I wouldn't have foxtel without foxtel IQ ... plain and simple really .... I don't have time to watch much and I'm not home often... IQ makes sure I can watch what I want, when I want....

I found it useful, upgraded from the SD version.
Having said that, be aware that the HD version has no real instructions on the disc (the SD version has a voiceover telling you how to use the various test patterns).
There is a mighty big instruction book downloadable from their website though.
I have both, and having seen both - I reckon one version would probably be good enough for 99% of what most people would want it for....

THis is a big issue for me Muzzer. Have you confirmed that if you take the receiver out of the equation that the judder goes away?
This suggests that the receiver, even with a so-called 'pass through' option, is doing something to the video stream on its way through.
is the OSD disabled? apparently the passthrough only works if the OSD is also disabled

I don't know why Mario is so worry about the video processing of all these receivers. I know he has DVDO VP50 and he can
just let VP50 doing all the video processing and let the AVRs working on the sound. I think he should just go with a 805.
the thing for me is if I want to either sell the onkyo or keep it for another room, the Reon could be a plus... and I would like to test the onkyo noise reduction in conjuction with the VP50 to see how they work together... before I even contemplate moving to a VP50 Pro purely for its noise reduction ability .....
sonically, with my current setup, I'm pretty happy with the yamaha 2500 ... its just part of the upgrade cycle.... coming to 3 years... time to upgrade...
cheers,
Marcelo

Then go with the 905 as there is no capability to control the video processing on the 875, it has been crippled in this respect.
yes, I'm leaning towards the 905, but it depends on price in the end.... I'm 90% sure it'll be the 905 ....
in terms of processing, I'll let the DVDO do most of the processing for me... but I think the Reon would be a 'nice to have' feature for the amp...
I never used the yamaha for video, only for audio ... and I'll probably keep the set up the same way ....
I do prefer the looks of the yamaha versus the onkyo, no doubt.... but the more I read, the more I like the Onkyo...
I haven't been to a place where I can evaluate them side by side.... I've seen the 3800 and the 875... not the 905 .... very hard to compare sound quality if not side by side and with the same acoustic environment and speakers ....

top machine... love mine... good luck on the sale beejay ....
Cheers,
marcelo

I've got both machines.... I like them both.. however I find the BW easier to use, more reliable and far more versatyle... if I had to choose only one, would definitely be the BW....
-
I love my yamaha 2500 and up until now didn't see a need to upgrade.... but I'm going with the Onkyo 875 or 905 depending on price.... I was really lookin forward to the yamaha 3800 .... but it really disapointed me on the video side of things.... for that matter I'm going with Onkyo

Thanks to the forum mods for pinning this thread as a "Sticky".
If anyone has anything to add, then please post it here, and I'll be happy to add/modify the original post as appropriate.

just got mine today ... looking forward to playing it ...

does the onkyo 875/805 allow 24p passththrough fine
still debating whether toget the 805 or Yamaha 1800
I'm a Yamaha fan.... but this new generation of onkyos are far better then the new Yamaha's..... I'm planning to upgrade my yamaha 2500 to an onkyo ...875 or 905... depending on budget approval....

jscreen fix was good for some guys inthe US, but you need to run it for quite a while.... alternative if it was a logo, try to set the screen on 'invert' with the logo on... it should improve with some time...

Yes we have been really enjoying the show upto now, lovig the PQ and SQ too. no probs here with lip synch last night guys
well, the PQ still as stellar as before, and today the sound is great, very well balanced, no 'stadium echo' and no lipsynch problems... it looks like it was a definite transmission problem for me I think ....

i saw this on another forum "
"Preorder Halo 3 cheap
1) Get this: https://dstore.com.au/promo/paypalfathersday07 $15 0ff voucher if you use paypal for orders over $75
2) Dstore has $1 delivery until midday 24/8/07 (now it's $6)
3) Preorder Halo 3 at dstore.com.au ($81.95) , apply coupon and pay by paypal

If it was 'horribly' out of sync, you might have had the HD audio with the SD video.
it was definitely HD PQ.... SD would never look that good... but will double check... it was as if it was slightly out of synch 1/2 sec from time to time.. pretty weird as I never had it before.... maybe time for a reboot????
-
is anyone else also getting a little lipsynch from the transmission? no other 5.1 FTA HD show gives me lipsynch issues.... so I guess, it must be a 10 issue, at least in SYdney....
but the PQ is amazing..... the SQ was much better on Sunday night.... Tuesday it wasn't that great..... it could have been the contestants.... who knows....
-
does the marantz decode HD audio formats? It didn't look like from the website details ....
-
So how did you go Big?
I'll give it a go tomorrow - I drop the unit off at the local hi-fi place I bought it from on Saturday, and didn't have a chance to pick it up yet.... busy day today... tomorrow morning I'll stop and pick it up and do a firmware refresh... will post it here if its working ok again..... Fingers Crossed!!

