it now has a really annoying buzz that gets louder the brighter the picture is, (the result being a constantly changing pitched buzz). Called Samsung support today, they said a tech would have to come around and have a look so they can send them a repair report.... WTF??? they should have three of these from them already!? I try to explain that they should have three reports for the three repair attempts they've made, and if samsung's repair agent isn't doing their job properly then I shouldn't have to hassle them. I get annoyed when they tell me I have to call the repair agent and get them to fax the repair report in with the reference number (they do this every single time I call). Guy put's me on hold and emails the resolution guys, tells me he'll call me back when he gets a response. Still doing this silly dance. edit: Out of interest the ACCC site has a good guideline for how to make a complaint. http://www.accc.gov.au/content/index.phtml...x=12&Go.y=5 -

The W1000 only has vertical keystone adjustment, to allow for differing height mounts. There is no horizontal adjustment at all, so you have to have it mounted centered to the screen. Pretty sure it's done digitally in the projector. I called Harvey Norman, and the guy said DLP's were **** and LCD's were the only way to go blah blah blah. Of course he was trying to push the epson which costs twice as much. Bing Lee, Dick Smith and JB HiFi all don't sell BenQ. I was forced to order mine online. I didn't think to try Office Works though. -

If the PJ is put in a location where it gets hot (like in a cupboard with poor airflow) then the fan will spin up and sound like a helicopter taking off. Otherwise it is quite reasonable. Probably quieter than my xbox 360. -

This is exactly why I bought a projector before they came to take my TV away. I knew I would struggle without a TV for even a week, it's been two and a half months now. I spent $1700 on a PJ and love it so much I actually don't know what to do with the TV if they end up giving me a replacement. A refund would be nice but, how do they calculate the refund? the amount I originally spent? -

I'm still waiting for a resolution. Repair agent claim the part for the third repair attempt will arrive tomorrow, whilst samsung are still awaiting the repair report before they will look at other options. Samsung called them up and are getting them to send in the report anyways, will see what that leads to. I made the original warranty call in March. -

I have to say, this projector is awesome... even with that bit of dust you can only notice its effect some of the time so, I don't know if I want to put up with not having the projector for a period of time just to have it fixed. It is an entry level projector but, most of the time the picture it's giving you is stunning. Every now and then it seems to display certain shades of colour (mostly blues) a bit funny (as if they are highlighted on the screen) but I mean it when I say it is only occasionally. Since I am new to the PJ scene I'm still not sure if this is due to the Projector or that I don't have a screen? (for me) Rainbows are visible. When I first got the W1000 I saw them all the time. After I stopped looking for them I found they don't bother me that much. They only show up in the specific situation of bright white areas contrasting against dark black areas. I still love putting Avatar Blu Ray on and watching the menu loop through, such an awesome picture! -

Not good... got some compressed air and gave it a squirt into every nook and cranny. Even took the lamp housing out and tried clearing it out from there. But to no avail. Here are some pics so you can see what it looks like. The ones where you can actually see the dust/fibre is where I have the picture completely out of focus. The last pic is the actual result of what the dust does to dark images (That circle of lighter area, mostly visible in space scenes). http://dump.sonuku.com/pic/Blob1.JPG http://dump.sonuku.com/pic/Blob2.JPG http://dump.sonuku.com/pic/Blob3.JPG http://dump.sonuku.com/pic/Blob4.JPG http://dump.sonuku.com/pic/Blob5.JPG -

oh noes!!! I got a dust blob on my w1000!! it makes a blotch of slightly brighter area on black images. I checked the lense, it's not on there, so must be inside somwhere. I noticed if I zoom back to maximum, then focus in to maximum (so that the picture is completely blurry) it brings the dust spec into focus and I can see what it looks like. Will need to get a can of compressed air to try to attack it. -

I see that is for just the lamp itself so you'll need to pull the old lamp out of it's housing. Just be careful not to touch it with your bare fingers, something to do with the oils on your skin cooking on the hot glass making them blow. -

Why/how did you get VOC involved? Isn't VOC only for when you file a complaint? It may just be a matter of calling them up and speaking to someone different until you get someone who has a clue. -

Spec-wise the ps50p91fdx is equivalent to the series 5 (series 5 having a better picture), but price-wise what we paid for at the time is more equivalent to a 7 series. Someone here got an 8 series for a replacement, but the 8 series is a bit older now. I think the latest 7 series are the top notch ones. Anyone actually know how the samsung series works? -

Yeah fair enough. I just noticed a page or two back someone got the 8 series 850. That would make a nice upgrade, I wonder if there's any room to upgrade to a larger size if we offer to pay the difference... -

Sounds like we are in the exact same boat mate. The sparkles did happen straight away on the menu screen before a picture came up on mine too. I'm just wondering which model they will give us as a replacement... Probably the series 5. TBH I'd rather a refund for what I paid (bout $2600). http://www.samsung.com/au/consumer/tv-audi...b=specification -

This is still under the Samsung 2 yr warranty (expires in less than a month), so TV is just under 2 years old. Turns out they worked on the TV over the weekend replacing the main board. So they took it back on friday, and returned it to me on monday. Was watching TV all last night, and guess what... the pixels started to sparkle again. Note, the sparkling is not as severe as it was before, but it is still there and still annoyingly noticeable. I think the sparkling gets worse over time. So called Samsung, advised of two repair attempts, they advise they can give me "other options" after the TV has been attempted to be repaired three times. So I'm doing the dance again with the local repairer, they're picking it up tomorrow. I will post another youtube video tonight of the sparkles after the repair. Note: I tested on the xbox 360 over HDMI and on my blu-ray over HDMI (using a different cable for each) and they both sparkle. I even tested a different power cable to just to be thorough, still sparkles. -

I got my W1000 three weeks ago from Megabuy.com.au for $1700 delivered. I was really impressed with the quick delivery and service from megabuy. I just have the projector throwing the image straight onto the wall (painted in Antique White USA colour). I have been very impressed with the image quality from BD movies. Avatar looks absolutely awesome. This is my very first projector and I've noticed calibration is a lot more important on these things compared to flat panel TVs. My room does have some light leakage with the blinds down during the day so need to bump the brightness up for daytime viewing. I've noticed a few sort of anomalies with bright contrasting colours from non HD sources, where the coloured section looks almost like it's floating above everything else. There's also a sort of fuzzing around brighter images (shots of clouds against a blue sky do it a bit) when the movie is playing it fuzzes. If you pause it also pauses the fuzzing so not sure what's going on there. I assume there's some colour calibration I need to do here. It's quite minimal and not enough to put me off. I'm playing BDs from a Samsung P-1500, firmware updated to 1.3 Playing games on the xbox 360 is rad! With a fully light controlled room I'd be more than happy to replace my TV permanently with this. -

After three weeks I got my TV returned today. As soon as it was turned on the pixels were sparkling like crazy as they do. Mine had the panel replaced. Since the guy was there he took the TV back with him. Guess I'll need to wait another three weeks to get my non-repaired TV back. -

Have updated the video with music. Old one won't work anymore. So my TV was taken away on the 30/04/10 and I still have not heard from them. When they picked it up the guy said they would replace the panel but, I am still doubtful they will get it fixed. -

I have fallen victim to the sparkling pixels. TV runs out of warranty in two months, so I've logged a warranty call with Samsung and have Maxtech (in Canberra) coming to pick it up for repairs. They said they don't do any repair work on-site, even though the Samsung policy says otherwise. I fully anticipate not having the TV for a long time, so have ordered a projector, might end up replacing the TV altogether. I've made a video of it so people can see: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AjsmlDf4PAE
