  1. Hi Wen, I wanted to explore streaming several years ago and bought an Elac Discovery unit. The reason for this decision was that the way of finding, playing and storing music and playlists is important as is choice of streaming service. You will need to subscribe to a Streaming Service with ongoing costs and as you have probably noticed many audiophiles are now relying on Roon as the interface for playing and exploring music titles. The benefit of the Elac unit is that it comes with a lifetime Roon Essentials Licence avoiding the $14 per month or $830 lifetime licence, so a great way to get started and see if you like it. I love access that streaming provides to find fantastic new artists that you would never normally come across in a music shop and now this forms 99% of my listening. The interface for accessing streamed music is as important as the unit you buy. You may notice that my Elac Discovery is currently in the classifieds and a little beyond your preferred price point but give some thought to how you are going to use whatever you end up getting.
  2. Further information: I purchased this music server to trial music streaming and see what Roon and other services could offer. It also gave me the ability to use my Flac files stored on a HDD as well. This small box acts as a Roon Core and comes with a lifetime license for Roon Essentials. Current RRP is $2100. The sound quality of the Elac Discovery is excellent and you can use the on board DAC or use the digital out and you own DAC. I spent a lot of time switching between the Elac and my other very expensive DAC and both had great SQ.. differents but just as enjoyable. 6. Further information: I purchased this power amplifier from Canberra Audio Engineer Bill Crampton of The Factory Audio Engineering several years ago. Many of these amps had been used in cinemas and other professional settings and Bill would purchase and modify them for home use where they were popular due to their massive power and ability to drive any speaker with ease. This particular unit was refurbished and modded for home stereo use and from memory has increased Class A bias and has single stereo inputs and outputs. RCA to XLR cables for input and Neutrix Speakon plugs for outputs are included. A new quiet ceramic fan was fitted but I have never noticed it kick in thanks to the substantial heat sinks on either side of the unit. There is a barely audible 50Hz hum at zero volume if you put your head near a speaker but cannot be heard from my listening position. Original specs for Perreaux 6200B are 270W into 8 ohms, 450W into 4 ohms and 650W into 2ohms and it weighs 25kg. My original system was based on a high end AV Receiver which should have been very capable based on specs and advice but left me underwhelmed, it was a bit like driving a Prius, it would get you there but uninspiring. Adding the Perreaux amp reminds me of an 80's muscle car, loads of power, dynamics, simple, built like a tank and fun. More recently I tried a five channel Anthem MCA50 which has 225W at 8 ohms, whilst very neutral it would lose composure at high volume whereas the Perreaux has so much headroom it just gets louder with the same control and dynamics. I used it in a 2 channel system recently while waiting on new gear with a Bryston Pre and loved it. My family all noticed the difference and came back to listening to music on our main system. If you are are looking to see what your system can do with added power and control, this amp is an inexpensive way of finding out. A box is available for shipping at buyers expense if required. 7. I am just using QED silver RCAs and Tara Labs digital cable, only because they were available when hooking up. Have not tried substituting cables to determine if there is any difference.
  8. I have been running both Analogue and Digital out from the Discovery into my Vitus Integrated amp with onboard DAC. Frankly, I cant hear much difference between the Discovery and the Vitus DACs.
  9. Can't wait for live music to fire up again.
  10. By the way, an Elac Discovery Server was advertised in the Classifieds on Tuesday.?
  11. I'm afraid the answer is yes, you will need more hardware to access Roon. I use an Elac Discovery Music Server DS-101_G which allows me to access Roon Essentials via a perpetual license. You will need one of these or any Roon-based music server to access Roon. This extract from the Elac site below may help. At the moment I would imagine that you will only be able to play your music from Spotify via your connect. The Discovery Connect The Discovery Connect is the perfect companion to an ELAC Discovery Music Server or other Roon-Based music server. The included digital and analog outputs allow for a wide variety of system setups. Built-in Wi-Fi eliminates the need for an Ethernet port near your audio system. Support for Spotify Connect, AirPlay and Bluetooth ensures you will never run out of music options. Embedded AirX2 transmitters allow you to eliminate speaker wires when paired with our ELAC Navis powered loudspeakers. 12. I use one of these units and had no issues with connection. First check would be to ensure that your LAN and WiFi are on the same network. I have several networks at home and must ensure that my phone or iPad for the Roon App is on the same network for connection. Second check is that you are using the Roon Essentials App, not the full Roon App as there is a difference.
  13. Thanks JukKluk2 and westsurf, its difficult to describe these amps and do them justice particularly this one with this much "patina". A tough, powerful amp with enough finesse to make most people happy.

  15. Thanks Ittaku, I knew that the Forum would have a great solution. and bends to the side rather than down which will work better in my situation.
  16. I have a similar issue and have been looking for a 90 degree IEC connector. The only item I can find to date is the Furutech connector, https://krispyaudio.com.au/products/furutech-fi-12l-r-rhodium-right-angle-iec-plug.html. At $145 I am looking for alternatives and will be interested to see what other members of the forum have to offer.
  17. Further information:Selling my Bryston BP16 Preamplifier which was purchased from another SNA member about 5 years ago. Like all Bryston gear is is very well built and has another 5 years of its 20year warranty still available. It's been flawless since I've owned it, it sounds fantastic (quite an accurate, detailed sound which matches well with my Anthem power amp) & integrates well into my HT/2CH system via it's bypass function. There is a minor blemish to the top of the heavy anodised faceplate which seems much more prominent in the photos and some marks where my CD transport had been sitting on top of it. This unit does not have a DAC installed and there is no Remote but a generic remote can be easily purchased if required. This unit was originally sold by Carlton Audio Visual and comes with the factory packaging Photos: PLEASE READ If you are advertising multiple items, you must post one bulk price only, or post seperate ads for each item If you include any reference to pricing whatsoever in this section (excluding RRP), your ad will not be approved If you don't include photographs of the actual item being sold, your ad will not be approved
  18. Are you interested in an Anthem MCA 50 to keep the Canadian flavour in your system? I have a black unit here that I will get around to putting on the market soon, it has been used in my 2 channel system with a Bryston pre since I didn't bother setting up an AVR when I moved house three years ago. I will be selling it to get a dedicated 2 channel amp, probably Elektra Reference HD. Twin toroidal transformers and five separate amp modules ensure that it is a quality item. It's easy to do some reading on these to see if it meets your needs, let me know if you want more details.
