  1. Hey guys, turning down the gain helped. I now have the gain at half setting and only turn volume just over half way up for at maximum listening level. I'll test again with quarter gain later tonight. I guess my point is that the M-Stage appears to be a great amp, but the AVR (in this case) does just as good a job as the M-Stage. Further listening may prove otherwise, but so far I can't really say one is sufficiently better than the other. Just to confirm how I'm now listening to both setups... It's not exactly apples with apples. Originally I'd run the HPA off the AVR (using DAC in AVR). Yamaha Blu-ray - HDMI - Yamaha RX-V3071 AVR - AKG Q701 Headphones Panasonic Blu-ray - RCA stereo - M-Stage HPA - AKG Q701 Headphones Something else - the setups are in different rooms. Pretty sure that in itself would have a mental play on things. Good to see everybody's feedback and thoughts. Cheers
  2. Thanks guys, I'll post further findings shortly for anybody who's interested. I'll try the gain set to half/less than it is. No gain at all was too quiet - volume was turned up to the max and still not loud enough for a Friday night listening.
  3. Hey guys, so I thought I'd leave some feedback on my findings of driving the AKG Q701's through Yamaha RX-V3071 and a dedicated headphone amp, Matrix M-Stage HPA-1 (no onboard DAC). The Matrix M-Stage, as most people will agree can definitely drive AKG Q701 headphones. I connected the M-Stage directly to a blu-ray player (also yamaha) and then for fun connected the HPA to my AVR (see if there was any sound difference with the DAC in the AVR to my blu-ray). I was using AV out. (I tried all the pre-outs and had no luck). Not sure if this is the best configuration, but it worked. Had to turn the AVR volume down and then use volume control on the HPA. The on-board headphone stage in the AVR (Yamaha RX-V3071), in my opinion is just as good/better than the M-Stage. The problem when using the HPA is noise interference (slight hiss when volume testing the m-stage at full volume at full gain +20db. I doubt you'd listen to anything this loud). This could be cables, or perhaps the moon being too close to the earth. Who knows? At the end of the day, the AVR is just as good as the M-Stage for driving the Q701's. You just have to turn up the volume on the AVR louder than you normally would when listening through your conventional speakers/easier to drive headphones than when you are using Q701's. Either way I'm very happy I can put this question to bed and now I have a great little amp I can use elsewhere in the house. I have since setup the amp in the bedroom, connected directly to a blu-ray player. I'm sure I could have a better setup, but for me and for the time being it's good enough. Cheers for the welcome to Stereonet
  4. Also, apologies for this topic being in the wrong folder. Not sure if myself or any admins can move to Head-Fi/appropriate location?
  5. Thanks guys, and thanks to the forum I now have a Matrix M-Stage HPA1 Headphone amp (see positive feedback I left for the seller). The Matrix M-Stage, as most people will agree can certainly drive AKG Q701 headphones. I connected the M-Stage directly to a bluray player and then for fun connected to my AVR (see if there was any sound difference with the DAC in the AVR to my bluray). The on-board headphone stage in the AVR (Yamaha RX-V3071), in my opinion is just as good/better than the M-Stage. The problem being noise interference (slight hiss when volume testing the m-stage at full volume at full gain +20db. I doubt you'd listen to anything this loud). This could be cables, or perhaps the moon being too close to the earth. Who knows? At the end of the day, AVR is just as good as the M-Stage for driving the Q701's. Either way I'm very happy I can put this question to bed and now I have a great little amp I can use elsewhere in the house. Cheers for the welcome to Stereonet
  6. Hi Everybody, new forum member. Looking for a headphone Amp to drive AKG Q701 headphones. Did see somebody was selling a Matrix M-Stage on here. Anybody else have anything similar? Thanks very much.
