    5 Way Active Speaker build....

Are they the closed box ones? I know they have two designs. One for open and one closed. Definitely interested. I purchased some 15’s peerless but my ideal was the 12” SB!!

Made a mistake in weight calculations. Forgot to take out the weight of the driver holes which is quite significant Will work that out later. Trying to find a supplier of melomine fir lengths over 2400 and width greater than 595 (Bunnings largest piece)

This material is sticky. It’s not like normal concrete. So it will stick to the vertical face. You don’t pour it. You spray it or hand press it to the surface of the mould then against the next layer

    This is just not right....

I have used response speakers in my car They are not bad drivers. I just can’t handle the carpet

These belong in a WRX, not a lounge room

I googled the weight of HDF per square meter at 25mm thickness. As follows: HDF = 18kgs per square meter GFRC = 51kgs per square meter 3 times the weight for same thickness No joints if single casting other than rear panel

It doesn’t need foam. 25 to 30mm thick in GFRC is plenty. I will likely use foam but depends on acoustics.

I did. If you tried to get the same structural integrity out of straight concrete it would weigh 3 times more

DIY - HiFi Racks - Stands - Cabinets

Very good question. Will have a look. Think the duntech sovereign was 130kgs using 23mm hdf. This is a much bigger box so suspect the way I am making them to be about double. Will take a look.

Will find some data sheets. It depends on how it is made. A normal bench top for example would be 24 mm thick with 80mm edges. If you want it smooth on both sides then you use foam sheets to plug it then do a thin coat and trowel it off on the underside. With the speakers, they will be 10mm hand press to get the effect I want then 20mm structural mix. Then polystyrene. I don’t need the inside to be smooth as it’s not going to be viewable. Weight calculation as follows: Total speaker weight 228kgs not including back, sound deadening material, foam and drivers. Breakup as follows: Sand 183kgs Poly 18kgs Water 52kgs Retarder 2.37 Pigment 7.29 Eco poz 36.45 White cement 145kgs Glass fibre 14 Scrim 2kgs I could drop the weight by 25% if I didn’t do the face coat the way I am doing it. Yes they are heavy but they are big speakers.

Just ordered the parts for the moulds for the speakers. A lot of material. Kitchen grade malomine in 25mm Polystyrene for the shape of the face 350kgs of GFRC components (white concrete. High grade silica sand. Shrink reducer. Water reducer. Fibres. Ecopoz. Sealer. Acid. So it’s wax. Release agents. Acetone. Black silicon etc etc) Also ordered through eBay: Wall mount speaker sockets. Gold plated. 10 on each board so ordered one for each speaker SMSL DAC for the DSP optical channel to get the 5 channels each side Microphone and software from Minidsp Is there anyone in Sydney / western suburbs that has a good knowledge of the minidsp software? Looking for someone to give me a hand in due course on a paid or volunteer basis

Hi all. If this needs to be moved to the DIY section no issues at all. Can you copy / paste the whole thread? Also, is there anyone in Sydney that is experienced with minidsp software that would be interested in charging their time (or not) to help with the calibration in due course?

So you recommend a flat front face and rely only on the DSP for timing? Does the felt used around tweeters like duntech / vaf eliminate / reduce diffraction?

    Ok. Why is it bad?
