  1. For Sale (again - déjà vu - a glitch in the Matrix) is a HeadRoom Micro Amp headphone amplifier - an opportunity to get a piece of history from one of the early head-fi leaders. HeadRoom gave us more options for great headphone listening when they started in 1992 as a headphone amp manufacturer & retailer and I purchased this amp direct from them at Headphone.com. It is good to listen too, really good. The HeadRoom Micro Amp can deliver all day enjoyable listening without feeling you need to turn the volume down or take the ‘phones. If you want to party a twist of wrist gives the same sound - just louder (way louder than my ears withstand). Balance this with the Micro in the title and that it hails from a time when reference headphones were 300-600ohms and you'll be fine. It is eminently uncoloured and delivers good sound from a tiny footprint. For those put off by my comments about it being designed when 300-600 ohms were the norm it had no trouble driving my AKG Q701 cans at 62 ohm just fine and at levels too much for me. The Head-Fi link below concurs. It has two inputs, three gain settings, a volume controlled pre-amp output and HeadRoom crossfeed. The power supply takes an IEC power cable. I can throw one in if you need. https://www.head-fi.org/showcase/headroom-micro-amp.11925/ https://www.headfonia.com/headroom-micro-and-portable-micro-amplifiers/
  2. Lots of interest thanks for the messages I have responded to all. Sale pending.
  3. Always Classic it is a delight to look on and equally lovely to use. The buttons have great tactile feel and the logic just intuitively works. Thanks Willmax appreciate the comment, I was pleased with how they came out.

  5. The Audio Research SP17 preamplifier is great kit and the corner stone of my system until it was replaced by another Audio Research pre. It has provided so much listening pleasure. Purchased new from CAV here in Melbourne and supplied with a new set of Audio Research tubes. This is the model with the phono stage. Virtually unmarked except for the top right corner - see photos. Almost complete only missing the screwdriver and it needs a local power cable. Let me know if you have any queries, Nick

  7. Offered for sale is a Chord Electronics Hugo in silver with the accessories pictured. Own the legendary DAC and headphone amplifier that started it all, the Rob Watts magic at an accessible price and an example of what happens when engineers instead of marketing folk make and price something. In this case it was a steal. Articles discussed how far it punched above its weight for its price point. Possibly the most versatile source of all and at the time no one really knew what it was trying to be. From the Chord Electronics website at the time: "Hugo is a multi-award-winning mobile DAC and headphone amplifier of unrivaled quality. Put simply, it is the world’s most advanced headphone amp/DAC, offering five digital inputs including A2DP aptX Bluetooth, plus advanced 384kHz PCM and DSD 128 playback for today’s high-resolution music files. It uses our bespoke FPGA DAC technology to deliver class-leading sound quality from your music collection, however it is stored. Whether you have your music on a smartphone, tablet or laptop, or regularly use a CD player, Hugo’s advanced technology will transform the sound of the music you love. It can be used both on-the-go with up to three pairs of headphones, and at home in your audio system, thanks to its line-level output feature." https://chordelectronics.co.uk/product/hugo Purchased new from Carlton Audio Visual here in Melbourne. Only one mark on it and I have sought to show that in the photos. This unit has done main system DAC and occasional heaphone amp duties and has not been used as a portable. The batteries were replaced by Chord Electonics in England and they changed some of the charging circuit components also. It has been flawless since. As the next owner you will be pleased.
  8. Hi ctle, I will take this Artur Pizarro is one of my favourites. Cheers, Nick

  11. I took a pair of these O/S before all the COVID trouble began - such a good move. IMHO one of the best noise cancelling cans and the battery life is phenomenal. GLWTS

  13. For sale is a pair of 1.0M Cardas Audio Clear Reflection RCA Interconnects I have always wanted to try these and did so earlier this year purchasing locally from Addicted to Audio here in Melbourne in May. They are a great sounding cable and worked well with one reviewer calling them "fluid and coherent" and I feel this is an apt description. They retail for $1999 in this length so you have an opportunity to pick up an as new pair at a good price. http://www.hifiplus.com/articles/cardas-clear-reflection-cables/ https://www.theabsolutesound.com/articles/cardas-audio-clear-reflection-interconnect-and-speaker-cable/ https://addictedtoaudio.com.au/products/cardas-clear-reflection-interconnect?variant=16064001155 Questions most welcome. 14. I have two rigs, one for stereo and one for HT. I picked up the entry level Marantz as I was tired of volume riding because the centre channel was poorly represented on the TV and connected some old Dynaudios to it in a 2.1 config. It transformed the viewing experience and actually did pretty convincing two channel becoming the go to system for the family. I later added some rears and a centre and whilst it’s better I think the advice to pick up two good speakers for your rig is sound and will fit both your use cases. Cheers. Nick
  15. Could it be a fabric back? The R909 are awesome speakers I remember hearing them and the ease with which they conveyed music has always stayed with me. GLWTS, Nick
  16. I do this when I think some 'cans are not balanced properly and give them a 180 spin on my head. It usually turns out to be the track. I once had a tweeter out of phase and my system did this to me. It would come and go with different tracks that had a different tonal balance. I found it whilst playing pink noise and moving a phone with a basic scope app up and down the front of the speaker at a distance of about 30cm. I felt the frequency dip at the crossover point was enough to warrant further investigation and once the tweeter was loose it could be traced from the crossover. Soldering iron and it was right as rain In this case the odd balance followed the speaker when I swapped them around but I see you have already done this and if I understand it didn't make a difference. Do you bi wire? Are all your speaker cables in phase? I would be considering hearing as well. As Ittaku suggests turn around and see if the bias remains on the same side of the room or the same side of your head. Best of luck, Nick
  17. The performance of this model lens is remarkable. I was lucky enough to borrow one from a friend for a while and the shots remain some of my favorite ever. 24mm and 1.4 is a superb look. If I was still a Canon full frame user this would be gone. GLWTS
  18. Yes Papajero has the link it is a monster thread but it is real and it works. I went down the rabbit hole. For years I wanted to be able to rip an SACD for higher than CD quality 2 channel playback for those albums where the only way to get this was SACD. I was originally looking at a PS3 etc but they were getting older and more expensive then I happened on the above thread. I have an IT background and was able to source an ebay special for $50 and rip SACD. It can be fiddly but it worked for me. I have a handful of titles perhaps six now and have been able to play them back both on the HT system 2 channel and 5.1 channel as well as on the main rig via my Chord Qutest. Regarding 2 channel playback the differences are subtle (Note I think Chord devices play back redbook files very well and this could narrow the difference). Most of the DSD rips played back on my main rig are audiophile "better" ie easier detail, better texture, better sense of space if appropriate though the formats were far more alike than different and conveyed similar enjoyment / emotion. Great albums still sound great. I also like it intellectually and for this reason it will be in my playback chain. I like it sonically but I am not sure everyone would think it is a better sound. Another reason to consider if it is worth it is you can now stream hi-res via Qobuz and buy hi-res via say HDtracks. For me there is no point getting an SACD when a 24/192 PCM version is available (I note provenience of the source material can be difficult to ascertain). I have found the number of SACDs I want are few and they can be quite expensive second hand. For me I am glad I have done it did and would be interested in trying my discs in a player the next time I am shopping in my LHS. Are you able to take your hybrid discs down and see for yourself? Cheers, Nick
  19. Hi Cardiiiii I am interested where in Melbourne are you? Kind regards, Nick
