  1. He He... Can you please clear mine while you're at it ? My wife has a duplicate card and she is not afraid to use it! Wonderful as she is, she's the only person I know who can turn a Sale into a Disaster!
  2. The price is great now its dropped from $6900 RRP! That was overpriced. But remember it is their top hi-end panel with the best of all their technology in it as far as I know. Pixel plus 3 and Clear LCD for SD sources, and 3ms its the class leader in the all important response time. As for 1080HD Vs 720HD, the Sony 40" is still a relatively small screen which IMO wont benefit greatly from the extra pixels. I cant understand the 37" 1080s either, except for gaming or very close viewing. When you watch a widescreen movie on a 40" in letterbox format, you dont have much screen real estate left and what do you really see? 720p is an exceptional HD image, especially at 3-4m normal viewing distance. That extra 2" is a big help and the ambilight full surround really gives you an impression of a much bigger screen imo. when you get used to it and helps with the perception of colours and contrast. Thats hard to see in a lot of bright stores, because the border is really coloured not white. SD viewing on a 1080 panel is quite an upscale. Personally I found them a bit grainy and soft on movement also. Most of them are 8ms and I find it evident on skin tones and faces loose a lot of detail when they move. But if you sit very close and mainly watch a lot of HD, maybe thats a better choice for you personally. They are best on true HD if the blur doesnt bother you. Its a difficult decision but in my opinion 1080 is best at 50" plus, and even then you have the rescaling issue enlarged. Again fine for HD... And Foxtel? Forget it on a 1080 panel IMO! So it isn't necessarily the number of pixels but the processing that's important. The Sony is a different beast from the Philips. If you turn all the processing 'features' OFF on the Sony's you can get a reasonable SD picture. On the Philips, everything needs turn ON and stay on, for HD and SD Maybe digital natural motion off, depending on your preferences. The Philips has the media player and ext hard drive via USB capability too coming and hopefully the ethernet port. And 3ms response rate, for ultra sharp action, SD or HD. Good luck with your decision, its a difficult choice! PS Dont forget to compare the Sound capabilities if thats important to you. The Philips has a great sound stage if you dont want the Hi Fi on all the time. Take a music or action DVD with you and check it out.
  3. Absolutely!!! I would not even consider anything less for me or anyone else. Its a major retailer so dont be concerned, I have actually seen their stock when they checked it was physically there Thursday night. They're at the rear of the store, (with about 100 other panels!) on carpet, not in some sight unseen warehouse. Also the cartons are in factory sealed, pristine condition, I think I could take a photo for you if that would help when I drop the deposit/s in. There is also one on display and I will be happy to take a photo of its serial number so you can be sure they wont ship that one... there is no need to as they need a display model anyway. I'm glad you asked actually and I will be pleased to help. The guys are really good there and they are putting together a quote for me on a PJ and PVR so they wont do the wrong thing by me! Actually they said they appreciate my business!!! I suppose this should have been my vocation in life, purchasing Hi Fi and LCDs...! One other thing, these are very well packed. The panel weighs 38Kg but the total is 62Kg. If you see any sign of carton damage you dont have to accept it. Freight is insured, and your credit card has fraud protection, so you have to get what you pay for. Just about all these TVs are courier delivered because of the size. If you could get one in your own wagon or van, you wouldnt want to be involved in an accident because the car insurance would likely not cover a $5000 TV! Cheers
  4. How many of us here know about this! This panel might have a fairly rare function that for some unknown reason is not being marketed properly. A built-in Media Player! OK I knew it had a memory card reader, USB port, I assumed for a camera etc. But no, its much more than that. GG Guide stated: "When we review televisions we check every last port to make sure it works properly and as advertised. With the 42PF9831, we were fascinated by the fact that it has a media player built into the firmware of the television. You can connect a USB stick, external USB hard drive or one of a handful of supported memory card formats to the television and play music, videos and images directly from your media. The quality is of a high standard and the file supports are surprisingly extensive. The television can play back Mp3, .alb slideshow files, JPEG, Divx 3.11, Divx 5, Xvid and MPEG 1, 2 and 4. This is a very rare feature and one that we haven't seen before. We were taken aback at how easy it was to use and how well it worked. The possibilities are endless with this feature. Imagine having a 500GB external hard drive attached to the television and networked with your home PC? This is certainly an impressive feature that makes this LCDTV stand out from its competitors." This is from Good Gear Guide Unfortunately to confuse things, they also incorrectly connected a PC at 1280 x 768, above the recommended resolution of 1024 x768. So they panned the image cropping 'problem'. Then they say in stark contrast how good it all is and "The possibilities are endless with this feature. Imagine having a 500GB external hard drive attached to the television and networked with your home PC?" The rest is a 100% glowing review. I dont have a HTPC as yet but I have tested with an iMac @ 1920 x 1080 via HDMI/DVI cable and I can assure you there is no cropping of image, but its not quite 1:1 as there is some minor overscan. Fine for 42" IMHO. Funny how not all video cards work at higher resolutions via HDMI on a range of LCD panels, and VGA is always quoted as the PC connection to be safe I believe. Whilst I'm yet to try it, but I think the external hard drive functionality is a winner. Group Buy Update - Free delivery Sydney, $100 to Melbourne. Sydney price is now $4500 is delivered. 