  1. Why's that Paul? Kicking back with Jimbo, Ray and Robbie. From the Infinite box set. Goddamn this sounds good! Hope the neighbours enjoy The Doors as much as I do. Thankfully, they seem to have similar musical tastes to me and I get away with murder in an apartment. Definitely a desert island record for me - I can't think how many times I've listened to this record, but there would have to be two zero's in that number at the very least.

  2. Listening to Led Zeppelin II I've never been much of a fan of LZ. I find much of their music bloated, long winded and ever so slightly bombastic. During the week I had the opportunity to plonk a NM original UK copy on my TT and let me tell you, the hairs on the back of my neck stood up. It sounded sensational and gave me a new appreciation for the band. I'm still never going to be their biggest fan, far from it, but I genuinely enjoyed what I heard. After this experience, I thought I would visit HD Tracks and download a hi-res version of the album to see how that would compare. The results were disappointing to say the least. The music seems squashed in comparison - it's hard to put in words, but it just doesn't sound as convincing. I'm not trying to start a format war here. I've got plenty of albums on both vinyl and digital - in some instances, the digital sounds better. In others, like this, the vinyl is more immersive. Am I going to rush out and buy a NM copy of the 1st UK pressing? With prices well over $1,000 not any time soon - I still don't like LZ anywhere near enough to spend that much! But I really enjoyed the experience - and many thanks to the owner for sharing the experience with me.

  6. The Open Baffle woofers are breeding! Just to report that I am currently enjoying well implemented OB bass with the Orange stats. I started off with using 15" Eminence Alpha and Delta drivers and progressed to Acoustic Elegance Dipole-15 in H-frames, which are simply superb. I don't think I'll be going back to box bass too soon. There's just something about OB bass with electrostatics - not overdone and they seem to blend perfectly. You get a nice percussive whack out of a set of 15" drivers that you don't get with boxes and smaller drivers. The OB is doing really well on electronica and reggae that I sometimes like to listen to. Not surprising considering the AE D15 is truly capable of doing 30 Hz flat and 21 Hz +/- 3dB in an infinite baffle situation. The Eminence are amazingly good too, not really one noted as some have suggested. If positioned and E'qd properly they sound quick and fast and bass is plentiful, best bang for the buck I reckon in speakerdom! (well, at least in the USA where the Alpha sells for $59ea, here with the 'Australia Tax' we pay more like $180ea ). With Direct Drive amplification to the Acoustat panels, the excellent OB bass implementation and a Raven R-2 ribbon tweeter (rolled in with a 1uF tinfoil capacitor and driven separately by a 120w/ch Bel Canto eVo-2i amplifier), I have to say this system is sounding amazing! It delivers finesse and power (will play to 102dB) and has a massive enveloping soundstage with hardly any compromises, which is saying something for a stat based system. Anyway here's some pics of my further bass adventures ... Cheers, Steve. AE Dipole-15 in h-frames, push pull arrangement a la Linkwitz Orion OB, which apparently lowers harmonic distortion.

  7. I love my 60mm macro lens. I know I really need to shoot raw — I'm sure I could get more out of these images — but jpegs require less time in front of the computer and I do enough of that during the week. A paper wasp and pelargonium buds.

  8. Item: Wilson Sasha loudspeaker Location: Sydney Price: $15,500 Item Condition: excellent Reason for selling: Deserve to be listened to more than I can Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, COD Only Extra Info: Pictures: It is with some reluctance I am selling- My Wilson Audio Sasha loudspeakers, in Bugatti Blue. These speakers were purchased from the Australian dealer, and spent 18 months in an apartment, powered by a Goldmund System. They were sold to me to upgrade to a pair of Alexias. They have been in my Possesion for approximately 18 months, now powered by a Vitus system, which I will also probably be selling very shortly. They have lived in a smoke and pet free environment their whole lives. They are in excellent condition, 9.5/10 with no scratches, dents or chips. The foot set remains boxed and unused. The cloth grilles are near perfect, with one tiny loose thread, leaving a pinhead size anomaly only visible close up. They are sold with all original packing and freight boxes. Since I bought them I have listened to them less than 500 hours. Since moving house several months ago they have been staring at me, unplugged and not set up as I am rarely home due to my workload. As this is about to increase I have decided to sell them so somebody can actually enjoy them. Nothing needs to be said about these speakers. They are Sasha's. They will make you very happy. This is not my first sale here. I am sure I can obtain references. I am based in inner Sydney. These are to be collected. The asking price is a very reasonable $15,500. If you have any more question please message me.

