Pioneer Kuro 508xda Price Thread
Eazy replied to morricio's topic in Televisions, Projectors & Screens
Ahh yeah. I thought it was still worth replying to as I do think it worth re-iterating to potential buyers that the FTA tuner is a bit of a letdown BUT most folks here don't mind or sought alternative arrangement through use of an STB. I know that when I was going over my options, I wanted honest feedback on the display - warts and all. Enthusiastic owners (I count myself as one) can tend to gloss over some of the negatives. Research before spending your hard earned should lessen chances of potential headaches and buyers remorse. I'm chuffed with my tv. Not only does it put out a pleasing picture it looks good in my lounge room. I reckon aesthetically, it's close to perfect. Congrats on the purchase. What does your wife think? @Entreat - 3K is still a great price. -
Technology moves on and displays will only continue to get better. Seeing as you are in no hurry then the answers to the query will become irrelevant to you (but may still serve a purpose for those on the cusp of buying). But if you were to buy NOW - then I would opt for the 508xda. Bang for buck - it is amazing. I am an owner of one so I am biased but when I was in buying mode, I went back and forth over a number of popular HD/AV forums and a weekly pillgrimage to to HN/JBhifi/CDwow to compare the various makes and models. I thought the XBR Bravia's and Samsungs LCDs were nice (Sammy plasma was adequate and Panny 1080p = yuk)- but they were always pipped by the Pio 508. Knowing the spec in terms of resolution does not match the LCD's I was concerned that I was missing out on something. I let my eyes decide for me - and the Pio won out. LCD's have come along way in the last 2 years but I would wait at least till one more generation before buying one. I'm looking at buying a display for my room (32" - 40") so it will probably be LCD.

Pioneer Kuro 508xda Price Thread

It is the one flaw in this display. I don't watch much TV bought it mostly for HiDef content but when I do watch FTA, it is annoying. But I forget all that when watching a movie and recently, playing Guitar Hero 3 on the PS3. Awesome. I bought mine for 4K (hard bargaining) some time ago and I haven't had a moment of buyers remorse, even seeing it at the amazing price it is being sold for now. I popped in to JB's the other day, and the XDA still stands out against the competition. I expect when the new models from the various big manus are released, it might look a bit more ordinary but for a 720p panel, it's more than held its own against the other makes/models out there. At the price they are going for now, you can't really complain. It's cheap and high quality. -
Bless you. My other pet 'favourite' is ' pulled the trigger and bought <insert consumer item>. I have dark thoughts when I see Australians appropriating shitty American terms. Yes. Pull the trigger. ditto to Australian using 'Mom' rather than Mum. I hope the release schedule for Universal HD titles on BR is brisque.

Awesome price. The U.S model PDP-5080HD is apparently being phased out. Perhaps this explains the price drop in Australia... Apart from competition from other plasma manus of course. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=989591 -
Pioneer Kuro - 720p Or 1080p Model ?
Eazy replied to t10001503559603's topic in Televisions, Projectors & Screens
Some people think we are buying the one plasma for life. In 2-3 years, I'll upgrade to the latest and greatest. Within 6 months of purchasing whatever model is released it will be superceded by an evolutionary product of that technology. While I could have bought an LX, for me there is the issue of heat. The LX is a beautiful display but living in Darwin, I don't need to introduce additional heat output into my living space. I shouldn't have to convince anyone just how wonderful the XDA is in the PQ department. Apart from the evolutionary goal of higher PQ, I hope the 2009/10 HD panels are much lower in power consumption. Reduced heat, lower TCO. Win. -
At that price you may be able to score a 50" Kuro - or at least 4K.

You know I thought the visuals were awesome the first time I watched it on a crummy rental VHS vid and old school tv. Imagine how amazing it's going to look on the big screen - remastered....