5. Its looking very positive, we have 2 interested and it looks like we can do it again, but just waiting for Management approval. 2 units ex stock even! Will have some freight cost to Melb soon, I hope, but manager is away for a few days so it may be a couple of days at worst. Hang loose! If anyone interested PM me for other details and we can finalise the order late this week if its all go. Will also help me haggle a good price for my PVR except I still havent decided which one! Cheers
  6. The 42PF9831 LCD’s are an awesome 1366x768 panel let me tell you. It's the only 3 ms response LCD available and completely free of motion blur unlike all other LCD I have looked at to date. It is an excellent panel for SD & HD TV viewing and particularly DVD’s. ‘Clear LCD’ processing software is designed for SD & DVD’s and many people think they look like HD on this panel. But don’t upscale them on your DVD output, let the panel do it for best results. All in MHO and I am biased! If you are looking for best price a ‘group buy’ like we did 6 weeks ago got it down to $4500. RRP is still $6900 but generally ticketed at $5500 or there abouts last time i looked. The previous group buy was to be a ‘one off’, but if you or anyone else is interested, send me a PM and I’ll see if I can help. It a major Sydney retailer, prefer not to disclose as it is well below normal minimum acceptable margin. COD or Credit Card was fine too. I did have someone in Perth interested a few weeks ago now but not sure if they are still in the market and we need 3+ unless anything has changed. Otherwise haggle hard!
  7. GB42, can you perhaps edit your topic description? Seems strange Lcddont ??? Here are some links: Philips Product Selector here for quick links to specs, manuals etc with pics. 9641 Brochure (504kb) here Interesting... The US and UK specs do read full HD, yet I asked Philips about full HD a month ago and they said they did not have anything planned yet, except the 42PF9641 panel being 1366 x 768 LCD and it's the only large LCD to be released Dec/prior to Christmas, so Tech dept told me. Anyway I'd be comparing the picture performance with the 9831 with pixel plus 3 HD being 3Ms Vs 8Ms to see how it stacks up, as I rate processing performance far more important than 1080 vs 720 in a 42" panel OMHO, but that depends on your preferences, FTA, SD vs future HD source material and of course viewing distances. Perhaps the Oz model will not be the 9641/10D? I think you need to ring Philips and get the full code for Oz. From the brochure pdf: 42PF9641D/10 Product highlights widescreen flat TV with Pixel Plus 2 HD and Ambilight 2 channel 42" LCD integrated digital LCD Full HD display 1920x1080p This display has a resolution that is referred to as Full HD. Dynamic contrast enhancer You want the LCD flat display with the highest contrast and most vibrant images even at wide viewing angle. The Philips dynamic contrast enhancer uses video processing and unique dimming backlight technology. This delivers deep rich black levels with increased detail. The dimming backlight increases the contrast up to 5 times*, and at the same time improves the viewing angle. It gives a bright, lifelike picture with high contrast and vibrant colors, (* factor between 2 and 5, screen type and picture content dependant). Ambilight 2 channel Ambilight makes an impressive contribution to the overall viewing experience by producing ambient light to complement the colors and light intensity of the onscreen image. It adds a new dimension to the viewing experience, completely immersing you into the content you are watching. It creates ambiance, stimulates more relaxed viewing, and improves perceived picture detail, contrast and color. Ambilight automatically and independently adapts its colors according to the changing content on the screen. Bypacked tabletop stand A table-top stand with matching design is packed with the set
  8. Er... Dritz, this is a rear pro thread you know! And how do RP sets perform off axis? Not too well!!! This has gone OT but briefly I assume your Philips comments refer to my beloved 42PF9831 & I must disagree re the blacks, unless you were standing looking down on the display? At correct viewing (read eye-level) in a dark room the Philips has a very good black level IMO when set correctly. I cant see any normal seating arangement giving any problem. As for "massive" yes it is certainly bigger due to the (fantastic) surround ambilight & that really becomes and extension of the display so the experience is like no other 42" panel, more like a 45-50 IMO which it obviously isn't. I think a 60" or 70" R-pro is really what you should refer to as massive! SD it shines on a 480/576 feed and let the set do the scaling not the STB/DVD player - then I have seen blows the 40/46X away in SD colour clarity and blur, based on direct comparison. All IMHO of course. That said Im considering the 60" SXRD for my lounge room and I look forward to seeing it. SD performance is my concern, and I hope the judder & blur I have seen (at Sony) on the X is gone based on the 2.5ms response. Also would anyone comment on why the tiny SXRD panel has an excellent response time of 2.5Ms compared to the X's 8Ms fullsize LCD? Is LCOS so completely different to LCD in that regard or is the the size of the actual panel? And will this translate into better upscaling 480/576 SD performance than the Bravia X also? Thanks.
