  3. I am almost to turn-on testing on the first power supply for the Fullrange Power Supply. Below you can see the populated bottom shelf. I really like how the platforms can be used to hide the wiring. I've checked all the relevant continuities and am pretty sure it is all wired up correctly so hopefully I will find some time before Christmas to complete the testing of the turn-on and turn off protocol. The platforms are a bit of a health risk sitting isolated up there by themselves so they are connected to the chassis by wire which in turn is connected to mains protective earth. The 240VAC relay coil debacle caused a change of layout behind the toroid so I have had to mount the snubber circuit to the toroid with some adhesive silicon...not sure if the zip tie will stay...it looks a bit unprofessional (says the amateur) as was only initially placed there while the silicon cures. The view from the listening chair is getting a little cluttered. I've had some thin aluminium cut for vibration damping on the steel panels and they are up in my room for the copper paint to cure before being used in the power supplies. The mid-shelves are well underway...not much more to do on these except hook them up. Have even made a captive power lead. Note the genuine Clipsal plug...nothing fancy but should do the job just fine.

  8. Thanks Pete Sure! Pretty much just used common spray acrylics (cans) for the whole job. Not shy of using 2k but just trying to save on costs. After the cabs where routed i gave them a quick sand with the orbital using 200 grit dry. Then a quick sand with some 320g dry. Next was to hit em with some primer, nothing to flash just a dusty few coats. Next was to start hi filling(spray putty) again acrylic can paint. I pretty much loaded em up (really loaded em up!) 4-5 heavy wet coats and let this sit overnight. I'd usually say to let sit longer but we had a really hot day and the cab was left to sit in the sun for a good 10 hours. Next was to dry rub the hi fill using 400g to get it flat, being care full not to rub thru to the wood. Then a slow chop with some wet and dry 1200.(wet being care full not to rub thru and swell the wood)this get the primer filler nice and flat for final paint. The paint again was just gloss white can acrylic. Next was to hang the cab and paint, i used a full can of the gloss white per cab. This gave about 6 full heavy wet coats. Again i got lucky Saturday was a hot stinker and paint was drying quicker then i could apply the next coat. (This cab i'll let sit for a few weeks). This time allows the paint to settle and "sink back" then i'll decide if i will chop and buff or maybe a couple more "flow coats" then chop and buff. The one you see in the pics getting a buff was the cab painted last week. 1500 wet and dry is used to get the white paint flat before using the buffing compound and buff. I used a watered down G3 compound. All the paints were brought @ Super cheap auto. I used the SCA brand, 2 x SCA spray putty $24 1 x SCA primer $12 2 x SCA Generic white $24 2 sheets 320 2 sheets 400 1 sheet 1200 w/d 1 sheet 1500 w/d Generic cutting/buffing compound. (Being acrylics i will also wax @ the very end) Wood, 1 sheet 25mm MDF... Drivers are the "ever lasting" Vifa D25AG tweeter Vifa P17WJ-00 pairing. The most recent brought from jaycar runout stock. Vifa P17WJ-00 @ 29.00 each Vifa D25AG @ 19.00 each All the x-over parts i got from Speaker Bug.... about 50 all up from memory. Magnets cloth and misc $10 Amazing Value and sound for a project sub $350! After thoughts, i may still use a 2k clear over the top..... i'll just wait and see how the well the acrylic shines up.

