invited by @evil c for one of his lovely gtgs as apparently a new amp in the midst and post an altercation with a meridian (apparently some history of this) so walking in it was .... Hello ! Mr Johnson I presume ! you will note the much loved melody has decidedly moved many rungs down the ladder in the rack there ! with the CJ taking pride of place a MF 2100 conrad - johnson power amp in the mix ! as turns out evilc has been bathing himself in the joys of conrad johnson of late. not a brand ive had huge exposure to in the past so was a good opportunity to appreciate but not to leave things there, evilc proceeded to pull a rabbit out the hat with another CJ ! in CA200 integrated. and an interesting piece it is, with a passive pre integrated in ... hence removing all the fluffing about that goes with passive pres and working in with its built in integrated power which is a gutsy thing. Overall in brief listening it had quite an ethereal feel to it I thought, definitely quite airy sounding vs the CJ power we listened to prior. but as goes with evilc gtg, was a good chance to catch up with some of the usual suspects, and with evilc cooking up a storm ! with what looked like some quite delectable char grilled chicken and it was rather tasty i can tell you going with moroccan potatores and very nice ratatouille (courtesy of mrs evilc) we got back to listening after, with also inclusion of some very interesting vivid stand mounts (far to brief a listen to comment) Very much enjoyed what was a relaxed afternoon with great company, lovely food and to experience some interesting gear. thanks evilc I'm most interested to hear how the CJ gets up against the meridian power when it finally makes a 2nd coming !8 points

Runaway got caught up with appointments beyond his control, so never came on Friday to hear his gear! So as I have a habit of doing - extended GTG to the next day with just the two of us getting down to some serious listening tests over a bottle of red. After very brief listen to the Vivid speakers previous day left little impression, we rigged them up with the CJ amp and blow me down they sounded very good indeed! For a small bass mid driver I was very surprised at the amount of low end being emitted, and these babies went seriously loud without any break up or harshness! We then swapped over amps to the Devaliet 120 and this was as sweet a combo as you could hope for - dynamic and excellent imaging for the less than ideal speaker position plus reverting to factory default setting on the Devaliet to reset inputs which erased the SAM Speaker matching so never heard them at true capabilities. But hell I could happily slot them into my system very happily all the same! Great few days of catching up with some of Stereonet's finest characters and a very educational exercise at the same time.5 points

So, following Marc’s review, I purchased a https://www.stereo.net.au/news/spinbox-the-meccano-of-record-players The unit arrived - a few months late - but in excellent condition. A couple of weeks ago my (seven year old) son and I had spent the afternoon building the turntable. We found the plans simple to follow with, importantly, there being a lot of the build that my son could do with just light touch assistance. It was all up and running in a couple of hours at which point he had a great time playing old records whilst I frantically searched for records that I was prepared to sacrifice. The turntable is now set-up in his bedroom and, at least for now, is the flavour of the month. Thanks, Marc, for the recommendation.5 points

No mods.....they are twin 14bit dacs with the noise shaper giving the equivalent of 16 bits of resolution. There is no lack of detail and they are anything but boring . My Oppo BDP95 32 bit ess dac player.....now that's boring ! Most don't take the time to listen properly and of course our brain tells us true 16 bit single stereo dac MUST be better , and 20 bit dac must be better again then 24bit and 32 bit dacs must be heaps better. It just isn't. ....cd replay has gone backwards in both build quality of the lasers and mechanisms and sound quality from these first generation players imo. Anyone in Perth with a high end expensive modern 32 bit cd player that would be interested in bringing it over and comparing it to a 35 year old refurbished Revox B225 or 36 year old refurbished Philips CD100 is welcome.4 points

Since October I have been staring at the pile of cables and doing nothing until this morning when I got the system up and running again with a little help from @nevillekapadia! Happy to see the Micro Seiki spinning again even though I managed to break my nude boron shibata stylus on the FR7f. Overall a good day of getting back into music. Even opened some new vinyl :-)4 points

Hi Lloyd, yes the the web site does need a serious update to reflect all the current products. It is very slack of me that this has not happened yet. We are in the process of changing hosts so once that happens we will do a brand new website which will be fully up to date with all the current products. Hopefully within a month.3 points

