  1. Thanks folks.

Information overload now but you have all helped me in one way or another.

    I'm leaning towards

    • utilising my Apple/Mac products that I have better
    • getting a DAC (no my amps are old and don't have DACs built in)  - hook that up to my mac mini in my main system
    • sorting out my cd's whether it is to rip them or just get them in alphabetical order
    • listening to some good tunes
    • catching up with some helpful old mates

    Might leave streaming until later.

  2. If you have your puter on 24/7 like some of us do with a wireless network or wired even betterer.

And have a PC, flac and a Squizzytoy or some alternative to it. It is quite simple for streaming your rips losslessly.

Not sure if dBpoweramp is compatible with Mac?

Once setup think of Squizzytoy or alternative as a source much like a cdp except it streams your CDs without you handling them.

yep, the macs are on 24/7 except they nod off when i'm not bothering them.

  3. Hi Folks,

I don't know very much about this new fan-dangled ripping and streaming carry on but I am interested to find out more and maybe go down that path. I don't know where to start or what I might need.  I guess firstly a little background might help.

    My gear:

I have three x 2 channel setups in my house. Lounge room, office and kitchen. normal stuff, amps, cd players, tuners and turntables.

I work from home so i have 2 computers in my office -  a mac book that I am on all the time and a PC type laptop that only gets turned on every now and then (for MYOB).

I also have a mac mini in my lounge room that is mainly used for watching Netflix - although I claim that it is essential to have for 'client presentations'!

    I have an iphone

I have a pretty good broad band supply via cable to the lounge room mac mini and a wireless network throughout the house.

I dont have a DAC or any of those other boxes with the funny names and no knobs.

I had a squeezebox a few years ago but didn't get into it so moved it along. I did like the digital radio stuff though.

    My music:

I have records, lots of them.- organised and easy to find.

I have CDs, lot of them scattered all over the place- jumbled and hard to find the one your want.

I mainly listen to radio, vinyl or cd in that order. there are a small pile of cds at each system that i cycle through.

    Me and digital music:

I got into cds as soon as they came out (1984 or 5 wasn't it)

I got disillusioned with cd quality in the 00's and went back to buying and playing vinyl.

CDs became of interest again when i got a decent cd player (Rega Apollo)

I had a go at SACD. that was ok but not much of my music come out on SACD. gave that stuff away.

I have managed to use itunes a few times and have even downloaded a few songs and a couple of albums.

I have managed to share these digital music things across my 3 mac devices.

I have basic computer skills and a grasp of file types, bit rates etc.

I have experienced some good high definition digital music at other people places.

Oh and i have used itunes radio to find new music.

    My goal:

Rip my cds onto some sort of hard drive

    Put cds away neatly

Be able to easily play any of this ripped music via any of my 3 hi-fi systems - only one at a time.

Still enjoy good musical quality - eg as good as a redbook cd through my Rega Apollo.

Add a few hi definition digital files as i go along.

Not be frustrated by stupid itunes settings changing or wireless connections dropping out.  I like reliable quality and hate having to restart or fiddle around getting digital things to work as they are supposed to.

    So what do I need?

    A dac?

    Some software?

    streaming device(s)?

    IT lessons?

Any sensible suggestions and ideas would be appreciated.

    thanks,

    Rod.

  4. G'day Dave,

It's great to see you bouncing back. It was long time ago you welcomed me to SNA and helped me with lots of advice. thank you.

Maybe you should plan a road trip to Radelaide.  I hear bear got himself married!

Hope to catch up with you sometime.

I'm not posting much but still spinning the tunes.

    Rod.

  5. Item: Cambridge Azur 340A Integrated Amplifier
    Location: Adelaide
    Price: $200 firm
    Item Condition: Excellent
Reason for selling: see below - upgraded to its bigger brother
Payment Method: Pickup preferred - Cash.

    Extra Info:

I bought this great little integrated amp from Vladimir Freddie a few months back. see here http://www.stereo.net.au/forums/index.php?/topic/71204-fs-price-reduction-cambridge-audio-azur-340a-integrated-amplifier/?hl=%2Bcambridge+%2Baudio

I liked it a lot and then got an opportunity upgrade to 540a so this one is surplus to my needs.

Has been hardly used by Vlad or myself. has been in my office system playing quietly.

Comes with remote, power cord but no box.

    enjoy.