  10. No. Let us not begin the war again. There is nothing to be gained, no light to be shed and no upside at all. I suppose some may enjoy re-hashing of deep seated prejudices but IF the stated goal is for audio enthusiasts is to enjoy and engage with music why does it matter how that music is delivered?

  11. With a thread title like this one it was always going to be click bait. it also leads to pointless and circular religious debates which solve nothing because there is nothing to solve. People will enjoy music in their own way and with their preferred format. End of story

  15. Jimmy Little: Messenger Definitely in my top 10 fave OZ albums. His singing, and phrasing reminds me of "ol blue eyes" and his enunciation was on a par with Johnny Hartman. It's a magical listen, and superbly produced by Brendan Gallagher. I also had the great pleasure of having a quick chat to Jimmy when he toured the album and found himself up in Brisbane. A humble and gracious man, and a true gentleman. Sorely missed.

  16. Palmer Magic PS this is an early cd pressing (no bar code) done by distronics by SQ is sensational - track six looking for clues is a fav of mine and I've never heard it sound so good - bass line is just sick :-)

  17. Ironically I believe one of the reasons their music remains relevant to so many is because they are so well recorded. They don't sound like a late 60/early 70's dull mess.

  18. Item: Oppo BDP 95 Location: Canberra Price: $200 Item Condition: Unmarked and fully working Reason for selling: Bought BDP 105D Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, COD Only Extra Info: This is a really good blu ray, dvd, SACD, DVD/A and streamer for AV (less good for serious music streaming). Music streaming is limited because of no gapless playback. Apart from that it produces good sound and DLNA support works as it should. I will arrange shipping at my end but you need to choose a provider and pay for it at the price I am offering. It will be shipped in the original box with remote and manual. No links or pictures provided at this stage. I expect that anyone wanting this will know what they are after and are looking for something good for the price of a bulk store brand. Pictures:

  30. Over the past few months I've been immensely enjoying a style called doom jazz. Here is a short definition on last.fm. Doom jazz is a form of music that combines the slow tempos, and sense of despair of doom metal with jazz style and sensibility. The music usually conveys an aura of pessimistic introspection, and many of the artists incorporate dark ambient influences into their music. Some of my favourite artists are Bohren & Der Club Of Gore, The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble, The Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation, Dale Cooper Quartet, etc. Here is a clip from Bohren & Der Club Of Gore, hope someone here share the same interest. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AcDfVsQ-qhY

  31. Russell, I like this arrangement too (non push-pull, just paralleled woofers centered), although you do seem to hear what the woofer at the top at ear level is doing with leaky lower mid signals from either side of the crossover point? I may prefer this positioning of the woofers best of all as long as the side woofers are backed off on the amps slightly to give emphasis to the centre AE D15 woofers. The percussive whack I am describing goes up in scale and dynamics with this arrangement - its addictive and sounds like live music. Steve.

  33. There is also the flip side of this.... where using software where the source code is freely available (often also the software is free fro a $ perspective also). This way the public KNOWS there is no nasties hidden in the software.... and then any person can contribute to the design, fix or identify bugs, etc. etc.

  38. Well it feel good when u have a remote that carved from a billet block . But really there not many thing you can adjust like volume up or down . To me more like the quality of sound that matter most . When you have Vitus well set up you smile the moment you think about come home to turn her on . I have this amp for 3 weeks n got to say i did open new windows to the sound of music that even I'm have no idea it was exited b4 [emoji1362] It not just the sound quality but also the build quality of this thing . At 9k it worth every single cents with or without the apple remote [emoji6]

  42. I am very new to the headfi. For some time I have wanted to try some good "cans" as you put it. Well very recently I decided I'd try some Fostex gear. These headphones are the planar magnetic type driver. Fostex describe this as Regular Phase? I've been "burning them and the amp in " over the last few weeks... The cups are made of aluminium and these headphones are very nicely made. Not owning "good" cans in the past I was surprised at how big they appeared on my head. And they initially seemed heavy (suppose anything other than earbuds will!). But I soon have got used to them, and they are very comfortable, head-ear grip just right. I can wear these for long periods without any issues. I am driving these with a Fostex HP-A8C amplifier. I figured I'd play it safe first and start to experiment with other amps later on. To me these sound just wonderful. they are very neutral, with a silky midrange and good bass. Its a really nice balanced and open sound, and the detail, well of course in my experience I have never heard such detail before from headphones. For my predominant music taste, these are really nice for jazz and acoustic and vocals. At first I was thinking -- hang on where is the bass, but it is there, its just that its right. I have not really turned the amp up much to high volume. Think I've opened a can of worms, I'm going down the rabbit hole into the dark and dreamy world of headfi. Very nice..