Item: Simaudio Moon P7-RS Dual Mono Preamplifier Location: Bowen Hills Brisbane Price: $4000 $3800 RRP $10000 Item Condition: Perfect Reason for selling: Not required Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, COD Only Extra Info: Simaudio Moon P7-RS Fully balanced Dual Mono preamplifier. Very high end preamplifier. Includes remote and original box. This was purchased from Cameron at Krispy Audio in 2013 and was 5 months old when he listed it. It is finally repaired and serviced and the digital encoder has been replaced and all else was good. Repaired by Totally Technical in Brisbane who was recommended by Cameron. Given I am using another preamp currently and this is to be picked up from the repair shop today, I thought it might be a good time to move it on. of Addendum: I have hooked up the P7 tonight and blown the cobwebs out. 12. I put the Nuprime IDA-8 through a quick LS-50 run this evening and, happily, found that it is a more pleasing tonal match with the LS-50s than it is with my Lenehans... However, a few things about its presentation came across so much more clearly on the LS-50s and not all of those are good. The first is that the Nuprime clearly brings the vocals to the fore, the second is that it does this by damping down the dynamics of the instruments and the third is that it doesn't feel very enthusiastic. It does fairly well overall but it isn't anything special so it is never going to be in the same league as the Burson, Leema or ME240. The YBA Heritage soundly beats it as well. I would rate it at about the same level as the Opoint 150 (with slightly superior vocals but inferior instrumentals to the Opoint) and that is not really a good thing as the IDA-8 is almost 3 times the price of the Opoint. Like I said over in my "addicts guide" thread it isn't a bad amp but it could be so much better. The Nuprime doesn't accurately convey the weight that I feel a genuine 100 watter should either. I'm going to have to dive deeper to get into the details and I may not have time to do that until well into the new year so this will have to do for now. After removing the Nuprime I let whimsy take me and threw on the little Shanling Tempo 25, 400 bucks worth of 25 watt ICE modules, and gave it a run. It comes across as almost the complete opposite of the Nuprime. The Shanling is a bit raw, a little unfocused and not so good on the vocals but if feels like it likes what it does, there is definite enthusiasm there. So if you like your instruments played with a bit of "passionate abandon" rather than "technical expertise" then you will probably like the little Shanling. I found it a fun little amp to play with. It can't match the Nuprime for bass levels (or smoothness) or vocal tonality but it will almost always feel like it is having more fun playing the music than the Nuprime is. Pretty good at 25% of the price. In an effort to continue what is looking more and more like an exercise in stubborness I have purchased another amp to try with the little KEFs. (thank the 3 call outs I had on Saturday for covering the purchase price, work is a curse but it does have its up side) After Chrissie I'll be trying out the Indiana Line Puro 800 on the little problem bookshelf speakers. At just shy of $900, rated at 80wpc and measured at 110wpc (nice!), I have solid hopes for it. Cross your fingers. Have a nice Christmas break guys and girls, I'll catch you in the new year. Cheers!

  15. I don't buy a huge amount of music nowadays. I've no objection to new music but I find as my hifi has got to the point that it performs brilliantly I spend more time listening to records I've bought over the last 40 years over and over again and never tiring of them. Out of those that I have bought in 2016 my album of the year is as obvious as being hit with a sledgehammer which considering the sheer heft, slam and grunt of the record is a perfect metaphor. With recent scammers on StereoNET, I can imagine some potential buyers being concerned as you are a relatively new member with no trader feedback, and you haven't included actual photos in your ad. It will certainly help your sale.

  18. Well I've never heard a power cord make a difference but then I've only half heartedly tried. I can say that I've found I prefer certain amps plugged directly into the wall socket rather than through power boards but on others I couldn't hear any difference. I would say that power cords are the last thing I'd spend my money on but since I've had a Consonance Ella Baby cord, bought several cords from NZ and still have a home made jobbie from a friendly neighborhood sparkie, I would be lying if I did. So I'll say this instead, even if it was conclusively proven in this thread that power cords do make a difference then I would still be placing them behind speaker cables and interconnects on my list of things to change to make an audible difference. I am enjoying the thread though, so please, do continue.

  20. That's enough to get you angry? Look at it this way - at worst, they are only wasting their money. They are not doing anybody any harm. There are plenty of other ways to waste your money, without gaining any benefit as well: - buying vitamins and health supplements - giving money to religious organizations - buying "organic" - drinking boutique bottled water - pyramid marketing schemes - fortune tellers and astrologers Personally, I reserve my anger for people who not only waste your money, but also do harm. Examples: - chiropractors, homeopaths, osteopaths, acupuncturists, iridologists - anti-vaccine activists - faith healers (only when they convince people to abandon conventional therapy) - anti-GMO activists - drug dealers - home birthers - violent religious cults Do I believe that power cords make a difference? No I don't. I think they look nice, and that's about it. I would perhaps pay $20 for a nice looking power cord, but no more than that. BUT ... perspective! Purveyors of audio products that provide marginal difference or no difference are harmless. And at least their "victims" can sell their secondhand equipment, unlike bottled water. Why not save your anger for things that really matter?

