  1. Further information: This is a great little unit that I bought after reading some measurements on. It has 2 functions, one to act as a buffer that uses Jfets to provide a high input impedance and low output impedance and to provide a very accurate attenuation of source. The other function is where you switch off the Jfet section and use the relay volume pot to provide attenuation. In that function it is as benign a passive buffer / attenuator as you could hope to get. And it has remote control, multiple inputs and dual outputs so it's covered in terms of convenience. I r
  2. I partly blame Giardia of the Galaxy for the resurgence in interest. Yes, that was a deliberate typo. Compact cassettes were fantastic in their time. Given the technology we had, they were a convenient and relatively reliable way to make music transportable. Nearer the end of their reign, very high quality metal tapes could be had at reasonable prices and Dolby technology evolved to deal with the issues of hiss. On the topic of pencils and cassette tapes, I still remember one tape that wound itself pretty much out of the case and then broke when it caught on the internals of th
  3. REL refers to the thing on the back of their subwoofer as a Crossover. https://rel.net/blog/2018-08-23/reconsider/the-art-of-tuning/
  4. Well there are plenty of choices in between $2.95 and $100 Audioquest. I've had great success with these -https://www.ebay.com/itm/8PCS-High-Quality-Pure-Red-Copper-Screw-Locking-Speaker-Cable-Spade-Connector/202269956393?hash=item2f183a9929:g:~t8AAOSwhEVbJGcd And they are real copper. No soldering required, unless you want to of course.

  6. Yeah, I get it. The REL has a low pass and just about every set of speakers with a passive bass section effectively have a high pass filter as result of the natural roll off of the low end.
  7. Ha ha! You fool! You fell victim to one of the classic blunders! The most famous is never get involved in a land war in Asia, but only slightly less well-known is this: Never get involved in typing war with Davewantsmoore.
  8. There are some great 2nd hand RCA buys on here. Actually Bills Cables makes some really well priced new cables.
  9. Current design but only 96khz https://hifimediy.com/product/hifime-ur23-spdif-optical-to-usb-converter/ If I am reading the spec's right this can convert from optical to USB at 192khz https://hifimediy.com/product/hifime-uh1-384khz-usb-dac-headphone-amplifier-and-i2sdsd-interface/
  10. Older units https://www.thewelltemperedcomputer.com/HW/SPDIF-USB.htm Might be able to grab one 2nd hand.
  11. Not sure what point you are trying to make. Rod Elliot says "Larger electrolytics can be used if desired" and ATLHIFI has used 2X 47,000uf. So?

  13. Further information: Just to explain what this is. PS Audio had their LAN Rover USB "extender" which essentially packetised the USB input and sent it via ethernet to an output at the other end. The benefit (apart from being able to send USB over really distances) what there there was galvanic isolation between the source and your DAC. It was widely known at the time that the LAN Rover was out that PS Audio in fact used rebranded version of the Icron USB / Ethernet extender. This unit has some improvements over the LAN Rover and the older Icron unit because it uses Fibr
  14. Sure can. Just like when people on a placebo during DBT drug trails show improvements in their condition. Just one example - https://www.health.harvard.edu/mental-health/the-power-of-the-placebo-effect Another https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/6763943/
  15. The step down transformer is non-isolating so it would seem that the reduction in noise was related to the reduction in voltage? Is 12-14V DC a common thing in the AC supply? That sounds alarming. I would have thought DC in the mains should be in the millivolts range. I believe the ATLHIFI units are designed in accordance with Elliots recommendations - https://sound-au.com/articles/xfmr-dc.htm
  16. https://www.atlhifi.com/product-category/fully-assembled-devices/?currency=USD Got this unit. In my case, I ordered the hardwired option that has 2 glands, one for input and the other for output. I wanted to use my own power cable and mains plugs. So it's a Male mains plug - power cable - DC blocker - power cable - IEC connector. To be frank, I was hoping for a more profound reduction in noise in my power amp's transformer but it only reduced it slightly. I eventually got a 240V - 220V stepdown transformer that reduced the power amp's noisy toroidal down to almost inaudible le

  18. Further information: The illustrious SOTM200. A bespoke mini computer that does one thing and one thing really well - stream hi-res audio via ethernet and output in via USB. Roon compliant (I had to update the firmware recently as the new Roon 1.8 update seemed to make Roon think that the SOTM200 wasn't compatible any more ). Also has it's own bespoke operating system - connect it to your network and the device appears in your web browser so you can access the settings. Its deceptively simple. A massive step up from a Laptop or PC based music output. The SOTM200 has a
  19. Further information: Up for grabs X4 1.2m Ethernet cables. These are used to run connections between patch panels in Datacentres. Theses U/UTP cables have 10GX certification which ensures a very high resistance to EMI/ RFI and Alien Crosstalk. A good short length for small spaces too. https://catalog.belden.com/index.cfm?event=pd&p=PF_10GXFUTPCMRPATCHCORDS Photos:
  20. Further information: I bought these off a fellow Steroenetter a few months ago. I am a late comer to Audience but I have to say I am very impressed. I started with the Ohno RCA's which are a superb "budget" high end cable. The Audience SE cable extends the capabilities of the Ohno to include the same richness of timbre but no with extended frequency extension and increased dynamics and detail. The Audience cables are very simple and unassuming looking but they are ones that give you insight into the music. Price is firm. If no one is interested at this price, I'll proba
  21. Further information: Audience OHNO RCA cable 1m in excellent condition. I bought 3 sets of these but don't need all of them now. IMHO these cables are crazy value for money (in the scheme of high end cables) even at full price and especially at this price. They offer a lovely sound. Bass extension and control is at odds with their appearance and rich timbre with a hint of warmth. All the necessary information is there to suck you into the music These cables are not out of place in a high end system (used them successfully in a system with Preamp / DAC and power am