  7. Yeah, I read that in a link somewhere too - and it's not cheap either. So, you know how people have made those rooms out of foam shapes to absorb almost all the sound... Would it almost be the same with this stuff? Would you eventually go mad if there was no reflection off anything else in the room from the screen? Guess you and everything else in the room would have to be covered in the stuff for you to feel invisible! Weird??? http://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/earths-quietest-place-will-drive-you-crazy-in-45-minutes-180948160/
  8. Took me a while to figure out that it's the same piece of foil with the substance applied to it, which is why you can't see the creases and bumps of the foil. Maybe this is what every bat cave fan out there is looking for??? http://www.independent.co.uk/news/science/blackest-is-the-new-black-scientists-have-developed-a-material-so-dark-that-you-cant-see-it-9602504.html
  9. Figured it out. Is a bit fiddly - defo need small nose pliers and a flat bad screw driver to wind up the tension again. This is the video that helped me (it's a bit slow, but does explain what to do). Hope nobody else has this problem, but hey if you do - here's the fix. Cheers
  10. Anybody out there experienced a manual pull down screen that won't roll up? Somebody pulled it all the way down, now there is no tension/it won't catch/spring up. I've tried google/YouTube but can't see any tips. Cheers
  11. Wow, what's going on with this forum? For once we have a thread with various opinions and mutual respect. Nobody is having a dig at anybody and everybody is having a nice conversation. More tea??? Getting back on track, it does appear to be a bad time to buy for those who are wanting to buy a PJ and on a budget / not looking to replace anything over next few years. Having said that, how many people have thrown away their old HD tv's to upgrade to UHD tv? I think you'd be happy for at least a couple of years with your purchase so long as the PJ suits your environment - bat cave v lounge v gaming etc...
  12. I agree with the other forum members comments above and I can't see any great improvements being released, perhaps more around the features that are available. Not sure in which way the original topic was heading, but I'm thinking 4K... Buying a 4K television, or 4K PJ doesn't seem to make any sense at all, when absolutely nothing is transmitted in 4K and hardly anything on bluray either. Further to this I recently heard somebody say the following about a 4K TV, "Yeah, but it upgrades the standard definition picture to 4K" Sure pal, just like my AVR upgrades the image from 720 to 1080. HAHAHA!!! As the saying goes, "You can't polish a turd". I also have to add further to Oztheatre - totally agree. Who know's what is around the corner - especially for us down here in Oz. At the end of the day, it all depends on your budget - if you can afford / want the latest and greatest, go for it... otherwise, sit back, hold tight and strike when the right price May I ask what exactly are you looking for in the new features / models of projectors? Cheers Pete
  13. Yeah, I'd be going the 65" or bigger if possible at a distance of 5 metres. I'm very comfortable with 60" at 2.9 metres viewing distance (including Free to air viewing). But as you say - the 65" needs an additional digital tuner. What about the other ports? Are you going to need to connect anything else to your TV? Do they both have the HDMI ARC (Audio Return Channel). Just something to think about future proofing yourself... Good luck
  14. Where can you get an Epson TW6600W for $1700??? Cheers!
  15. I think Wheelz is talking about the 2 year in house pickup warranty for the W1070. I don't think the W1070 has the in house pickup - that's for the higher end models.
  16. Geez, that seems a bit steep considering you can get a W1070 brand new for just over $900... Not sure where the other PJs were located, but I'd be wanting a demo at least before dropping best part of $700 on something so fragile. Can anybody confirm if the warranty is transferable - ie, does it just go off the date of the receipt (Yeah, I'd be wanting that too). Sorry, I know Blueman123 is looking for something around the $700 mark and everybody has a line somewhere, but or $200 more, you've got peace of mind that nothing has been neglected and a full warranty. Just my 2 cents Without distracting too much from the original topic... If you had to, would you prefer to buy second hand from a stranger on Gumtree, or a refurb from BenQ? (I think the warranty varies on the refurbs). Epson also have their clearance centre, but all items only have 6 month warranty. Fingers crossed for Blueman123
  17. Or return the favour and support the stores who support forum members. There may be more, but... TCC, OZTS. I've spoke to these guys a couple of times and both have been really helpful.