  21. Item: Whise 119a Active Subwoofer Location: - Melbourne (east) Price: $300 Item Condition: Excellent Reason for selling: Not used Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal buyer pays fees, COD Only Extra Info: One of the best smaller subs I've heard. Havent needed it with my latest speakers but have hung on to it just in case cos I love it. Fast and dynamic with a lot of adjustment. Couple of minor marks on it but nothing serious, could be black texta'd easily. The frequency cut off selector switch can be sticky and cause a no sound issue. I just treated the switch with deoxit and works ok ish. once set is fine, is not something you would use often. Pictures:

  23. I am curious to know when you play your musical instruments and enjoying it, how do you know if you are playing it well, or whether it is all in your head? EDIT: I like to think you are a skillful player so your music is naturally enjoyable to yourself and others. When you have bad days and don't perform well, you can tell by listening, regardless of any bias in your head.

  25. The reason DBTs etc have taken over this thread is because people feel comfortable discussing them. And because it diverts attention from the real issue - namely, whether expensive power cables sound better than stock ones. It's interesting that no one has attempted to refute any of the information or logic put forward by ZB at the start of the thread.

  30. My new tubes turned up today , not bad 6 days from England . I installed the new Tung-Sol ECC83/12AX7-R and 6SN7GTB , and the Gold Lion KT88's . Immediately there is a difference , lots more base which what I was wanting . I will enjoy the new sound for a while before I try out the KT120's . Also my amp has manual mA adjustment , the old Chinese valves ran at 28 mA , should i run the new ones at the same mA . Hope that makes sense to someone out there that can help .

  31. I was originally looking at that thread but found it heavy going as you have to trawl through hundreds of posts just to find the useful stuff. If I post the 2 different types of Ad844 conversion, one with buffer and one without are you able to attach those diagrams to your first post to help others out?

  32. BTW Anyone who wants to try their own triple stacked AD844 I/V stage and various buffers after it. I started a DIY for it over at DiyAudio, quite popular with some heavy hitters chiming in, be prepared it's large over 1800post 95 pages and 1/4 million views. It gets into the much better sound of double then triple stacking that I did of the AD844 around half way through. Our Mick Melony (Supratek) (Statman on the site) even tried quad stack 844's on his TDA1541 converter. http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/digital-line-level/227677-using-ad844-i-v.html Cheers George

  33. I think most here would agree that IC make a difference. Whether it be RCA or XLR. If I were to experiment on cables this is where I start, and you don't need a DBT to note the difference.

  43. I prefer Audyssey on for music, with DynamicEQ OFF. Though I am not someone who usually sits down and listens to music with a MLP in a perfect equilateral triangle from the front speakers, I tend to have music on when I'm cooking ,cleaning, yapping with mates or kicking back on the couch. For movies, Audyssey is always on, with DynamicEQ usually ON at -5dB RLO. It makes a huge improvement in my room and is easily noticed between off and on

  44. A mate on DIYAudio referred me to these articles: http://shure.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/4072/~/high-fidelity-phonograph-cartridge---technical-seminar#DesignConsiderations @catman, if you haven't seen these before, I think they will interest you (given your stable of Shure carts ). My mate told me to look at Fig 1 in L R Happ's article (p42), as I had asked what output should a phono stage have, to not cause a 2v-input ADC to clip (when the phono stage is feeding the ADC). His answer was ... you need to allow 20dB - ie. 10x - headroom. So, for a 2v-input ADC, the phono stage needs to deliver 2v from a 50mV input signal, in the case of an MM phono stage. (And the phono stage shouldn't clip at 50mV input!) The gain for an MC phono stage should deliver 2v from, in my case, a 3mV input signal. Regards, Andy