Pioneer 508xda Kuro - Break In Period
Eazy replied to t10001503559603's topic in Televisions, Projectors & Screens
Break in period for me is to turn it on - and watch movies and some tv. I'm not concerned with burn in or ageing phosphors. I'd be disapointed with the panel if it can't deal with the modest use I am putting it through. -
What's the word on Akira? I'd love to see this title released in HiDef. Preferably Blu - as I don't want to have to buy a Tosh to play it.
-
How much for the Fujitsu? There's a thread floating around about Klapp's uneven after service....
-
I'd love to see the face of the head honcho at Matsushita after reading that comment. Gold. Unless his retort was... "I have had a Somalian transvestite - I received good service" ...so what's Epson build quality - customer service like?
-
Quite a few titles are 'all region'. E.g - [Aus Version] Spiderman Trilogy. I have a Japanese PS3. http://bluray.liesinc.net/index.php?region=b http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?showtopic=50447 The BR selection is still lacking - but it will get better. Post amended ala Napalm68.
-
I prefer the site I posted. Much easier to quickly scan through the titles. I'm pretty sure I found the website on the thread you just posted. Amazon order arrived today 6 days past 'expected' arrival. Packaging was unique. It came in a straw bag - and it looked like the box took a beating. Fortunately, there was no damage to movies. I've ordered some titles from DVDPacific - see how I go with them.
-
Is is an import PS3? If so, do what I did. Check this site for region free BR movies available in Australia - then head to JB's. http://bluray.liesinc.net/index.php?region=b I bought the Spiderman Trilogy for $70. Not much choice at the local JB's but wanted to check out BR movies on my new Region A PS3.
-
I'll be picking up Batman Begins on BR. I just did a quick search and one link lead to another and a whole bunch of titles that I really like are on HD-DVD. There are more HD-DVD titles that I want than BR. If it weren't for the Warner announcement I wouldn't have taken the dip into the HiDef sea. I was leaning towards HD-DVD but waited to see the outcome of CES. The outcome is I bought a PS3 from yesasia. Anyway. moving along.

Pioneer Kuro - 720p Or 1080p Model ?
Eazy replied to t10001503559603's topic in Televisions, Projectors & Screens
Morricio paid $3850 for his - he's pm'd receipt to at least one member on the forum (InterestedUser). I paid 4k for mine. I was told by manager that I was buying below cost by $50. I believe t1000. I understand these prices are achieved through rebates through Pioneer. Obviously t1000's price is at this stage very much the exception. -

See t1000 for the best price thus far on the 508. $3780 Thread: http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?showtopic=61354 IIRC that beats pricing the 507 range before the Kuros replaced them.... -
Pioneer Kuro - 720p Or 1080p Model ?
Eazy replied to t10001503559603's topic in Televisions, Projectors & Screens
How much did the 506's go for? 6K? I've had my eye on owning a Plasma for years and until recently I've never given LCD's a second look. I still wouldn't purchase an LCD as my main tv. I've had my eye on Pio's since the 436, as I reckon Pioneer are head and shoulders above the competition. Yes, it's a subjective thing. I did look at the 1080p Panny but it disapointed. The Sammy 1080p looks ok, especially for the price and I confess the current model bravias and Aquos range also look ok but for me, it's the Pio. My eyes love it. I hesitated for a bit when I saw CES Pio panels but I could not abide the 48cm green tinged images of the CRT any longer. I don't think the Pio 508 looks on paper to be a good proposition for the average person looking at upgrading their tv. It's by comparison to the competition expensive and there is a real push for 'Full HD' by sales (one HN dude said it wasn't worth hooking up BR to the 508xda as it not 'full HD'. ) - so the specs of the Pio in terms of resolution don't 'match' up against much cheaper 1080p LCD/Plasma panels. -
I live in Darwin - no professional Pioneer installers. I was lucky to get JB's to deliver it on the day I paid for it. No waiting for me! A mate gave me a hand with physically moving the panel - I set it up; a very straightfoward process. It would be crazy to move the panel by yourself as there is good chance something will happen to the Pio or yourself (blow your back) as they are quite unwieldy. Kid gloves all the way. Gentle is the word.

What Blu Ray Player To Import?
Eazy replied to Noodle99's topic in Movies - Box Office, Blu-ray Releases etc.
What about just walking into a Bestbuy or whatever electronics store and purchasing one? He should be able to bargain down from rrp. -
A smidge under $600aud. It arrived today. Yay. I raced to DHL to pick it up as they are not open on the weekend and I was keen to test the PS3. Unfortunately, my Amazon order hasn't arrived - but I will query the post office tomorrow. I can report that it works fine though. Set up is very easy. If you've ever had to connect a console before then you can safely ignore the Japanese only instructions. No issues with power but you will need to source an IEC cable (same type as the one that connects to PC power supply). Good thing I had a spare laying around. You won't be disapointed with the white PS3. It's sweet looking. Ah and if you haven't ordered from them before, they may require you to fax/email a copy of your credit card/bank statement. If so, do what I did and scan the relevant portions - and create a pdf (you can use cutepdf) then email them. Quick and no mucking around with faxing.
