With the recent 100 hr discount and cash back offer from Nikon, I unfortunately decided to check out a few of the deals. Although I don't really need it, on a whim and because it'll end up costing under 2k (with the cash back), I ended up purchasing a D500 body. At this stage I'm not sure what I'll use it for, but at least it is supported by Arsenal, so when that turns up it'll be compatible will all the bodies I currently own. The D5300 I currently use for bird and plane photography does a pretty good job, and what I like it is lightweight and has inbuilt GPS for geotagging the files. Arsenal will also do this so I'll have the functionality with all the bodies I end up using it with. Looking forward to giving the D500 a try over the weekend.

All's well that end well? Well, maybe so. The beast is back and working a treat (touch wood) After leaping through all manner of hoops, - aflame and non fiery, my techie has come good. He's described to me all he had to go through to get it fixed and the debt he (and I) owes to Cameron at Max Media for his enormous help finding a resolution to this. Whilst I can't go into too much detail of the in and outs or the finer details of what was done and how, I now have a much replaced, improved and upgraded unit that is a real pleasure to have back in my system. The end result is quite special, I'd forgotten just how bloody good this pre/DAC could be. Now that the Rotel pre has been relegated back to the laundry cupboard I'm spinning vinyl like a dervish's pimp. and loving the beautiful sounds. Of course a saga like this ain't gonna come cheap and I'm severely lighter in the hip-pocket by well into four figures, but such is life, and my kids are just going to have to be a little more disappointed with their inheritance. (Though not too soon I hope) Why vinyl when the AMR is supposed to be one of the better DAC's around? Well Murphy's law applies here, as it seems to do to all my life, and the power supply to my Bel Canto CD player crapped itself the same time as I got the AMR back. So no digital as that's my only source. I know, bad luck hangs around like a rude smell in a lift, but hopefully once I get that replaced I should be right for a while. So anyone got a 12v - 1.5A - 18w, power supply they want to sell? of a decent quality of course. How I'd love the matching Bel Canto one, but they seem to have stopped making them and would be bloody exxy for my diminished wallet. I've called in at W.A.R. audio a couple of times to see if he has anything as he used to be the BC importer but I can never catch him there. Anyone still have contact with Pat? Otherwise I may take up an offer from one of SNA's regulars Clay, who makes PS's though I haven't got too much info on his gear. Anyway, vinyl is no hardship for a while so I'll survive.

Hamid Drake - Sylvain Kassap - Heads or Tails. CD A fantastic 2 disc set, with a live set on one disc, and the other a studio recording. This is a beautifully mastered release, both Kassap's clarinets and Drake's drum are so well recorded and it really sounds great. The telepathy, understanding and interplay between the pair are out of this world. I've quite a few albums with Drake on board but until now was unfamiliar with Kassap. Wow, if you like clarinet, check this guy, and this album out. http://www.freejazzblog.org/2017/07/hamid-drake-sylvain-kassap-heads-or.html

RONE The Omega Project - The Dining Room "Renowned Melbourne street artist Rone is no stranger to the intersection of beauty and decay, and you'll find this theme tying together much of what he puts his hands to. But his latest work really slaps you in the face with it — part exhibition, part installation, the artist's newest large-scale works are located inside an abandoned weatherboard house in the Melbourne suburb of Alphington. Dubbed The Omega Project, Rone has transformed each room in the house — including the kitchen, dining room and bedroom — into haunting mini installations. He spent weeks working his magic within an actual demolition zone, given free reign by developers to transform the last remaining house on the former Amcor paper mill site from an early-1900s weatherboard cottage into what he describes as 'a fantasy film set'. In striking contrast with the surrounding destruction, the space features the artist's signature Jane Doe portraits adorning the walls, while interior stylist Carly Spooner has gone all out with the chenille bedspreads and wood-grain telly sets to recreate the look of a classic, mid-century suburban Aussie pad. This isn't Rone's first time at the demolition zone rodeo, either — last year he held a solo exhibition Empty in Fitzroy's about-to-be-demolished Star Lyric Theatre. And, adopting the transience of the street art you spy splashed across the urban landscape, this exhibition isn't sticking around for long at all — catch it from Saturday, July 22 until Sunday, July 30 before it, too, meets the demo crew."

