  2. I'm happy to swap the round cage (it has glass sides), if you have the other style (the bottom one in the photo). If so, please PM your address, and I'll give you mine.
  3. I bought 2 primaluna prologue power amplifiers, sometimes run them as mono blocks, and got 2 different cages. Anyway, the shop said, it is what it is. I would have liked them to match. If you have those 2 style cages, I'm happy to swap 1 with you. I don't care which style I end up with (just would like them to match).
  4. I have just watched the video. Thank you for that. Growing up in north queensland it reminds me of getting sunburnt as a kid and peeling the skin off!
  5. Hi. Is it possible for someone who has done it, to give an approx idea of the quantity they used? The Monte Marte gel glue bottle I have is 147ml, for example. If I put too little on, I can just add more? And if I put too much on, it'll just take much longer to dry? So I'm just after the ballpark. Thanks.

  7. If that is your work, it is outstanding. Something to proud of for sure. And the price is cheap for what you get. Wish you had a Thorens plinth!
  8. My 2c. When I first heard a good stereo in the late eighties, as a very poor uni student, I thought WTF??! A new and different experience. Perhaps then was the start of the sickness. On the other hand, imagine 'Bruno" was into hifi. I've come across a few. One must chuckle at the label-obsessed pseudo-esotericism. Tho the fun and curiosity gets sucked out of it. Synergy is the most critical factor IMO. I appreciate the DIYers. And I wish there were many more blind comparisons in tests (but yes, maybe only relevant with the same components). Who said never to excess?? Aristotle? And there are problems, and then there are first world problems. And yet, at night, with nobody home, lights dimmed, the tubes glowing, a comfortable chair and a glass of refreshment, I de-stress. .
  9. If that is the case, good luck trying to prove that in a court! How many successful prosecutions have there been?? I deal with retailers on the phone, 750 to 1000 calls a week (we are very busy). Increasingly, their number 1 complaint is unreasonable, not within a cooee of 'market value', rent increases. Aside from the fact that I really enjoy old record shops, rather than the supermarket type of shops (eg JB), retail is very important, vital indeed, to the heath of the economy. If it is the case that the taxpayer is subsiding (thru negative gearing) some kind of speculation or scalping in rents demanded, that is unacceptable.
  10. Please re-read what I said: . . "I did hear that the old building owner had a number of investment properties. ." Negative gearing is relevant to your taxable income, and you can certainly negative gear one commercial property against the profits from your other commercial properties. Such is the true facts. hey, don't mess the story up with facts
  11. For sure two sides to a story. I work for a wholesaler (not in the audio industry), selling thru retailers. I know of a shop that closed because their rent was going to be doubled. After the shop closed the building was vacant, no tennant, for more than 2 and a half years! And I believe the building was then owned by a new owner. I did hear that the old building owner had a number of investment properties, and it suited them for tax purposes for that building to have no tennant. A little thing called negative gearing. If it is the case that rent is dramatically increased, over and beyond a 'market value', but to suit the taxation strategy of an investor, it is disgraceful.

  16. They wouldn't have come 'biased'. They may have been matched (tubes with similar testing characteristics selected), and unless your amplifier has auto-biasing, you need to bias them. See your amps owners manual.
  17. If you intended to keep the yamaha, I'd suggest tubes. My KEFs sing with Prima Luna power amp, custom analogue audio pre amp. I have a transistor integrated (saving for, maybe, a Naim or Rega), but the SQ and listening experience with tubes is a mighty fine thing.
  18. I wouldn't have sent it with the cartridge in place. Cartridge not required to be in situ for the work to be done, and unless I know the person doing the work, or have previous good experience with the shop, I'll set up the cartridge thank you. But you'll soon know when you troubleshoot.
  19. I assume the cartridge was removed before sending it, and re-installed when tt received back. Have you gone thru a full cartridge set-up again? Have you tired another cartridge (if ok, problem is cartridge). Have you tried another tt in your phone preamp (if ok, problem is in the tt). Probably, could be leads etc EDIT: I shouldn't do this while I'm doing something else.
  20. In my experience (I have re-wired a 5.1) the wiring was absurdly fragile, and the solder at the connector box was applied with a butter-knife ( I also replaced the RCA connectors). Is the clip connection to the cartridge secure?
  21. Yes, I understand that. For good reasons people will have their own cartridge recommendations, but which may or may not be applicable to your tt, and the rest of the system. FYI, the best sq I got from my 5.1 in my system, were ortofon blue and nagaoka mp110. Both are cheap-ish. I just feel that with the 5.1 one rapidly reaches a point of diminishing or nil return, so a high dollar cartridge might be a waste of money. But please buy and use a record cleaning machine. I only have a $150 cheapie. It helps IF you're OCD. I find record cleaning a chore, but I sure can hear (for the better!) the results.
  22. Despite trying 4 different cartridges and 2 different phono preamps, the sound from the 5.1 was always thin and constrained, with an absence of detail and musicality. I currently am using a 1983 Thorens TD146 with a Nagaoka MP200, and it is wonderful, at least compared to the 5.1. I have heard a Sota comet in my system, and I was astounded. I have heard an Acoustic Solid Wood in a friend's system I know well, and I was equally impressed. Of course they are dearer, tho the comet is only a bit dearer in RRP. But the 5.1 will never sound as good, no matter the money spent on a cartridge. I am saving money for a new TT, and I will be first looking at Sota. And I will be trying it at home. I realize and accept synergy is vital, and your system might be a fluke where the 5.1 performs well.
  23. Speaking as a current MMF 5.1 owner, tho it is in a wardrobe as an emergency TT, don't waste your money on a top cartridge. The 5.1 will clearly be the limiting factor in sound quality. Definitely buy some kind of record cleaning machine (vinyl must be clean, doesn't matter how good your tt or cartridge is, if the record is dirty), and save up for a better TT.
  24. Incredible. Most praiseworthy.
