  1. I was in a similar position - tossing up between 32 LCD vs. 42 inch LCD/plasma. I was about to compromise and get a toshiba regza 37 inch, but then went for a 42 plasma (panasonic). I have been very happy with the decision. I have noticed that DVDs in the extra widescreen format (2.35:1) do not occupy the entire screen - with black bars taking up several inches at the top & botom. The image is still a good size on my 42, but I think that on a 32" such movies would end up looking quite small - thus defeating the purpose of upgrading/upsizing to a flat panel. A similar problem would occur with 4:3 shows on free to air. Good luck with your decision PauliD
  2. Hey DukeM, I was in a similar position to yours - i was ready to part with up to $4000 for the right TV. Eventually went for a panasonic 42" PX7a plasma for $2050 (inc delivery + 3 year warranty) from Clive Peeters. Reading this forum (especially Owen et al) dissuaded me from my initial desire to get a full HD LCD, for several reasons. Firstly, there seems a general consensus that full HD resolution offers minimal appreciable difference in picture quality at practical viewing distances (virtually no advantage when watching SD sources, and perhaps even more noticable artefacts). Secondly, I myself would only be using a TV for free-to-air and DVDs (will not but blu-ray / HDDVD players or videos until prices fall from present rip-off levels). Thirdly, many users report annoyances and problems with their full HD LCDs (Sony Bravia X - backlight bleeds; Samsung M8 - having to manually turn off moviePlus mode after every channel change). Fourthly, free-to-air TV looked very ordinary (ie, noticable artifacts) on the full HD LCDs I viewed in shops, although to give the benefit of the doubt this may be secondary to poor setup (also to give appropriate credit - bluray on full HD screens did look impressive from close range). Don't get me wrong - I'm not trying to knock LCD. In fact, we also bought a sony 40" bravia V300 for my girlfriend's parents at the same time ($2000 inc delivery and 5 year warranty from Clive Peeters). Would have gone for the sony ourselves if it had a built in tuner. Overall, I'm very happy with the Pana 42 PX7a. Only problem is some sound breakup during some channel 10 HD advertisments (see relevant thread on this forum), but no problems during actual shows. DVDs look fantastic - just watched "The Prestige" - very dark scenes show up well, and that's only using a composite cable. FTA also looks great. Built in sound has decent base does not rattle at high volumes (of course, sounds better via my stereo). I suppose the only theoretical disadvantage of the 42" pana plasma is a 1024 x 768 resolution compared with 1366 x 768 of most LCDs (or 50" PX70a plasma) - although I'm not convinced this is noticable in practice. The sony LCD also looks great, although we have not really put it to the test. My advice based on my first venture into flat panel Tvs would be: 1. If your keen to score a TV soon, going with a 42" pana plasma (7a or 70a) would be a solid choice. 2. If you think 1366 x 768 would be better than 1024 x 768, then go for an LCD (or plasma with 1366 x 768 - such as pana 50" PX 70a). 3. Don't spend extra on full HD 1080p panel unless you'll regularly watch full HD sources and watch them from close range. If your determined to get a full HD screen, I would strongly advise waiting for newer models that (hopefully) have weeded out problems in existing generation. 4. If using your TV to display your PC, an LCD is probably better. 5. If you can wait for several months, the new range of sony LCDs will have better features (ie, built in tuner, better image processing, 100 Hz motion technology, colours & contrast & connections etc) with prices only slightly higher than current models. 6. LOOK AT SCREENS IN SHOPS - this is what converted me from my previous LCD faith to a plasma owner. Hope this helps, Cheers, PauliD
  3. Picked up a 42" 7a 2 weeks ago. Tonight I noticed some audio "crackling" during the credits of Medium on channel 10 HD . When the credits were briefly interrupted by a promo voice-over, the sound is perfect. No problems noted during 10 HD shows, other FTA channels or DVDs - in fact the picture and audio is otherwise fantastic.