Thanks for the excellent write up and kind words @:) al - it was indeed a fine day and after a recent acquisition, (new Conrad Johnson CA200 Control amp), was so excited I decided was a good opportunity to get opinions on it's performance and excuse for a catch up! Had a lot of gear on display as you can see, @Runaway loaned me half his hifi arsenal virtually - Conrad Johnson MF2100 power amp (which I loved and would have bought but aimed higher up CJ Totem pole), his Devaliet 120 control centre, Vivid speakers etc. I did indeed fool everyone into thinking the CJ MF2100 was my new baby before presenting the CA200 , was too good an opportunity to pass up! Unfortunately we spent so much time outside lingering over lunch and drinks, that we ran out of time to demo them all - managed to hook up the Vivid's briefly and then settled down to playing the new CJ and am ecstatic at the level of detail, depth of soundstage, al's description of airy is accurate in terms of the speakers disappearing and the music flowing from well beyond the width of the speakers and well behind them as well, akin very much to a holographic effect! Think I've jumped a few levels with this amp and gonna be a keeper for sure! Few pics of the guests attending unfortunately, @joz & al of course @Point Source Brian (Point Source) admiring temporary visitors After the flooding rain and raging torrent in Creek at Xmas GTG Zen was up for a dip ! Recent dry conditions thwarted his plans however! "Point Source soused " I call this one - much of a red mysteriously appearing on his pants with @djb lurking nearby innocently(?)!! (not a good look on the train home - hope transit cops gave him a hard time) Who would have known - Billy is a whipped cream afficionado Even got @djb into it! @djb @buddyev @Zen Mister3 points

Hang on a sec. There is no clear cut answer for the existence of the Easter Bunny either. Those who claim the Easter Bunny exists have failed to prove the creature's existence, whilst those who claim the Easter Bunny is a mythical creature are unable to prove the non-existence of the creature. That analogy is exactly the same as the present discussion. Cable burn-in proponents have never, in the whole history of human existence, provided a shred of proof that such a concept: 1) Makes any kind of sense within the framework of the known laws of physics. 2) Is actually audible under any kind of blind listening conditions. OTOH, cable burn-in deniers are being asked to prove a null hypothesis. IOW: We are being asked to prove that the Easter Bunny does not exist. It cannot be done. It is, therefore, up to cable burn-in proponents to supply the evidence to support their case. Anecdotal evidence is, of course, insufficient. Faith and fact do not, necessarily go together. Cable burn-in proponents are promulgating their faith as fact. It risks deluding those who are new to the hobby into diverting their time and money into fruitless directions. Much better that they put their time and effort into room treatments or better speakers. Well, given you response, above, it seems you have not read all the posts. Otherwise, you would have ended up with a different conclusion.3 points

The gig was excellent Dave. An old town hall (Sandgate) with bloody uncomfortable hard seats, but this is my only criticism. Enjoyed the 2nd set more, but I've found of the 4 times I have seen them, this has been the norm. But damn, Chris Abrahams needs to learn to smile.2 points

This IMO doesn't get the kudos it deserves. Not a huge McLaughlin fan apart from much of his work with Miles Davis, but very much like this. Back cover.2 points

Well, here's the problem as I see it: I will never convince one of those door-to-door religious people to adopt science and logic as the correct way to approach life. Equally, I never expect to convince those who believe in cable burn-in that they are deluding themselves. HOWEVER, I do expect that my (and others') arguments in favour of demanding hard proof, has convinced any 'fence sitters' reading this thread. And, most importantly, I hope that any novices who happen upon this thread, have been persuaded to demand some good solid evidence from those who promote products and ideas that violate the known laws of physics. In my long career, I've witnessed many novices falling into the clutches of unscrupulous dealers, whose sole aim is to ensure they can finance their next Ferrari/light plane/holiday home/whatever, by selling over-priced rubbish to those who know no better. It disgusts me and I will fight it for as long as I can. Cable burn-in is a symptom of a much wider problem in this industry.2 points

Just got a new toy. But it’s a little bit sick at the moment. Waiting on a check up and some surgery from a very helpful fellow SNA’er. It is basically brand new, the guy bought it to modify. But he got a little bit lost along the way, so it’s sat in a cupboard for a while. Picked it up for bugger all , so should be a bit of fun. The schematic and a list of mods are online so that helps. Hopefully we can get it going again.2 points
