I believe the dac-68 was the model before Ares with less input at the back. for $30 more you can buy a brand new Ares. IMO you would be better off buying the Ares

I liked the ARES so much I ended up purchasing the Pontus for my main rig. Still use the ARES in my HeadFi set up.

have you looked at using a minidsp 2 x 4. https://www.minidsp.com/applications/digital-crossovers/subwoofer-integration-with-minidsp I haven't personally used it as my preamp has built in bass management.

could you please advise if this unit is a Gen 1(USD $599) or Gen 2 (USD $799). from what I have read the Gen 2 unit have an improved power supply.

The Integra 80.6 does not come with Audyessy XT32. It comes with Onkyo's own AccuEQ

have you tried pure direct mode on the pioneer. as some one as already suggested you can get a good 2 ch integrated amplifier with HT bypass or go separates(pre loved if your budget cannot be stretched). I have a pair of the studio 100s driven in 2 ch by a parasound P7 and earthquake grande 7 amp and sound great. there couple of rotel amplifier for sale in the sale forum. all the best.
