Thanks Macca and Hakka,
I've set my large speakers (which are large) to "small" in the Blu Ray Player and this has helped a fair bit. I've also given the sub a boost in the receiver, but am wary that this will unbalance other sources that go through the amp. Hours of experimentation so far and more ahead.

You need to apply a 10db boost (speakers set to large) or 15db boost (set to small) for the sub when using the analog multichannel input, there should be an option in the menu of the AVR.
Hakka.
Thanks Hakka,
I'm already applying a 12db boost to the sub (by reducing everything else by 12db, the maximum allowed) in the Sony Blu-Ray player to get the results I've described in my original post. I'm not at home at present (so I'll check tonight), but from memory I think the sub is already on max boost in the receiver as well. The speakers are set to Large.
Any other thoughts welcome - is the cable a possible issue or is that a red herring? Is this sort of issue common for this sort of setup?
Cheers

Long time reader, but first time topic starter - be gentle with me...
Any advice/comments on the following would be greatfully received.
I've just bought a Sony Blu-Ray Player BDP-S760 (top of the Sony line). One of the selling points was the 7.1 multi channel analogue out, because I have an older AV receiver (Yamaha RXV440) that doesn't have HDMI, but has 5.1 analogue in.
So I have connected the Sony analogue 7.1 out to the Yamaha 5.1 analogue in. The 5 channels sound Ok, but the problem is getting the subwoofer (Velodyne VX-10) to fire for all sources when played on the Sony. The sub has a signal "threshold" which it needs to reach before it automatically turns on. After some fiddling this seems to fire OK for Blu-Ray discs (the small number I have!), seems to work for some DVDs and not for others (but only when the volume is up to almost the pain level) and refuses to fire at all for CDs.
The sub and receiver have worked fine together for a few years for DVD/Cd with a DVD player hooked up to the receiver via digital optical or coax. Similarly, the receiver tuner manages to fire the sub satisfactorily as well. So the issue is the analogue ins/outs and how this gets through to the sub
The receiver has its "bass out" seting set to "both", meaning that "both" LFE and other low frequency signals are directed to the sub.
To connect the Sony sub analogue out to the receiver sub analogue in I've experimented with one part of a component video cable (admittedly a long one - at least 3 metres, haven't measured it) and a 1.5 or 2m video cable (one of the single cables with yellow at each end). The receiver to sub cable is the same "sub" cable I've been using successfully for the last few years. I've assumed the cables aren't crucial for these purposes - I was going to get it up and running roughly and then assess whether I need something more expensive - is this where my problem is? Or does it lie elsewhere? Help...

I'm trying to decide between the Panasonic 50G10 and the Sammy 50B650 plasmas as well.
The Sammy has some nice extra features and supposedly can do 1080p over Component, which means I can still use my Yamaha RXV-459 receiver. (doesn't have hdmi)
Myer in Morley WA gave me these prices today with very little haggling.
50G10 $1900 + $349 for 4 yrs extra warranty.
50B650 $2000 + $349 for 4 yrs extra warranty.
Anymore comments/opinions on these two models and these prices?
I was actually also considering the Sony KDL46Z5500 but I'm a little worried about screen uniformity in that some clouding (back light bleeding) might be evident while watching a dark scene in a movie with the lights turned off at night.
50G10 price seems competitive - not sure about the warranty. I would be interested in knowing the sales person's name - I could be interested in a deal myself -are you able to let us know the name?

Well done.
Has anyone in Perth got somewhere near this price?
Rick Hart have this online for $2199

Our package of cables was left on the front doorstep. I thought that was a little odd, but I was so pleased to get the cables I didn't worry about it at the time.
