  5. Hello, Another day out looking for native orchids, This one is a bit special as it is found only at one locality and we were fortunate enough to be invited to see and participate in counting flowers this morning. This one was the only two headed plant found, a rarity.

  6. And you are about to explain how a driver can move the air fast enough without moving its coil fast enough? What? Because a coil driver can't move air even though it moves its coil? More likely because too many purist ESL owners refuse to put a HP crossover on their panels, so they are building in a phase problem. Way to go alright, if you want wimpy, rolled off bass that has no extension and so sounds a bit like one's ESL panel. See last paragraph. er, so, with the lightest touch of digital delay I could make the ESL appear to be playing ever so slightly behind the beat? Look, it's all got nothing to do with 'speed' in the sense being described. The integration problems are mostly due to the sub not being properly implemented, by which I mean extensively equalized at the listening position to flat, deep, and the same level as the main speakers at crossover, and said crossover being correctly applied to both mains and sub. When you just plonk a sub in the room with none or partial EQ, the uncorrected room contribution is what rings horribly and sounds 'off' and dare I say, 'slow'.

  9. Item: Naim SuperUniti Location: Hobart Price: $5500 Reduced:- $5000 Item Condition: Near New Reason for selling: Rationalising gear - raising house deposit Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, COD Only Extra Info: Purchased brand new & arrived in June 2016. Had to wait for the latest shipment to arrive. This compact, all-in-one unit is the best bit of front-end kit I've ever owned. I was a tad apprehensive when it arrived, but it proved to be simple to set up and simple to use. Typical perfectly-balanced Naim sound. (Never heard a Naim I didn't love!) Does the lot - FM/DAB tuner, DAC, Internet radio, stream music from a PC or NAS. Specs, features, Owner's Manual, reviews, etc are available online. I purchased this more or less on a whim as part of my 'Why die wondering?' phase and don't regret it one iota. It's a fantastic machine. Re RFS:- Daughter has just bought her first home and I have agreed to assist with her deposit. To this end, and as I have far too many amplifiers anyway, funds need to be freed up - the Naim has become the first cash-cow. And some other stuff to follow. Gives me an excuse to reduce the inventory, but I know I'll regret this action down the track. Such are priorities..... Note:- fascia is brushed aluminium - I cant find a fault on it but the flash pics make it look somehow smudged. In short - as you would expect - Perfect cosmetic & operational condition. Comes with original (double) box, remote control (phone / iPad app also available), speaker plugs. Locals welcome to audition. Pictures: Attached

  15. The $64 question. From covers33 at retail prices. Polylined paper sleeves for 1000 - 170 pounds or 30 cents each Paper sleeves - 1000 for 120 or 22 cents each That is 8 cents difference at retail price. Wholesale would be no more than 5 cents more per lp. For albums that have inside cardboard lyric sheets, plain poly sleeves would probably be same price. This does not include labour, nor does it include the large number of returns due to the fact lp's have been scratched while being inserted into paper or cardboard sleeves.

