  1. Thanks for all the advice guys. I went with the Samsung 65" HU9000 in the end. Love OLED and firmly believe it had the best picture, but I couldn't go past the 65".
  2. Some really good advice and information. While LG have announced 4K OLED and you might expect it to arrive in stores shortly, I can't imagine pricing to be near reasonable, even at 55". Assuming I am buying now, my gut says to go with the LG 55" OLED at $2900 and use the calibration settings I came across elsewhere. Hopefully they still work with the latest firmware update? (http://pogomix.net/lg-55ec9300-oled-tv-calibration/) I'd most likely buy a larger 65"/75" 4K OLED in 12-24 months time assuming pricing began to come down and move the 55" OLED to the bedroom/spare room for the PS4. All that said, it's hard to pass by going with something larger now like the 65" UHD Samsung. The Mrs really liked the Samsung and couldn't tell the difference of course. She liked the size vs the LG. Heading to JB again today to take another look. If I can't make up my mind today I think I will just wait another 6 months and see what comes from the new OLED releases.
  3. Hi all, I set out to buy a new TV this past weekend but in the process have brought myself up to speed on the current situation more or less. OLED is in, it's good, but it's small. Anything above the 55" model available is $$$. 2015 will bring 4K + OLED and the smart money should wait. That about right? Haven't paid too much attention to the technology during the past 5 years so a lot of the latest info came as a bit of a shock to take in over the past few days. I've been more than satisfied with my Pioneer Kuro LX508 during the past 6/7 years however I think it's time for something bigger and 'better', even if only marginally. Whenever I've looked in JB and the like in recent years I've never been that impressed with LED LCD's compared with my Pioneer, something i've read from many others recently. As such, I've been reluctant to change for the sake of change or size alone. The Pioneer is/has been flawless though I'd like to find something with a few new features and size. From some breif reading I've shortlisted the following models if I were to move ahead now. I've also done a little haggling from store to store and listed the best prices i've negotiated. 55" LG 55EC9300 Curved OLED $2900 Samsung UA55HU9000W Curved UHD $2600 65" Samsung UA65HU8500W Flat UHD $3200 Samsung UA65HU9000W Curved UHD $3650 In store I love the look of the OLED when observing HD content and from what I've read will most likely come the closest to meeting my expectations I have had set with Plasma over the past few years. I've done a little reading into its reputation and potential drawbacks, but mostly there is a common voice stating that OLED has the best PQ. I haven't had a chance to see it playing FOXTEL or something standard which is of concern as that will be the majority of content most evenings at home. 65" OLED would be ideal, even if non-4K, though I haven't seen one in store. The 4k OLED 65" which i've read about is also ridiculously priced at about 10k. The decision for me is based on the best PQ over $ and for the meantime while UHD content is lacking, I would think going for contrast over resolution might be the better choice, i.e. the LG OLED. I'll likey keep the TV for 2-3 years before upgrading again so I'm not worried about being locked into something smaller or inferior. We sit quite close to the TV at home at approximately 3-3.5M for Foxtel/TV/Movie viewing and about 1.5m when I'm sitting on the coffee table playing PS4. I get that curved screens are gimmicky, but I'm neither for nor against them. As we sit pretty close, and dead on, I'm less concerned than if we sat far back and from wide angles. I'm getting the impression that buying 4K is more of a gimmick unless you have specific content available, and I might be better off with an OLED HD display at this point in time, should I not wait. As content and bandwidth allowances changes over the next few years, 4k becoming the standard makes more and more sense. Perhaps I'm wrong but it just seems to be this way from the few hours of reading I've done. I read this article which I found interesting, http://www.smh.com.au/digital-life/c...08-12knnd.html, and if I was still on NBN like I was last year (I moved unfortunately), it sounds like 4K streaming from Netflix might be worth going the Samsung 4K route now. However for the meantime, would you think that HD PQ via OLED wins out over 4K? Yesterday I spent quite a bit of time in front of the TV's in question. OLED or UHD, neither really make a strong case for replacing the Pioneer Kuro except for the 4k/LG USB content. I was really surprised to come home and read on here that some have sold their Pioneer 508/509's for over $500-$1000. It seems many on the forums are saying to hold onto those older Plasma's and it seems many in the know haven't bothered with LCD's or kept their spending on them to a minimum. I've never felt good about the look of LED LCD's but never realised just how bad some of them were/are until spending some real time with them yesterday. My Pioneer isn't dead, not by a long shot, so I don't have to jump immediately. However I think if I do buy now, it might just be to go large and get the 65" Series 9 Samsung. At the end of the day the majority of my viewing is Foxtel/HD rentals and a nice big screen upgraded from my 50" would be welcome. Obviously you can't go wrong with the 55" LG OLED either - it's a stunning unit and value under 3k - even if it is expensive for a 55" 'standard' HD. This video is really quite compelling for OLED, even at this early stage. 65" 4K OLED mid year will be amazing. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=G2viiPwA_FQ Something I have been trying to arrange is to see Foxtel on both the 55" Series 9 Samsung and 55" OLED LG side by side. What I don't yet understand is whether or not the UHD Samsung up scaling HD content would provide a better or worse image on Foxtel than the OLED displaying Foxtel which would not be up scaling at all? 4. Would be interesting to know what these (well my panel) is even worth.
