  5. Not to mention the private companies, who i guess ping many more motorists than the Police and no doubt have revenue based KPI's to meet. anyone looking for work? https://careers.serco.com/ASPAC/job/Melbourne-Vict-3000/520605602/
  6. Community consultation would be a waste of time IMO. Too ill informed of the bigger picture and too many personal agendas. I use Maroondah highway daily and welcome the 20kmh reduction. I'm crossing it though so it's more of a help than hindrance. Same goes for Research-Warrandyte road that I live off, which changed from 80 to 60kmh a few years ago. It was bloody treacherous trying to enter that road sometimes with cars rounding the bends in either direction at 80kmh++. I generally don't have a problem with reduced speed limits (or at least accept that there's little point ****ing about it) , but what I really hate is those relatively low limits in conjunction with Victoria's lack of leniency for speeding. 'Policing' with an clear goal of revenue raising, not addressing legitimate safety concerns doesn't help either.
  7. I just realised I had exactly the same model. Bought new around 1993 when i was in high school, but in hifi heaven since ~2005. I do still have the matching CD player though.
  8. Logitech do decent BT receiver too, similar to one above. ~$30 on a good day, but usuall $50 I think But, I'd recommend checking out some wifi options too as they'll give you better sound quality and no range issues like BT. Such as: - Apple airport express. Best option if you have apple devices and can use airplay, which streams any audio from your phone etc over wifi network.. discontinued so only 2nd hand. Newest model is A1392 and is the only one that supports "Airplay 2" (multiple zones/speakers in sync). ~$100 . Older models should be <$50 - Google Chromecast Audio. also discontinued and ~$100 these days. This works a bit different to airplay as it streams audio direct from the internet using services such as Spotify, net radio apps etc. Your phone only points it in the right direction, but doesn't actually stream audio to it so maybe not a good option for streaming locally stored files. - Audiocast. a bit of a combination of chromecast audio and airplay. $80. don't know much about it. - Yamaha WXAD-10 ~$200 new. Does the lot and apparently very good audio quality. bluetooth, airplay 1, dlna, web streaming functionality similar to chromecast (spotify connect, tidal etc). yamaha musiccast which is their proprietary wifi streaming between devices. dlna happy shopping!
  9. cheers. I'll keep those in mind if I head down that route.
  10. Hi SC, no need to apologise. The amp has been trouble free since putting in direct mode so that's taken the immediate pressure off me properly solving the problem, but I'll continue the troubleshooting along your suggested route when the time is right, which is probably in a month or 2 away. Mrs out of action with a broken knee at the moment so that leaves me with very little spare time. I think I'll still keep an eye out for a cheap 2nd hand AVR to use in it's place (have been wanting to set out system with centre speaker & sub anyway) so I can troubleshoot the old amp at my leisure and outside of the cabinet it usually lives in as it's a pain to access . Thanks for the manual link.
  11. Crisis over for the time being. Pure direct mode and that seems to have eliminated the issue I was having. It got me through the weekend gathering fine at least.
  12. Direct mode seems to eliminate the problem, although being intermittent I can't really be sure but we certainly gave it a good test over the weekend. just to clarify, the channnels aren't dropping out, they're getting a big boost in volume. It's definitely not the motor actuating. The volume increase is an instant step up when the fault occurs and I can tell the volume control hasn't moved from it's usual ~30-40% position. To get back to pre-fault level I need to turn vol. down to a fraction of where it was, say around ~5-10% position .
  13. Thanks very much SC. I’ll give the contact cleaner a go but I’m pretty sure it’s not that. The issue is different to what I’m used to with bad pot. The intermittent level increase is a consistent amount each time and can stay offset for hours regardless of what you subsequently do with the knob. This vol control works fine and sound quality remains pretty normal but there is noticeably more background noise. will put it in pure direct and see. not wedded to the amp, but I am to it’s owner. . She asked me to go stereo shopping for it during the very early days of our relationship so theres a degree of sentimentality. I’d probably spend more than it’s worth to fix it I guess, but not much more.
  14. I really shouldn’t. a stereo amp might temp me to blow the budget but probably not an avr. I don’t have the speakers to justify it.
  15. most definitely a maybe shot you a PM for details. Also a maybe. In Melb?? If so then please shoot me a PM with some details (price, location). If not local then it's not for me this time, but thanks anyway.
  16. Thanks Dave and Ollie. Both very tempting, but I forgot to mention a need for phono input. I'll wait and see if something with phono pops up in next day or so before deciding.
  17. Item: AVR or stereo amp/receiver Price Range: $200 to $500 or so Item Condition: New or Used Extra Info: We’re finally looking forward to a post lockdown gathering at our place on the weekend and my amp decided to give up the ghost yesterday so need a cheap replacement in a hurry. Let me know if you have something suitable. AVR, stereo amp or receiver. Old or new. Reasonable amount of grunt. pickup north/east side of melb would be ideal. EDIT: forgot to mention that I'd much prefer something with a phono input, or I'll be rushing out for a phono pre as well ;(. Edit 2: Decide to up the budget. Might even stretch a bit more for the right amp. cheers
  18. I have a ~20yr Yamaha RX-777 stereo receiver which has started playing up so I'm trying to work out what the likely issue is and whether it's economically repairable.. https://www.hifiengine.com/manual_library/yamaha/rx-777.shtml The symptom is output level jumping up on it;s own. eg. Amp Volume control is typically at ~30-40% position for my usual listening level., but when the fault occurs I need to turn volume down to around 5-10% for the same level. - vol jump is instant. - Same behavior regardless of source. - Same behavior regardless of A or B speakers. - Fault usually seems to be both channels, but I believe each channel can have fault independently. Thanks in advance for any help. cheers
  19. One artist so it'd be against the rules to encompass both the singers and drummers other bands. Green Jelly would be the chaser in that case i guess. . If someone really wanted a lot of variety you could opt for a session musician. Leland Skylar comes to mind. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leland_Sklar
  20. yep, and since its the artist you'd get A Perfect Circle as a bonus.
  21. Very generous., however I think the lucky recipient might find he box is locked to the original Optus account.

  25. When your favourtie band releases some glasses in their range of merchandise it's hard to resist picking up a set. ~A$100 shipped is a bit but I've dropped a number of hints so hopefully get some for bday/xmas/fathers day. https://store.toolband.com/product/TLAM012/frames-rocks-glass-set?cp=109315_109577
