  1. Having sold off most of my equipment last year to fund an overseas trip I had decided to settle with some pretty modest gear and focus on other things. But then I got the itch; maybe from looking too often in the classifieds, or just cause I missed having a bigger sound. Funds were still modest so DIY was an option so I got a NAKSA with the intent of building some 3-way classics. However, the more I went through the logistics and costs of DIY things just didn’t add up. I’ve had a thing for fat and stout large monitors for a while and when a pair of JBL L65’s popped up and it was love at first sight. The DIY concept was blown so why not do the vintage thing just for kicks? Sold off the NAKSA and picked up a lovely old Luxman L-510 that hit the spot with its woody sides and blue LED. I’ve had the Thorens TD 321 for a while, now with a Shelter 201 cart and there’s Jungson CDP hiding under the cabinet that I found on the side of the road. The Luxman has a decent phono so I sold off my trusty PS Audio and was able to keep everything nice and tidy. The Luxman also has some nifty tone controls that I can toggle on and off for those dodgy recordings that need a little lift. Overall the sound is E-X-P-A-N-S-I-V-E with plenty of smooth highs and some pretty impressive bass. So I’m a pretty happy camper at the moment and finding it hard to go to bed at a decent time without listening to just on more record.

  2. I posted this on the server thread but thought thought it deserved its own thread. IMO, it beats Daphile, Vortexbox , Audiophile Linux and others. And it can play J-river too ( licence needed). It may not work on all computers at this stage ( more development to come) but if it works on yours it is definitely worth trying. You can find out about it from here: http://www.snakeoil-os.net and download from here. Go to "iso" thread for links http://www.snakeoil-...BS/information/ Here is a screenshot from one of the setup pages.

  4. Woke up too early this morning and couldn't get back to sleep. Put on this, the headphones and sat in the comfy chair with the tablet. Seems to have adjusted my mood to a very good place https://www.discogs.com/Shakti-2-With-John-McLaughlin-A-Handful-Of-Beauty/master/60578

  5. This arrived today. It's my first really big classical box set. I have a couple of 30 disc collections by composers & a couple of smaller compilations. Frankly, I don't know how I'm going to be able to listen to it all. As much as I really dislike the Sony Corporation, I was attracted to this set primarily because of the focus on a record label. I've always been a fan of labels that are run by people who are either musicians themselves, or basically just release what they personally like. Anyway, I'm currently listening to Disc 20 - Corelli's Sonata Op 5 No 9. Glad you like it.

  8. You don't see many P9's or 7's for sale. To be honest, I have absolutely no logical reason to move the 7 on. I've just replaced my phono pre amp and that has got me back in the upgrade mood. My wife is literally going to kill me!The stabiliser is heavy, but I guess that's the whole idea. If the record has a little flex in it the stabiliser helps sit it down on the platter. Apparently it is supposed to assist bass response but I can't really attest to that. I just pop it on most of the time - I've not done a-b comparisons. I do however give the platter a wee spin before engaging the motor to give it a bit of a start.

  9. You don't seem to know much about @@djb (well nobody does). He used to be the local Bandidos member for North Fitzroy. File Photo: djb circa 1960 The rumour has it that he used to have a Commonwealth Transcription Turntable fixed to the seat where that bonny lass is sitting* People say that he mellowed over the years as he traded off the bike and the Commonwealth for a Linn and a pair of Maggies......and catches #86 Tram these days. * The whereabouts of the girl not known.

  13. A seven was 9 cents and a pot 14 cents when I worked the bar at the Warrandyte Hotel and you had longnecks and cans both 26 oz and the smaller ones in the botle shop and Mateus Rose and Ben Ean and Blue Nun for the toffs and petrol was about 30 cents a gallon or maybe it was half that but records...records were $4.95 and you just bought a few every week and if they were duds...meh, move along and try some new ones next payday. In the 80's they crept up to 7.95 and headed towards to 10 bucks, then 86 it all changed but then in the 90's they saw Caddisgeek and his mono browed mates and stuck the price up for re releases and new stuff and the gouge has never stopped since.