  5. I've been considering something larger and had a good look over the weekend but nothing impressed me. LED LCD are horrid IMO and the plasmas were few and far between. Love a bigger size but my LX is easily keeping up all this time later.
  6. Thanks for responding. I'm just curious really. Unless someone was interested, it'd probably go to my sister or something.
  7. Hi all, Long time since I've been to this forum Am wondering what my main Plasma maybe worth as I am now looking into something larger. It's a PIONEER KURO 50" Plasma PDP-LX508A which has served me very well without any issues. Unit is mint, complete and with original box etc. It's too big for the bedroom and I have a new Sony LED LCD there. Just curious about a ballpark value as I know these were very good, if not the best out there when they came out. In fact, I still think it looks better than many units I see today in stores. Though I expect things have come a long way. Thanks Jay
  8. Pulled the AVR out, disconnected the optical cable. Then I moved the RCA's from the TV input to DVD input and plugged the optical cable back in and it worked! err wtf... It's working now so thanks all the same. I have no idea how/why.
  9. Hey guys... please help me here before I lose my mind! So the Mrs is cleaning the house today and she picks up the remotes and moves them. As she does this, the sound cuts out but she thinks nothing of it. Assuming she's just hit the mute button. Here's the setup; PS3 w/ PlayTV connected via HDMI into LX508. LX508 connected to 1906 via rca cables using the TV input. Had it setup this way for years basically without a problem at all. I've not yet tried taking out the PlayTV and just having the signal come straight into the TV as I dont think its to do with the PS3. As the TV is essentially just acting like a display, and I cant find any settings to adjust the sound that would affect the 1906, I dont think the problem is here either. So I feel the problem lies with the AVR - and i've played with every possible setting, hit every button and I cannot get sound. Now when I run a test tone (on the AVR remote) I get sound. However the PS3 menu, PlayTV etc has no sound at all. I have no speakers on the TV (have always used the AVR for sound). I assume if I connect the speakers (get them out of the box etc), I will most likely have sound. I guess I want to know if there is a way to master reset the AVR at all? Anyone have any idea's? Cheers, Jay
  10. VW execs are the only ones driving the R for the time being. Official release is speculated as the 12th June.
  11. This arguement has been done to death. I sit about 2.5-3max (depending which seat on lounge) from my LX508 and im telling you, I CAN see a massive difference. Also, I just went from a Pio 436 watching BluRay to my LX508 and its obvious to me on BR. Now I may not see it at 100% as im over the 2m magic mark but I certainly tell the difference. The only BluRay movie I have which i've noticed fills the screen s night at the museum, I did feel it didnt quite look as good as my other BD movies - still incredible and 100x nicer than DVD (which I also own)
  12. Exactly my experience. I understand the guy is busy, and he travels interstate but ffs.. 20-30 min in the evening answering a few emails and coordinating your calender wouldnt hurt.
  13. You choose one or the other. If you decide you want the other at a later time, buy it seperatley. Both are NOT included.
  14. In your situation, with a budget of $6k.. wait till later this year and grab the 60 for close to that I imagine.
  15. I would accept a new panel but at a partial refund. Say 25% from PIONEER.. not the retailer. However in the end, this is what warranty's are for.
  16. So if Aaron emails you the settings, can you not just pass them on to everyone? Or when calibrating, specific equiptment is used and you cannot simply change the settings to achieve the same result? (I have no idea about calibrating).
  17. Ok so I jumped up and down and its being delievered tommorow between 10am and 12. Taking the day off
  18. Who are you guys using in Sydney for Calibration if not Aaron/Avical?
  19. Ok so I spoke with Pioneer again - they got onto Nova who called me. Pioneer lied to me. I was told that the Plasma came into the country last week and it would be sent from Pioneer's Melbourne warehouse and forwarded to Sydney Novacomm installers who would call me to arrange delivery. I did not recieve a call from them at all Friday, Monday or yesterday. I had to follow this up myself. Fair enough I understand lack of stock etc but Nova tell me that they do not have the Plasma, it is coming from QLD (due to it being table top) and she wont be able to do the install till Wednesday next week. I told them to sort it out whichever way they can, but I want it in my home before Friday long weekend or I wont be taking delivery and they would be seriously dissapointing a 2 time Pioneer Plasma customer. (435/436) She will call me tommorow and advise if they can meet my deadline.
  20. Serious?.. jeebus.. if I could've got an LX608 for less than $8k i'd have jumped on it. doh
  21. Ok - so I purchased my LX508 early last week. Still havent recieved a call from Pioneer / Installers. Called HN, got the details for Pioneer who said LX had only just come in on Thursday last week. Will be shipped from warehouse in Melbourne to Novacomm in Sydney. Ok - still waiting on call from Novacomm so I dont know when its going to be installed at this point. Very bloody annoyed.
  22. When I bought my LX508 I was told the price of the 60" would be about the $9500 mark.
