Shipping audio gear to India these days
Sub Sonic replied to aertex's topic in General Hi-Fi & Beginners Discussion
Make sure the funds are EFT into your account, not PayPal as these can be reversed in some circumstances. Fedex is another good option - we use FedEx and DHL all the time at work. To be totally risk free: - have the funds EFT’d into your account - do not allow any “courier” to pick up the goods before you have confirmed actual arrival of the funds into your account. - ship “EXW”, or Ex Works, ie the buyer arranges everything with the shipping company and pays them directly, you just pack, weigh and measure for them. That way the buyer becomes the shipper and assumes 100% responsibility. SS -
The latest little project is a laser cut acrylic case for a member’s project. The files have had some fairly extensive modifying to get right, all done via email. This is the first off enclosure to go (it’s going interstate), we’ll then work out what we’ve missed or what needs modifying, and then do a good copy Just a couple of extra non audio related projects, one is a new CNC router bit holder as I’ve outgrown the old one, with 60+ bits now Last pic shows a CNC pattern for a bronze cast plaque. One of the guys at work has recently completed a steam powered launch, and the plaque will be going on this boat . He built the entire boat by hand, then designed and built a steam engine, patterns, castings, machining and all. He then entirely built the steam boiler to a known design from the UK, as well as jumping through many hoops and paying large amounts of $$ to get the boiler recognised and type approved here in Australia so that it is all legitimate. I think it deserves the plaque! Cheers, SS

Duntech Speakers Owners & Discussion Thread
Sub Sonic replied to Mr Frank's topic in Speakers, Soundbars and Subwoofers
I did find a few Morel 6” drivers in various states of repair. All appear to be in working order. The first couple have dents in the dust covers. They have Duntech labels but no Morel model number, but I’m not aware of Duntech using anything other than the MW166. The third driver has a number of scratches on the cone. The last driver is also an MW166 but perhaps a different manufacturing batch. Cone looks good on this one. We’re really scraping the bottom of the barrel now as far as Duntech drivers are concerned SS -

Aah, right you are, I meant the PCL15. I may have a Morel 166 floating around too, again, would have to check. The PCL25 did use the MW166. -

I also found a couple of Dynaudio 17W75EXT drivers, 6 ohm impedance - which bass drivers did the PCL20 have @kelossus? -

@Fridgeme I reckon I may have a spare woofer for the PCL10 if you ever need one. Possibly a tweeter too but I’d have to have a look. SS Edit: found the spare woofer but no tweeters. -
@THOMO which Purifi amp did you listen to out of curiosity, and which speakers were you using? Looking potential to buy a class D shortly so any info would be great. Thanks, SS

Osborn Epitome Tower Reference Elite and NAD M33
Sub Sonic replied to Lee B's topic in General Hi-Fi & Beginners Discussion
March Audio would be worth a look - seriously looking at getting one myself. https://www.marchaudio.com/?v=7516fd43adaa @March Audio -
The black accents on the tweeter and woofer baffles look great

I've been working on this subwoofer cabinet drawing on and off for a while. It's essentially a "Martysub" for the Dayton Ultimax UM18. There are some basic dimensions on the internet, but turning that into something for the CNC, and also making it easy to fit together & build is another step. It's great fun though, working through all the little items. The drawing is not yet finished, but is getting closer. Early estimates are that the cabinet will use two sheets of 18mm MDF and will weigh approx. 50kg excluding driver.

DIY 1.6m wide "centre channel" horn / stereo speakers

Well done @Andrew Tilsley. Are you going active or passive for the crossover? I have the same horns and compression drivers at home waiting for a project Cheers, SS -
possible CNC 2D BAD panel under discussion...
Sub Sonic replied to almikel's topic in Room Acoustics, Construction and Design
That’s an awesome effort with a laminate trimmer, well done!!! -
Here are some wood screws like the ones @davewantsmoore mentioned above, but available at WES Components/Wagner Electronics in Australia:

@frankn one option would be to use T nuts mounted from the back. The T nut holes could be done on the router (in future baffles) and would effectively self-centre the driver. Cheers, SS

Thanks for your input. Could you elaborate a little more please? Regards, SS

A few weeks ago I picked up a small CO2 laser cutter/engraver. It’s cutting/engraving area is only about the size of an A4 sheet of paper, but it’s been great fun and surprisingly useful. It did need a few mods/upgrades before being used, such as removing redundant parts in the cutting chamber, replacing the controller with a decent one, adding compressed air assist and improving smoke extraction. Cooling is currently being provided by a cheap computer water cooling radiator and pump, pumping distilled water around the through the laser tube and back. When the weather warms up active cooling will need to be added to keep tube temps around the 20 degree C mark. Acrylic and timber cutting and engraving are its strong points. It’s pretty happy to cut in the 3-6mm range. It will cut more than this with multiple passes, but cut quality suffers. It has also been useful in doing a 1/6 scale mock-up for a LX521 that I am assisting @frankn with. Its great fun and I’m thinking up new uses for it all the time . SS

I’m considering a bit of a downsize in amplifier, and was curious about people’s opinions & thoughts about the Moon 240i integrated? I know amplifiers can be a pretty subjective question, but anyway… I’ll keep quiet on which speakers and source I’d be using as these may change, so let’s assume the power output is ok for the sensitivity of the speakers, and the speaker’s impedance may go down to 3-4 ohms but is not otherwise a difficult load. I’d value opinions from those who own or have heard the 240i. Cheers, SS

Thanks @frankn It’s quite handy having a small laser cutter. The model above is 1/6 scale, made from 3mm MDF, so it scales down nicely from full size/18mm. Cheers, Matt

Hi @ericd, What sort of expectations do you have for the case? Ie is it purely functional, or are aesthetics important? Also, what sort of materials did you have in mind? This may be something I could take on (even though I live in Adelaide) provided timing is not too critical. Cheers, Matt

Mine is a smaller one (750 x 1250mm cutting area). The basic unit is around $2k, but by the time you add a spindle, good dust extraction, bench, bits etc it ends up being somewhere around the $3-5k mark.

That sounds pretty cool, would it be possible to post a pic or two?

It was interesting having a play with cutting acrylic with the laser. It cut well, but a better finish could probably be had with the CNC router, and then hand sanding and flame polishing. The lasered surface is already finished, but not as smooth as a good machined surface. The acrylic was fairly thick though, at 20mm. I’d expect thinner acrylic to have a much better finish which the laser cut.

The resistor is well over sized (1w) for the application. It’s sealed with liquid electrical tape and also covered with glued/dual wall heat shrink afterward as it’s in a very hot & humid/wet environment,

Just wondering if there would be any demand/interest for acrylic turntable plinths? I can get thick acrylic (20-30mm) and have access to a 300w laser. It would take some time to draw up & fine tune the design, and then book some time on the laser but it can be done. The good thing about CO2 laser & acrylic is that if you get the power, feeds and air assist right, the edge finish is superb. I’ll be playing with some 20mm acrylic on the laser later this week so I’ll post some pics.