  9. I dont have these warranty brochures now but a few months ago I noticed the Bing Lee and Dick Smith warranties were similar terms and conditions, some paragraphs were almost identical wording. They had different flyers or cards, their own brand name, different 1800 phone numbers, but then I noticed the FAX NUMBERS were identical! So obviously the same insurer for both chains.
  10. Great program! Surprisingly small 26KB and a just a few seconds to download, simple to run and escape to close each colour. No dead pixels on 3 year old laptop and great to help clean the err... dirty screen! Thanks guys.
  11. Pioneer 506 - Group Buy. With the model change upon us, would anyone be interested in a group buy on the current Pioneer 506 at $5000 delivered? I recently organised an LCD group buy for a Philips 42PF9831 and this will be easy for me to arrange for anyone interested. Different retailer but they rang me today as I looked into this about a month or so ago before I decided to go with LCD. Can still do - they are keen for my business! Then the price would have been $5150 then, so they havn't moved much but that seems like a good price to me at $5000. But If by chance numbers could reach approx 10 units, the price would fall to $4850! But that would depend on when we close it and panels they are prepared to give away at that price! There is a slight chance of wall bracket installation - to be confirmed. Not sure how many units will be available if stock is getting thin, who knows. If you have a STB or PVR and dont need a tuner, this could be a good deal including Pioneer installation and the standard 5 year warranty. To keep things safe $200 deposit with order and balance Creditcard, or by bank cheque on delivery. Please post your interest here. No knockers please! Cheers.

  13. I'm not sure why good balanced SD performance is such an unreasonable requirement in a $5K panel, if thats what you mean. I provided the most detailed review I could of my 46X review, including settings at Sony Chatswood and the responses from Winston. Heck, I was trying to buy it! Whilst the HD looked awesome, SD left me disapointed despite efforts to resolve it. Just try a DVD freeze frame and look at it compared to HD or still picture. Really, we all have to evaluate the pros and cons of new technology (Full HD) and decide what is a fair compromise in our own opinion. I think its also fair to suggest alternatives worthy of inspection if thats the results of our labours in search of the right panel. Otherwise what is the point of commenting and posting at all? It's certainly what I want to hear when I'm researching a product. Then I make up my own mind. PS. Re Why demo display SD and Foxtel? I couldnt agree with you more!
  14. Philips technical dept told me about this global resource site they refer to for new product releases, operation manuals and software upgrades that are available for some models (like the 42PF9831 LCD). Also its very useful to check out specific models and likely designs before they arrive, if you know what code number we are likely to get. Philips Product Locator link Hover cursor over the codes to bring up small pics. Search function is also there for specific model if not current, or not in the list.
  15. Maximum picture size will be best. Let the panel take care of things from there and scale to its resolution. I havent tried it on a Pana but I dont think you will have a problem down-scaling. Choose a widescreen or 16:9 resolution in your camera's Pic Size options if you wish to avoid the black bars. Not all brands of digicams would have this, but the Pana Lumix range certainly does to my knowledge. FWIW I have seen a poor result from a Hitachi 8900 but my findings were flamed, despite my thorough comparison. Yet a Sony HD player worked perfectly on the Hitachi, so I put the difference down to poor card reader performance, to my peril! But it was nite and day in my test so 'Input variation' is something to check out. Anyone with a 500A care to comment on SD card performance? The 600A should be at least as good. I think the best Test would be to compare a CD input with SD card input, using the same image on both media.