  18. W1400 also has frame interpolation and slightly better zoom ratio. Image/lens shift is pretty much identical to that of the W1070. As for that extra $500 for the W1400 - yeah, that's what you'd need to spend if you needed the flexibility of a longer zoom. I haven't seen anything else that comes close to W1070 for value. Check projector central website for image throw calculations. If you wait around a bit, you might see the W1400 for $1299 again on BenQ website.
  19. On the subject of yellow tinge... Isn't this what happens when you use window cleaner on TVs / monitors? I'm not saying that this is the cause either. Somebody on here no doubt will be able to confirm if window cleaner does make your screen turn yellow over time. I heard it's something to do with ammonia reacting with the screen, blah blah blah. Surely it's worth contacting whoever you can to see if it can be fixed while still under official warranty. If they can't fix it, just ask for your TV back if you're happy to live with it. If it gets worse, tolerate the problem for as long as you can before your warranty runs out. Although saying that, you might need to check the care plan as sometimes there's a percentage of the initial cost versus how many years old it is. This was the case when I asked Dick Smith a couple of years ago about their extended warranty. Back then, the warranty I had was also transferable, providing somebody paid a $25 transfer fee. Good luck, hope everything turns out for the best
  20. Article on high res audio for anybody who's interested. http://www.wsj.com/articles/hi-res-audio-hijinx-why-only-some-albums-truly-rock-1425675329
  21. These guys are official repair for Yamaha. They're on the north shore (Lane Cove), but if you call em I'm sure they'd let you know who may be able to help in your area. I took my Yamaha Bluray player there a couple of years ago. It was still under warranty so they just replaced it. No hassles. Electronics Today, 9418 3366 http://www.e2day.com.au/ Or, there's this from the Yamaha site, http://au.yamaha.com/en/service_centers/ Good luck!
  22. Perhaps more important is, "how far will you be sitting/viewing from the screen?" For your budget you probably want to go with the BenQ W1070, or similar (BenQ currently selling their W1400 for $1299. W1400 has more features and better zoom) and a projector screen and cables from one of the mentioned places on this forum, Cable Connection, OZTS, Selby, EZYHD (check the commercial area for sale area for links). Oh, don't be ripped off by expensive HDMI cables either. None of the previously mentioned will rip you off. One thing everybody says is this, "Buy the projector first, figure out the size of display you want by projecting to the area you want to view (hang a sheet/project on to the wall behind the area you will be viewing. Once you are comfortable with the screen size you are viewing then order your screen." Remember - you don't wanna be moving your head side to side / up and down. You'll get tired of watching pretty soon... This should leave you around $2500 for you sound system, and cables. Again, check out the places on here in the commercial section. If you can't get speaker cable at a good price, check out your BIG local hardware store. You'll be surprised at what you find in there. For what you want, you should be able to get 30 metres of 14G cable for around $38.74 As for receiver and speakers, I would lean towards better speakers than the receiver. Or should I say, go for a receiver with less features than an all singing, dancing, Spotify, Atmos 11 channel etc... Just try and stick with the reputable brands - and with everything where you want a warranty, stick with Australian stock. Stick with 5.1 Receiver and spend more money on the best value speakers you can. I'm pretty sure you'll keep your speakers longer than your receiver (technology is always changing) . Shop around, ask for advice and feedback on here, there's a lot of good people who will offer you help. Cheers!
  23. So the BenQ W1400 is now officially available for $1299 (with one pair of glasses). Anybody got the scoop on new models soon to be released? These aren't refurbished items either. Just wondering if BenQ are trying to clear stock for a new model?
  24. For anybody who's interested, a 5 minute video on High Res audio. Guess it comes down to personal taste and where exactly you draw your own line at cost V performance. http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-30880509
  25. Just for fun http://www.theverge.com/2014/12/23/7444009/vizio-mocks-curved-tv-trend-with-new-infomercial