Wanted something heavy today. Drought by Pelican was a good start. Funny how many times I play just that one song off the album. Although I do listen to the whole album as well. But Sumac just about hit the sweet spot this afternoon. Really hope I don't miss their next tour.

Congratulations Jake! Macro and close-up is one of my favorite types of photography. You're right about the variation in pricing. The other issue is stock availability. Its a bit of a gamble sometimes picking stock availability over pricing, but sometimes you get lucky and get a great price for in stock items.

Then the Cord is not a 'preamp', ols45. A 'preamp' provides: switching between several inputs, and volume control. It appears to be just a 'phono stage' - and a high-gain one at that. In which case you need a 'preamp' between it and your power amps/speakers. Andy

Here you go mate: I'm not the one to diss Chinese gear usually, and they make pretty good amps for the money. But when it comes to valves, there are some issues: - The voltage isn't optimised for Aussie electricity. You always need a step down/up transformer for optimum performance and/or longevity. - Due to the weight, the logistics make them not all that value for money. If you buy them secondhand that's another story. - Quite a bit of risk with logistics not to mention the possibility of getting a refund/exchange. If you're after something new at cheap prices locally, I'd suggest you contact Eric Chan about it.

The dead move so slowly because they have glacier coldness and broken bodies. I was annoyed at the bickering in s7E1 between people who simply have no need to argue quite so vehemently about such obvious things. Yes, give the castles to the Umbers and Karstarks - so they are first in line against the dead, likely dying first too. Right that's those c...s taken care of. Could we see a falling back of the north all the way to that bridge Stark paid so dearly for? Naah. Winterfell will become Winter'Hell. Theon is a good smart lad swimming away from a lost cause.

Its hard to say - so much depends on personal preference. I know people that go ga ga over DSD and others like me that day - yes its better but not a huge amount so. Yet others rate MQA the best of all: http://www.2l.no/hires/documentation/2L-MQA_Comparisons.pdf The other thing to remember is that virtuallly all DSD is converted to DXD for mixing then converted back - so asking if its bettter than DXD is rather academic - there is very few direct to DSD stuff around - indeeed there is very few DSD stuff ariund anyway. What I can say is I think streaming is the future. Norw that I have Tidal I only rarely use my library of stuff on disk. It is the best streaming format, at least at the present time. Thanks Bill

Working my way through Dust by Laurel Halo, and I mean working through it - this is not an easy listen. While it may not be an easy listen, it is a fascinating album. If you want a bit of a flavour, give Moontalk a spin. I found it to be the most accessible track and also the most fun - and it's an album with lots of fun moments. @analog brother and @koputai I reckon this could be up your alley. It's hard to say this sounds like anything else, but there are definitely moments inspired by Laurie Anderson. It's not going to feature in my Album of the Year list, but I'll be giving it a few more spins. The review on Allmusic sums it up nicely - "Dust is very disorienting and not always easy to grasp hold of, but it never comes close to sounding like anything else, and its best moments are highly compelling."

I guess it also depends if someone is designing a commercial speaker which has to fit into (and sound good in) any number of rooms, or conversely if someone (like us) is DIYing a speaker to suit our own specific situation, room, speaker position, listening position etc. SS

Just discovered an LP I almost forgot I had. The Double LP The Beatles 1967-1970 ( Oz Pressing-EMI 1973 PCSO.7181/2) This one: https://www.discogs.com/The-Beatles-1967-1970/release/3719962 I may have played it once, maybe twice (taped it) and it's mint. It sounds very good and has a lot of Sgt Peppers on it, in fact most of their decent music (28 songs), so I think I'll chill for a bit......