  16. Sorry, but is there really a better SD+HD performer in 40"+ LCD? Im sure they will arrive some time...
  17. Unfortunately I have to disagree with this statement. If they are capable of "beautiful SD" please tell Winston at the Sony Centre Chatswood, as he recently could not demonstrate any reasonable SD PQ, despite 45min of testing via their best HDMI player. In the end stated these panels were "not designed for SD, rather 1080HD and blu ray". Quality upscaling technology in (most) LCD panels is straining at 720 let alone 1080p IMHO. My choice was the Philips 42PF9831 for this very reason and I would be happy to attend a Sony/Philips SD shoot-out in any Sydney store, I believe it is that good! (Or very soon in my lounge room, if you bring a Sony X with you! ) Hope another opinion helps 1019sea. Not sure of your 40 month I.Free Price though Street price is about ~$5000 and then start haggling. Good luck.
  18. Have a look at BruZZi's Plasma FAQ here A wealth of Pana info, hope you find what you need.
  19. Slightly OT - Great choice, Panasonic Lumix are great cameras with their Leica lenses and Pana's electronics. The FZ10/20/30 are almost but not quite DSLRs but definately more fun to use (size and weight wise) with a fantastic f2.8 zoom with image stabilisation. I mainly use it at ISO 50 and -2/3 EV I get great outdoor images with low noise. One lense and 35-420mm! Also has a widescreen mode which is great on your 50 flat screen without any black bars!
  20. Weekly HD TV Thread My thanks to anthonysimilion This is a great thread by being updated weekly with the latest programes 720-1080. Someone else can do the % !... out of 168 hours x 4 chanels = 672 hours. And now where are chanel 7's 576p programes... and SBS? It is also a question of your viewing habbits. 21. I would recommend doing a ring around first. In Sydney some HN, Domain, GG and Bing Lee have them, but only the bigger stores. I also suggest you ask for the salesmans name, and ask him/her would it be possible to see it on a) STB and b ) DVD with HDMI connection & preferably not a Philips DVD! as they are less than good. (Sammy 850/860 is exc @ $179) Tell them your in the market for one today or tomorrow and they will treat you a lot better when you get there. Maybe take in a DVD of your own to check out certain chapters in a couple of different stores. Make sure you check out the remote and have a play with the picture menu. Turn everything on except Digital motion on the 9831. Play with the DVD settings too, check out 1080 and 720 outputs for the best PQ. FYI the 9831 thread is here. Has some good pics & links. RRP in June was $6,899! Good luck.
  22. CNet Review here I'm not sure full 1080i HD is really necessary in 37" but the PQ obviously must be good! The other HD panel 37PF9531 i think was not good on movement being 8Ms from what I saw in passing in stores. Just check out its SD performance and make sure its as good as the the Philips 42PF9831. There is a lot of processing required to display low res inputs and 1080 displays seem to suffer in this area. Good luck.
  23. Welcome! Had a look at Philips? Not easy to find I have found. After closely comparing the Sammy and Sony (and Pioneer/Pana/Hitachi plasmas) I personally have gone for the Philips 42PF9831 LCD because its superior PQ and 42" size. Also it is razor sharp at 3Ms, 7000:1 contrast, ClearLCD has excellent SD/DVD performance, and has the full surround ambilight which I have found adds dramatically to the perception of colour and contrast, even size IMO. 3 year warranty is also standard unlike the Sony which is something to consider. Assuming you dont really need a tuner (HD PVR is essential IMO) The Philips is about $1000 or so more, but difference chicken feed over a 10 year period for such an improved viewing experience. My 20 cents plus GST. ps Also noticed they have just won the 2006/7 EISA award for best LCD so the Europeans can take it up to the Korens, Japs and Chinese!
  24. Now she has some serious competition!!!
  25. Welcome to the treadmill! You simply decide WHEN you (sort of) really would like to have your new panel delivered, and plan what shape your budget is likely to be in. See if you can stretch a bit. Waiting a bit can also help the budget s t r e t c h, then say you decide 'by end November' then make sure you check what you might be coming out just after that... Damn again!!! To get off the treadmill, set yourself an Ordering Deadline! I recommend then plan a shoot-out in store of your 2 or 3 favorites panels and make a final decision. Then go shopping for your best final price and give the store who have you the best service the chance to beat it!