I would like to see what video attributes the new Denon pre/pro has before deciding on the future of my VP50. Maybe that $1000 USD upgrade price would be better spent on the pre/pro upgrade. Then I will get the new HD sound format decoding, HDMI 1.3 and hopefully some handy video processing as well.
that's a very good point beejay .... and the way everything is going... soon enough you will have all/most soures 1080i/p with a 1080p panel..... the need for external VP in most situations will be greatly reduced..... smart move for them that ABT is focusing on chips.... but bad for us existing VP onwers....
-
Yes, if same applies as per the VP30>50 upgrade, you'll get a local warranty. For that, DVDO pay Synergy a nominal fee per unit. In any event, I'm going to sit this upgrade out and wait for the next offering.
the only thing I really wanted was noise reduction for some sd sources (namely foxtel and the odd old DVD...) - too much money just for this... so I'm going to upgrade my amp, to a new Onkyo 905, which has the HQV chip and some settings for noise & block removal (ie: low, med, high) .... at least I'll get a new amp out of the upgrade, with similar or less difference in money then if I upgraded my VP50 .....
my current VP50 will be the last piece of equipment I buy from DVDO .... really not happy about their ongoing support..... I doubt also that after this one, I'd ever buy another dedicated external scaler....the new amps are doing such a great job and with HD sources, the need is really reduced for top external scalers.....

I thought they were only shipping PC games, not platform games like PS3 or Xbox 360 ....

From www.toppytools.com
E02 - Corrupted firmware in flash memory.
A simple reflash of any FW should fix things.

Peter Gillespie
thanks peter ... i have purchased toppy tools... I should have used it.... I just wasn't sure of what to do! I'll check if the toppy rep has picked up the masterpiece by Tuesday or not.... I may be able to pick it up and try the fw update.....
many thanks, I'll try that.....

Bitey Bags Bargain of the Year IMO
mate, you should feel sorry for bitey ..... when I was preparing the toppy to post it this morning, and making it more simple to use with less taps, etc.. (since it was for his father in law) - the toppy stopped working... it started giving me an error (e - 02).. no idea what happened.... tried to work it out for 2 hours... it worked sometimes and sometimes it didn't... it never happened before.... murphy's law .... so I had to call Mr. Bitey, apologise profusely, refund the money via paypal + paypal fee (so he is not out of pocket), take the toppy to my local retailer to get fixed.... at least it happened before I posted it...
I'm extremely sorry for the inconvenience I cause Mr. Bitey ... and everyone who didn't get in should count themselves lucky on this one.... let's see how topfield australia gets back to me... is still under warranty .... so...
again, sorry Mr. Bitey ...
Cheers,
Marcelo

Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure what you mean by switching gear? Also I've read posts on this forum that it doesn't matter if you have the PS3 set to Bitstream or PCM as you will still get the Lossless track when you select it throught the menu on the disc. If your referring to my sound drop out when playing the Heavenly sword demo, I have tried both settinga and still get the audio drop out during the cut scenes namley the music and sound effects the dialogue is still there. Never had a problem with the Arcam AV8 hooked up with optical.
reading the AV forums in the US, there are issues with the PS3 and the 805, 875 & 905 ........ HDMI is still not 100% reliable at times, and the fault may or may not lie entirely with Onkyo ....
wheat I meant by swtiching was the order in which the equipment is turned on ... for example in my case, I need to turn my scaler before I turn on all other equipment, otherwise sometimes I get synch issues with HDMI .....

I think it more then stands a chance.... HD DVD is finaly getting through all the hype and vapourware that BluRay promoted with its immense marketing budget ....
I'm very happy with HD DVD ....
