  1. Works:

Samsung LA32A450 TV (Surprised by this one as the TV is 3 years old)

    LG 32LE3300 TV

Topfield TF7050HDRt PVR (This was advertised on its website as MPEG4 compatible)

Also my Windows 7 Media Centre PC works fine too. Not sure if Media Centre uses its own codec or relies on the one supplied with the tuner drivers, so if anyone finds that their Windows 7 Media Centre does not work let me know and I will find out the model and driver version of my tuners.

  2. How reliable/stable is it?

I have a Topfield box that will lock-up if you use the fast forward / skip functions to often causing it to loose the currently recording program and may fail to record if left in stand-by. If the Teac is reliable at timer recording and doesn't lock-up constantly then it's far superior to my current PVR.

  3. Just because its on facebook it must be genuine, please you's arent that stupid.Channel 7 has a web site theres no need for them to have a facebook site.

The guy that runs the TVtonight web site checked with seven and confirmed the face book page is not official.

He mentioned it in response to a comment, but I can't remember which article it was under.

  4. So 7 have two HD channels now....

Think of it like this: On an analogue TV you can tune a station into any preset position you like. For example, most people would put seven in position 7. My autotune function used to put it in position 2, because it is the second station it found after ABC. But there is nothing stopping you from putting it in another preset position, or even in multiple preset positions if you like.

With digital, the LCN can be thought of as the preset position, the only difference to the user is that the station gets to control the preset number instead of you. So seven just put their single HD channel into two different preset positions.

  5. I have not yet heard why ABC1 cannot be broadcast in HD and the ABC News24 in SD...

That comes down to legislation. The original plan was to make buying a HD receiver optional to keep costs of going digital low, because of a short sighted belief that HD would always remain a niche product. So now we are stuck with legislation requiring the "main" channel be simultaneously broadcast in Analogue and SD digital.

I think it will be different once analogue is switched off, after all when everyone has digital, how do you define what makes a channel the "main" channel? Even then however, they may be cautious about putting popular content exclusivley on a HD channel, at least until the ratio of SD receivers becomes small.

  6. That's why I do not understand why anyone would buy an SD STB. Buy a HD box, even if you only have an SD TV. That way you are covered.

You are right of course, but not everyone is as well informed as members of this forum. And with people buying STB's through supermarkets or stores like BigW/Kmart, there often isn't a knowledgeable individual to offer them the correct advice. And then there is the automatic distrust many people have of advice from sales people that would have them spending more money. I used to work in retail and can tell you from experience that some people will just stop listening as soon as you suggest they spend more.

  7. Why should it be? ONE HD is their HD product.

There is nothing stopping them from making 1 SD and 11HD if they choose to do so. It's just at this stage they obviously feel that One would serve them better in HD then 11.

On a slightly different point though, when One was launched they told people that they could watch it on SD receivers on channel 11. I'm pretty sure they didn't mention in the ads for One that OneSD would only be temporary. I wonder how many people bought SD receivers to watch One and will get a rude shock when OneSD finishes. (Less of a big deal if they bought a $40 STB, but what if they bought a $300 PVR? Also, lets not forget that if they bought an SD box, it's probably because they are on a low income and didn't want/couldn't afford to spend $100 on STB.)

  8. I think it's a silly name but will be alright as long as all HD-produced content on 7 is simulcast (Sunrise, News, Lifestyle, Dramas, Documentaries and Movies).

We may lose regular 7 programming in HD but at least Seven appear to be doing it so that large events like sport are still shown in HD and the other 73 programming is a mixture of genres so that it caters a wide range of tastes. I hope Nine follow the same path in the future. I am a little dissapointed though by the number of SD shows (eg Family guy, American Dad Scrubs, That 70's Show etc) they plan on showing on 73. Would be better if they put those shows on 72 so they can make 73 all HD programming.

Also, looking forward to Caprica and Warehouse 13 in HD (All the shows I enjoy have been on SD channels lately).

  9. ...these is no PAL / NTSC switch on the unit...

...Didnt notice much or if any sound issues...

I wonder if they have updated the hardware for the Australian market? How does the sound compare to this youtube video? If they have fixed the sound issues then I do want one.

As soon as I saw that video, I became concerned that people would avoid it due to the sound issues, then if they ever release one with decent sound, Kmart would not bother to stock it based on the poor sales of this one. I have seen it before with the Atari flashback, the original was not a real 2600 and not popular. The Atari Flashback 2 has a real 2600 inside (though they didnt include the cartridge slot even though the solder points exist on the board!?!) but no one stocks them because the first one sold so poorly.

