  5. Is it a Mayware (British copy), or a genuine JH (John Harband) Formula 4 (Australian original)? As far as I know, the Mayware was never sold here, for obvious reasons (higher cost, heavier, shorter etc). It looks more like a JH to me - no front sliding weight like that on the Mayware, and the JH anti-skating bucket for the lead weights. The JH was also longer and lighter - 246mm pivot to stylus, versus 224mm. It annoys me that (I assume younger) Australians think the Formula 4's a British design, when it's an Australian one! The differences include: JH: anti-skating weight is a bucket to hold small lead weights, and it has no front sliding weight, the headshell is a 'skeletal' plastic affair which doesn't cover most of the cartridge body, first sold in early-1970's (1973?). Mayware: various anti-skating weights depending on the version, but no bucket, much larger headshell which covers most (usually all) of the cartridge body, front sliding weight (which made it heavier, despite being shorter), first sold (Britain) in mid-70's (1975 or 76). Why they copied the name as well is a mystery...crazy! John Harband had the JH Formula 4 made in Japan to his design by Risui MiTo, but his next tonearm design, a gimbal tonearm called the Audiolab, he manufactured at his turntable factory in Melbourne (Chadstone). Harband eventually (1981) sold the Formula 4 design to Sonus, who arranged with Mayware for Mayware to stop using the name Formula 4 they'd 'borrowed' from JH (the front sliding weight they 'borrowed' off Decca). The Mayware Formula 4 MkIII became the Mayware MkIII, with the next version being the MkIV, followed by the Formula 5. Apparently a long-dead American hi-fi magazine of the 1970's compared the JH and Mayware, and found the JH superior in sound quality, because the front weight on the Mayware vibrated badly. Australian ingenuity wins again! John Harband died in 2014 in Melbourne, at the age of 100, having escaped from Nazi-occupied Vienna in 1939 (he was a Jew), just prior to the war. Regards, Don

  6. Well in the interest of warts and all DIY, the vacuum pump without the warmer temperature was a bust. Because I couldn't run both the vacuum pump and heater, the horn was patchy, soft (quite flexible even once cured) and unusable. It was all the thinks I didn't want at the time but the soft part I will revisit in another attempt. So all that said, I declared it a success and made 2 more! This time, no vacuum pump and I used the heat lamps in my spray booth to cure it once the carbon fibre was layed up. No vacuum pump means air bubbles in the finish. But the heat lamps have made it exceptionally rigid. Just what I was after. Paper tearing began last night. If I get time, I'll start laying it up on Saturday.

  12. Here are some of my favourite shots from the airshow last year? Year before? Bloody hell... RECENT! It was the first time ever shooting planes, and also first time ever using this particular lens which I hired, a Sony 70-200mm G Master f4. So it was a huge and pressurised learning curve if I wanted to get good shots. Suffice to say, I'm proud of these photos, probably my favourite so far. All on a Sony a6000 and processed in Lightroom. I fell in love with that lens, but I gave it back because I know it's big sister was around the corner, the f1.8. When that came out I just couldn't justify the price. a $5000 lens on a $600 camera body??? LOL! So I'll wait a bit more and get the f4 second hand some day.

  16. Certainly here they are. The big white Totech box is the step down transformer and the black box on top is the DC trap. I usually plug the DC trap into the mains and the step down into that, with the phono into the step down. Also pictured the bag of NOS tubes to suit this stage.

  17. Fair enough. Less painful then sharing with a wife. Also DIY speakers can double up for coffin duties. As usual Aussies are lagging behind overseas leaders so for local inspiration:

  21. I was there for the 2016 Mofo and saw Chelsea Wolfe at the Odeon Theatre. My lord, I didn’t think it were possible for such bass to be created! Wickedly awesome gig. Both visits I’ve made a point of seeing the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra and it’s always a highlight.

  43. Finally had a chance to listen to some albums I picked up last year. I bought this compilation because it had some New York Contemporary 5 and some Paul Bley tracks, but the revelation for me was Cleve (Robert) Pozar. I'd never heard of Pozar but he is a percussionist who worked with Bill Dixon & Dolphy etc. One tune that absolutely knocked me sideways was a lovely Jimmy Garrison tune called Sweet Little Maia. Pozar doesn't play on this but the combination of Garrison on bass & Kathy Norris on cello is a beautiful thing. It's off a Savoy album called ' Good Golly Miss Nancy (Savoy, 1967) '.