  20. I had a moment last night. Figured I'd share it. A wee rant... So my wife bought me a copy of Black Star. And I was in love with the concept behind the album from the moment I heard about it. Here was one of the greatest artists and showmen I’d ever had the pleasure of falling in love with and in the face of being diagnosed with a terminal illness, he goes back into the studio one last time to paint us one more picture. Most of us, in the face of such a diagnosis would be shell shocked. We’d be content to rest on our laurels. We’d announce loudly our diabolical luck and allow the world to embrace us one last time in celebration of the incredible body of work we had pieced together over the 40 plus years of our ever divergent career. Not David Bowie. He told no one. He said nothing and he went back to work. He put his head down and set to work to give his fans, and indeed the world, the single most beautiful goodbye we could ever have wanted - but never really expected. In his physical decline, he found his artistic peak and he committed it to tape for us as his parting gift. I didn’t want to hear it. I knew what he had done and I was actually physically moved by the wrenching beauty of such a pure statement of artistry. But I didn’t want to hear it. I had parted ways with Mr. Bowie way back in the early 80s. And I didn’t even discover the guy until the late 90s. But his best work had been done and now he was just taking encores and running the odd victory lap to top up the coffers. Wasn’t he? He always remained an interesting figure though. Ever enigmatic. And quite the astute businessman too as it turned out. I didn’t mind reading interviews or hearing other artists pay tribute to our great musical chameleon, I was just quite certain in my own closed mind that he had peaked. Bowies mind never closed. He never stopped. I just thought I knew better and stopped looking. Meanwhile he kept doing what he did; trying on different hats and furthering his understanding, and mastery of, pop music. So I came into this knowing I could only be disappointed. I loved the man as an artist. I loved the statement he had made. I loved that he died within hours of its release. But listening to the album could only possibly let me down. He couldn't meet my expectations and I knew this and I accepted it and I loved him anyway. Well, we decided to have a listen last night. And I know that in polite society I oughtn’t mention that we had a few wee ‘treats’ beforehand to bring our consciousness into line with the occasion. And we revved up with a retrospective and a few favorites first and we dimmed the lights and had lava lamps going and made sure the kids were out of the house and we lay down on the couch together and dropped the needle. I wasn’t front and center, there was no audiophile pretense - we just wanted to say a belated goodbye to a guy we never knew and yet had given us just so much. And right out of the gate, there it was. That vocal. I knew it was coming from having heard Sue (or in a season of crime). I’m not taken by it. On one level it’s the Bowie signature vocal. On the other hand, it’s something that came as he aged and as his work lost relevance to guys like me. But musically. Musically and emotionally. What I was hearing was absolutely sublime. A lush, dense soundscape that picked threads from every genre he’d ever dabbled in and then some. It was something unlike anything I had ever heard before. Waves of sound and layers of texture rising and falling and crashing and cascading and blooming and fading all under the guidance of a true master at the absolute peak of his artistic and creative ability. Gone were the many hats he’d worn along the way. It might have been tempting to a lesser artist to revisit the characters of old in a great w@nking, self indulgent nod to himself. Bowie eschewed any idea of giving the Thin White Duke or Ziggy or Alladin Sane one last gasp and painted us instead a picture that was entirely new. The colours were vivid and astounding. The first side seemed hopeful. Grateful. Thankful. It spoke of love in warmer colours and a vaguely ethnic undercurrent in the musical landscape seemed a beautiful tribute to his Somali born wife. The second side was colder. Darker. But no less full. It was emotive. It was emotional. It was goodbye. And I must confess, it happened. I welled up. Lying there on the couch with my lover, my favourite person in the world and listening to this perfectly beautiful goodbye from a friend I’d never met, I had an emotional response on a level I never thought music could bring me to. And what an honour and a privilege it was. As we wandered down this misty path toward the end of the second side, an anger grew in the music. This was heavier, darker and more intense than anything I’d heard Bowie do before. Darker than anything I ever might ever have expected from him and perhaps even thought him capable. It was brave. It showed an incredible strength of human spirit. It was defiant. It was uplifting and it celebrated life while giving a raised middle finger to death. And it wasn’t accessible. It wasn’t melodic pop. If your idea of definitive Bowie is China Girl - then you're going to struggle with this one. He wasn’t going to throw us an easy ball right at the end, no sir. He challenged us one last time to follow where he led. And it was difficult, and it was winding, and it was triumphant and it was everything I’d ever thought it couldn’t be. And then it stopped. Just like that. A suspended finish. Here one moment, galloping along at full stride, a living, breathing, moving wall of sound. And then it stopped. David Bowie has left the building ladies and gentlemen. There will be no more. There will be no encores. The next album will not pick up where this album leaves off because there will not be a next album. He left us hungry. He left us unfulfilled. He left us begging for more. And then he left us here on this earth. Left us to wander through his legacy. To wonder who he was. To ponder what we had and who we had lost. David Bowie is gone. And he left us hanging. And that is the single most wonderful act of intense artistic purity and beauty I shall ever witness, I suspect. So fu@king pure. A twinkling star of light escapes his winking eye as the curtains come down, one last time. Goodbye Mr. Starman. I loved you.

  21. AudioGeek - you are certainly on the ball re tech details. Actually I already have a sample AK4497EQ DAC chip & have built up a prototype. I have done some brief comparisons between the two & there does not seem to be much of a difference. In the Klein DAC I run the AK4490EQ at 6.8v (max 7v) for the analogue section & that is definitely better than 5v sound wise. With the AK4497EQ the data sheet does not show a 7v option for the analogue section so the AK4490EQ seems to have an advantage there. With my new upcoming DAC/Pre there will be a very reasonable cost upgrade option to change the digital board over to a AK4497EQ version if desired. It is modular with a totally separate boards so it is easy to swap the small digital board. The Amanero USB unplugs so that can be swapped over which reduces the cost. When I get more time I will do some more in depth comparison between the two chips & report back. I think the AK4497EQ may be delayed for commercial production - it is past the ETA now. I keep quizzing AKM about it but get no response. PS Demondes this link will bring up the updated website http://gieseler.com.au/ProductsPage/index.html There is glitch we are working on where the old one keeps popping up Glitch now fixed

  26. I think the new Nick Cave album is incredibly poignant, it's tinged with so much sadness, he has really laid his hurting soul bare on this. When the opening line of the first song is You fell from the sky, crashed landed in a field near the river Adur." you know it is going to be an emotional and powerful ride. I was floored the first time I heard this track and it has been years since I have felt this way about a song

  27. Hmmm, 12 months is not a very long time. Given the extremely high cost of these tubes, I would be very unhappy if my tubes died at, say, 18 months from purchase. I would like to think they would last decades, not months.

