  1. Was talking to a very reputable Hi Fi dealer a few months ago and he eventually admitted that the people who spent thousands and thousands of $$$$$$$$ on Hi Fi gear did so to impress their mates and skite about how much they had actually spent than the sound quality. Same with the cars they bought. I later listened to a pair of $110,000 speakers and expected the music to jump out and surround me. It didn't happen and was very unimpressed despite the salesman telling me how he could hear all this detail. Exactly the same detail I can hear on my $1500 speakers.
  2. Very interesting watching Ed Sheeran & Andrea Bocelli recording the song "Perfect Symphony" Obviously in a very well equipped sound studio using pretty sophisticated microphones etc, but both wearing Sony MDR 7506 professional headphones. Available at HN for under $150. Does money buy quality?? These guys could afford any type of headphones they want. Seems to be a massive amount of BULL#@%T attached to the audio industry with a lot of people spending massive amounts of money on equipment, then spending massive amounts of time time trying to justify their outlay. OK, so it's a hobby for many, but let's get real.
  3. The Vietnam War. Another US and French stuff up. And the Yanks still haven't learnt to keep out of other countries problems.

  5. Reset the whole amp. and start again. The instruction manual will tell you how. Front presence speakers are a bit of waste of time anyhow.
  6. Why is a bit scary updating such an old piece of magnificent equipment. I have had one of these amps for about 7 or 8 years. It would still out perform most of the rubbish on the market today.
  7. "Going Home" from Local Hero. Then at the wake, some loud B.B.Q. music. But then again, if I am shouting at the wake and I get the chance, I want to have my wake before I die so I can enjoy a great bottle of single malt with the odd mate that may turn up.

  9. I have been given on old set (30+ years) of Tannoy Venus V30's and to me they are fantastic speakers but I am using them at close range as desktop speakers connected to my desktop computer via a Sherwood amp.

  11. What amazes me about the massive amount of money being spent on some of this audio equipment, as in life, everything is only as strong (or good) as it's weakest point. Inside the amps. and speakers I'm sure they don't spend that sort of money on cables and wires. The most critical piece of equipment is the source be it LP CD or whatever and the way it was recorded and engineered. Next the speakers and maybe the amps. etc.. IF unbelievably priced speaker cables really made that sort of difference you would think high end amp. and speaker manufacturers would supply similar cable connectors to accommodate these things. But, after all it is a hobby and each to their own.
  12. I have done a fair bit of this type of conversion with varying amounts of success. Check out the NCH site and you can download their conversion software for a week or so trial. if you like you anythican then buy. Get a decent sound card for your computer and join them all up. I have connected an amp and speakers to my computer so I can virtually play anything. Avoid using headphones as you will hear every little scratch and crackle from the LP. Check out the internet to make sure you can't buy the CD you are trying to make for a few bucks. It's an interesting pastime.
  13. Is that not what "The Wall" is all about? I think it is fantastic, but then again I have had a lot of my very close relatives (Grandparents, Father, Uncle, Aunt) go through the terrible experience of war and have studied their diaries and letters. Fortunately, I personally have been protected from these horrors. Roger Waters, like many, many others, did not get to experience his father. He is talented, musically, enough to be able to write a rock opera about his experience.
  14. try wagner.net. catalogue is online http://wagner.net.au/catalogue/ Section 5, page 23 Ring them up, they are very helpful and they will post them to you. May cost more in postage than the actual screws.
  15. Pink Floyd, Eagles, Queen "DROSS"???? Go wash your mouth out and break a few fingers on your typing hand... How dare you...

  17. I would happily go back "IF" I could take with me everything I have learnt since.
  18. Just procured a pair of Tannoy Venus V30 speakers. Absolutely fantastic. Have set them up with my computer system to play all my old LP's etc. Also came in possession of an old Rotel R870 amp. which is a fantastic piece of equipment when combined. Unfortunately 1 channel of the Phono circuit does not work so have to join up a Sherwood RX-4109 amp. to play the LP's. Acceptable sound and does the job. Some of the LP's are bringing a small tear to my eye, like the one I lost my virginity to, , but that was a very, very long time ago. The jury is still out as to which sounds better, vinyl or digital, especially when they are played at close quarters, like a metre. You don't have to worry about room acoustics too much or stuff like that and you seem to be able to pick up far more detail. I think digital is in front, as the later recordings have been remastered to improve the original sound. Discuss without starting WWIII as we seem to have a couple of stupid psychopaths trying to do that already.
  19. Had the same problem. If it's a series 5 then the power boards are faulty and Samsung know about it. I had a 64" and had the power board replaced twice under warranty. When the third one went my great local Samsung technician told Samsung and they replaced the TV with a 65" 4K one free of charge. Interestingly, the hardest part about replacing the power board is removing and replacing all the screws to get the rear panel off. With a power screw driver the whole thing should take about 10mins. The hard part would be finding a supply of power boards at the right price. Maybe you might be able to repair the original.