  10. I'm confident that Topfield are actively addressing the issues that have come up and they will have resolutions in new firmware.

I'm not - The latest firmware for mine is from 2008 and a number of people have been complaining about it on the topfield forums for while, so I have given up hope of ever getting an update.

  11. Your needs and price range seem ideally suited to a Topfield 7160.

I personally would not recommend a Topfield. My friend and I both have topfield PVR's (different models) and we both have problems with the machine failing to record occasionally. Mine did it tonight infact, failing to record the simpsons and that 70's show. The fact it is happening on two completely different models confirms to me that problems are common with this brand.

    - biggest mistake I ever made IMO was buying a Topfield -

  12. It's done!

Fantastic job. The guy showed me all the readouts too, my pre-BER (i think thats what it was) has improved by a LOT, gone from 7ish per 10^3 to 7ish per 10^8. iirc.

He also made a point of telling me he had managed to get all the channels to within +/-5db of one another, bar Bris31 & the 3d trial channel which are -10ish db from the rest (i think they were all in the range of 63-67db).

Most of my digital channels worked quite well previously with 2 & 10 being the ones with more pops & corruptions than any other and sometimes getting so bad it was unwatchable. The first thing I noticed (appart from the 3d channel working perfectly, where before it was a frame avery few minutes) was the improved speed at which my HTPC is able to change channels, it has literaly halved (or better) the time to change from one channel to another.

    Very happy indeed!

Mind if I ask what you paid and what was done?

  13. If it was a one-for-one program swap, analogue to digital, and there was a much more robust modulation scheme used, then digital would really shine.

Yeah, I was thinking that QPSK DVB-T would be a great choice in less developed countries, or in regional areas where the population is spread over a significant area. A single transmitter could cover a very large area, without the loss in picture quality on the outer reception area that analog transmissions suffer.

  14. The transmission mode is QPSK which essentially means in comparison to SBS (64QAM) for example the signal will be far more robust and have better immunity to all forms of interference despite being lower power than SBS.

I was aware that QPSK modulation was more robust, but I am blown away at just how robust. As I have stated in another thread, my signal strength is 10% but quality is 100%!

  15. But it's not dedicated to "low rated content", it's dedicated to sports.

It rates as low as 0.6% overall viewing figures some nights, that makes it low rated content.

I did no such thing. What I did was point out the difference between average ratings and peak ratings (a situation that applies to every channel, not just One), but you chose not to respond to that.

I did repond to that, by pointing out I have already stated I have no issue with the higer rated native HD content on the HD channel. If it is SD content though, why not put some real HD content on the HD channel? It's not like you can't watch the SD sport on the One SD channel - I am aware some areas don't show the SD channel, but you can't tell they wouldn't change that if the SD channel had different content.

As I said, 9 goes on about Go winning in primetime - why target in on primetime unless the stuation is quite different outside primetime, which is what I would suspect anyway, with most of One's live sport on outside primetime)

All stations target prime time, because that is when they can charge the most for advertising. If most of One's live content is outside of prime time, then having some non-sport content in the prime time slot shouldn't interfere with most live sport content.

Anyway, I am over this, but I have one last question:-

If Nine and Seven announced today that their HD channel was going to be a genre specific channel, so that no more sport would ever be shown on 9 or 7 in HD, would you be OK with that?

  16. We're glad you're happy to have HD for your content at the expense of sport.

I'm glad you're happy to have HD for non native and very low rated sport that is also available on One SD at the expense of any other genre in HD. (I am obviously a very selfish person for suggesting the HD channel should cover a range of tastes so that it has something for everyone. )

  17. If you've seen any of the fuss that some people make, you'd know the F1 isn't in (full) HD, it's "upscaled SD rubbish". So, this is a high rating, non full-HD event which is shown live on One, but delayed on 10 (and the ratings show that more people watch it live on One than on delay on 10, despite being "upscaled SD rubbish" on One). So if you're happy for One to show the HD stuff, this doesn't fit into that category, yet shows the reason why One is a 24*7 sports channel (regardless of how much of it is actually HD or not).

My stance from the start has been that dedicating the HD channel to low rated content is makes no sense. I am happy to have One SD as a 24/7 sports channel. I am happy if they put the higher rated native HD sport content on One HD. That has not changed.

You tried to defend the choice to put content that rates poorly overall on One HD by pointing out the higher rated content such as the F1. If it is not real HD then why use it to defend the choice to put those shows on the HD channel? You have simply reinforced my point that they are wasting the HD channel.