  28. so here it is as got it a bit of stuff in the box, and here it is ! and back, comes with out eye piece attached ... perhaps to prevent damage in transit ? anyways easy enough to pop on. will have to explore further what this curious cable is for, probably just the usb hookup...but dont understand the curious bracketing and such on end of it ...will check out ... great to see indeed canon is making these in japan.... both batteries come flat from the factory, so charged one and really only enough time for a quick selfie sorry some very early impressions and gee you notice this pretty quick in handling... it does feel lighter in the hand. the on switch is quite positive in action. checking auto focusing ... it is very quick and snappy even in our dimly lit lounge room (with only one 5w lamp on) this is an improvement in speed of focus for sure in non ideal conditions. and what is most noticeable ...when you go click...well its this very controlled shutter-mirror action and the shot is taken compared to the kind of whirr clack shutter action as would get with the 5Dmk3 that was spring actuated. feels a step up in build and in use given this refinement. very obvious too opening the card slot to put a card in or take out ... notice the more rubbery feel of the seals actuating when opening closing ... this is no doubt the additional weather sealing they talk about. live view in my very brief play works a treat in my every brief play given the new auto focus choices !

  39. Yes, Chris H uses some beautiful woods. However, there's no reason why you couldn't: a. get a 'Duc' plinth - see here: b. or if you can find some nice wood, get your mate to make one. Vince "Once Analog" Hamilton made me a beautiful plinth 5 or 6 years ago. I wanted some wood with a figured grain and, after a year of looking, he found a plank of Tasmanian Myrtle. Here are some pics: This was to my design: I wanted 25mm thick walls - not the standard 18mm. (A mate of mine made a 25mm thick plinth for his Thorens and, lo and behold, it delivered better bass. As did my new plinth! ) I also made it 100mm deep. But I wanted the outside dimensions of the plinth to be the same as a standard Linn (and Woodsong) plinth. This meant making a shallow, 6mm-wide rebate for the top-plate on the LHS of the plinth and a 20mm deep rebate for the armboard on the RHS. Which was a lot of work for Vince! I also wanted (hidden) mortice & tenon joints - not mitre corners. (As you will know from any Victorian door, m&t joints are much stronger than mitre corners and so you don't need the angle brackets to stiffen it up.) When thinking about the mechanical aspects of the plinth design, it seemed to me that the Linn way of doing things ... could be improved! As you will know from your current plinth, the top-plate sits on 6mm wide strips of wood which are fixed to the plinth walls on 3 sides. So the exit path for vibrations which are generated in the top-plate by the motor is: from the top-plate down into the supporting strips. from these support strips, sideways into the plinth walls. Whereas by making a plinth which has wider walls and a rebate for the top-plate ... means that vibrations simply go down from the top-plate into the plinth walls. This seemed to me to offer a much more direct vibration path ... which can only be a good thing! So why don't Linn do this? - easy!! It would cost too much for a commercial manufacturing exercise. Good luck, Andy

  44. For a change I'm reviewing some Jamaican style dark Rums; First of all we can discount the local offering. In a moment of madness and jetlag I bought 2 litres of Bundy OP at the duty free. I had to give it away. Nothing I did with it made it drinkable. I'll qualify all of this by saying I sip rums straight and don't disguise the flavours with 'American Champagne' or other fizzy pops. No 1. Ron Zacapa Centenario Systema Solera. Smooth and redolent of caramel and vanilla. I have not tasted a better rum. Costly but worth every cent. 2. Angostura 1919 8 Year Old Rum. Surpassingly good for the price. Again rich with caramel and a smooth finish. 3. Appleton Estate Extra 12 Year Old Rum. Tying here for third place with Pussers. I haven't had the opportunity to sample them at the same time but I suspect the Appleton may edge the Pussers out slightly on after taste. 3. British Navy Pussers Rum. Blue Label. Very drinkable unmixed and no major faults. Avoid Bacardi 8 year old. It tastes like it has been aged 1 year in wood and 7 in stainless steel. It can be redeemed somewhat by the addition of a whole split vanilla bean. It nearly compensates for the rough 'cough medicine' finish.

  45. Elvis Presley - I'm Leavin. originally released for 2016 RSD now under general release. This compilation is his country/folk songs from the 1966-1973 period, mostly recorded at RCA Studio's in Nashville. I think it is going to be hard for any music lover not to like this album - Its a great selection of less known songs that really shows that Elvis could literally sing anything. only 5000 copies pressed globally , be quick. Euro vinyl pressing is superb as is the sound quality. 5 stars back cover

  46. I had a never ending catalogue of mechanical issues (costing much more than the cars themselves) with three Peugeots, two Renaults, an Alfa, a Volvo and a Saab before a common denominator hit me.... I then had to 'lower' my standards and buy a second hand Lexus. Wish I'd done it ten years ago. Am sure I'd still have the same car, more money and fewer wrinkles.
