  1. That's illegal in Australia. A retailer canot make you go through the manufacturer. MSY was recently fined something like $300,000 for doing that.
  2. In Britain, the fridge, washing machine and drier are all considered part of the house and remain when the house is sold. The dishwasher is not and you take it with you. This is for historical reasons. All of these appliances are usually in the kitchen, which is tiny. Everything has been built around the exact size of the applicances. Even in the 80s, the typical fridge there would be called a bar fridge here. Dishwashers originally were free standing and rolled ito the kitchen when used.
  3. With the consumer protection laws that started in January this year, is it worth getting extended warranty any more? As I understand it, the new law bascially says that a product (and its parts) should last a reasonable time for the type of product and its price range. So a good TV should be covered for at least 3 years, probably longer.
  4. I have a Samsung UA55C8000 and can play MPG videos from my Windows 7 PC without the need to install any software.
  5. Finally found the culprit. The Onkyo receiver has a thing called RHID which allows different model devcies to talk to each other e.g. turning the volume up using the Samsung TV remote control actually turns the Onkyo receiver's volume up. You have to turn on RHID to get ARC (Audio Return Channel) to work. I had turned this on about a week or two after I got the TV and receiver. Yesterday I was reading some things about RHID causing problems. Last night, I turned off RHID and got back to almost perfect Lip Sync. I then adjusted the A/V delay in the Onkyo receiver to 100msec (thanks to Ownen for the figure), and I cannot see any lip sync. I have not had a chance to see how this affects Foxtel or Bluray yet. Hope the 100msec works for them too. I can live without ARC.
  6. As expected, the lip sync problem came back when I set up my receiver. I did a lot of experimenting with settings on the TV. If I have both the TV's volume on and the receiver's volume on I can hear the delay as an echo. I found that I could almost eliminate the problem by turning Game Mode on. The echo disappeared. Unfortunately, there is a slight degradation in picture quality. The manual says that is to be expected. It also sets the picture mode to Standard when we find Natural looks better. At least I have a mechanism to reduce the problem when it is bad. Now, I need to tackle what I can do in the receiver, other than set a delay. As the problem varies from source to source and proghram to program, a fixed delay is not practical. And I am 90% sure that the problem did not exist when I first set up the receiver and TV. I must have changed something in the receiver that made it happen.
  7. I have not noticed any lip sync that I can recall on HD channels. The most common Foxtel channel that has the problem is Sky News. Some more background info. My house was flooded and I have been living in a serviced apartment for 2 months until this week. This apartment had a standard (i.e. not IQ) Foxtel box. I took my BeyonWiz and the big TV with me to the apartment. I never saw one instance of lip sync problems there. The problems I described were happening before I moved into the apartment. I now have got the TV all set up at home (now with an IQ2). The receiver is not yet set up. Again, I am not seeing any lip sync issues. I expect that when I connnect up the receiver this weekend, I will start getting lip sync issues again. Changing the audio delay on a program by program basis is not really an option as it is buried deep down in the menus, and vidoe/audio turn off while in the menu (though once you get there, there is an option to turn on the video/audio).
  8. I have had some lip sync issues with my home theatre set up. I have everything connected to my receiver (Onkyo NR-808) via HDMI then from there to my TV (Samsung UA55C8000) via HDMI. When watching Foxtel or BeyonWiz PVR, I can get Lip Sync issues on some programs but not others. My Onkyo supports HDMI LipSync but I can't see anything that says that the Samsung supports HDMI LipSync. Turning on HDMI LipSync on my Onkyo does not seem to make any difference. Does anyone know if the Samsung supports HDMI LipSync.
  9. Plus state and local taxes which can be as high as 11.5%.
  10. I paid exactly $200 at Harvey Norman for a 5900 - and that was without haggling.
  11. As I said some programs have the issue and others don't. So adjusting in the receiver isn't going to help (and I have tried, and 100Ms is what I came up with for the times the problem occurred). I watch some HD on the IQ, so I can't drop that to 576i. I'm not sure it is even possible. As far as I know the Wiz does not do pass through, so I have to slect a particular resolution. I can try 576i there. I can't remmeber what I can do with the Onkyo. I think I can turn off upscaling. I was under the impression the Onkyo had a very good upscaler.
  12. I recently got a UA55C8000 and it's great. It replaced an older Samsung 32" - and there were no lip synching problems with it. I find that some program have a significant lip synch delay. This happens on both Foxtel IQ 2 and my BeyonWiz PVR. I don't think it happens on Bluray and I have not checked out the in-built tuner. For example, SkyNews has a significant delay but most other Foxtel is OK. All devcies are connected via HDMI to my Onkyo TX-NR808 receiver. There is a single HDMI cable from the receiver to my TV via HDMI 2. ARC is enabled. The video signal is being modified in my BeyonWiz (taking it to 1080i), and in my receiver (taking it to 1080p). The receiver has auto lip synch detect which I turned off last night. It also has manually adjust delays, but that did not help. Logic says the problem is in the TV as the previous TV did not have this problem.
  13. The web site for claiming is closed, so there may not be any discretion available.
  14. I paid $1400 for an 808 at Harvey Norman. I could have got the 708 for about $1000.
  15. If you are looking for benchmark TVs, then in the Samsung range - 55" 8000 - can be had for $3200 - 55" 9000 - can be had for $5900 I have had the 8000 for 1 week now and am very impressed. Peter
  16. There are only 3 types of HDMI cable: - standard speed - high speed - high speed with Ethernet For 3D you just need High Speed.

  18. I could have got the 9000 for $5950, but I stuck to the 8000.
  19. Shelf price for 8000 at HN Chadstone is $3448. Same at Nunawading is $3684. I got mine at Nunawading for $3500. I had no choice but to buy there as it was an insurance replacement and Nunawading is where insurance is handled.
  20. I find it incredible that people think that an HDMI cable can be improved and improved. It is digital. Once the signal is getting through without errors or jittering, there is absolutely nothing that can be done to improve it. It gets through perfectly with a simple $30 cable. Longer lengths and very hostile environments do need a better cable.
  21. Does anyone now how good the Samsung C9950 7.1 Home theatre is? I am replacing my TV and sound system, and I am very tempted to get the Series 9 Samsung LED LCD (UA55C9000) which comes withthe C9950 for free (valeud at $2399 RRP). I can get the TV for around $6500.
  22. That comment is from a user review, not a professional. - the 808 does have 2 HDMI outputs - there is no such thing as an HDMI 1.4a cable (only options across all cables are standard or high speed, or ethernet supported) - better HDMI cable does not improve picture quality (unless comparing with a really crap cable, or it's longer than 10 metres) - I can't see how putting receiver between bluray player and TV will affect 3D - it's already 1080p so there should be no scaling. Must be as setting he made.
  23. JB only stocks up to the 608. Are they getting it in for you? Do you know what the difference is betwen directly connecting iPOD/iPhone to 808 compared to getting the separate dock?