  17. Hi howey, I found that (previously Google) SketchUp was a very good program to use especially if you can use the subtract function (you can subtract one 3D object from another). It works and I even have a script which will flatten the object for you to layout on an MDF sheet. Just make sure you decide what thickness MDF you want to use as it is incredibly difficult to change at the end! It works: https://mike.seddon.ca/horn-design/ Cheers, Mike

  23. In my opinion I think $35 should be the top price for a new release album, maybe a bit more if it's a deluxe limited edition. I think for older releases the price should just match the CD version. It gripes me when bands that have sold a sqillion copies of an album re-release a special edition for a premium price. It's pure profiteering. All of those recent Lep Zep offerings come to mind with some well over $200. Too much for a 40+ year old album even if it does come with a book and a nice box. Payback for all the illegal downloading I suppose.

  25. Well I pulled the trigger on ordering one ... will try it out. I'll also have some high resolution measurement equipment on hand in April hopefully and I am interested to see impact on the analogue output of things like switching the wifi on/off by looking at PSU noise and analogue outputs. I'm also hopeful of taking a look at the measured performance of the AYA II in a few different configurations, especially impact of the synchronous DEM clock and simultaneous modes.

  26. Have to agree with Catman on this one, sorry Ortofun, big business is a money making machine whose greed, and that of it's shareholders, usually knows no bounds, and when we are talking about electronics companies, we are talking big business. Here's my post on the "Target selling Record Players" thread, where competition is being discussed.... "Unfortunately, the way capitalism works these days we may not see any benefit . When I did Form 5 (year 11 for those born after the 80's) economics, we were taught the 'law of supply and demand', which was simply, when demand rises-prices drop, and when demand drops-prices rise. Unfortunately these days we seem to have 'predatory capitalism', which leads to 'predatory greed', which often conveniently reverses that simple law, but only in one direction. The benefits of competition seems to have been somewhat diluted in this day and age of 'Gecko style' business practices. I do hope you are right though. " I think this sums up what is going on with TT related products, the demand for which is rapidly rising, and we, again, are the mugs powerless to stop it. I sincerely hope I'm wrong, but I doubt it.

  32. The Revenant was a great movie. Worth all the hoo haa, I dunno, but a great show. Mad Max was brilliant, but as you say Al, not really in a CGI way but just everyone out there doing crazy stuff in crazy machines, all real. Ex Machina managed to create a strong mood, which only the best directors and actors can do. Fascinating.

  36. So today listening started off with Isis + Aereogramme. Still don't know what Aereogramme's music sounds like, but it is a damn good combination with Isis. Then on with some Isis obviously. For some reason this is about my least favourite Isis album. Not entirely sure why, I think it must be the sound/production of it, because there are a couple of good songs on it still, but it just doesn't sound good as their other albums. Time to mix it up a bit after that. And I hadn't listened to SC3 for a little bit, so Second Grand Constitution and Bylaws it is then. Nice. Then just wanted a quick few songs, so I thought Orsome Welles would fit in nicely. Hope these guys tour again this year. And I wasn't going to, but one last one for the night. Yeah. That'll do nicely for a Monday.

Except for this guy.. "The second hurdle is that I simply cannot stretch my budget more than your $8k asking price. Therefore I will need you to agree to pay all costs associated with delivery to Sydney (post code 2112) including the aforementioned insurance."

  41. Boy have i missed a lot this last month. Thanks to Tasso and Chan for your efforts, I can simply order a pre designed choke and tran from Hashimoto when I want to upgrade the JS-2. I like how the upgrade does not involve butchering circuit boards. Did the person who CNC cut the lid have the plan on file to do it again? I would pay for that to be done properly rather than having the choke/tran sitting on the side.

  44. Welcome! Whilst perusing your website, I noticed your power cables and the 'pure 99.99% OFC copper' AUS mains plugs. You've done well to source the Oyaide P-029 clones in pure copper - none of the Asian manufacturers were producing these as of a few months ago. The examples which were previously sold as 'pure copper' were reluctantly confirmed as being pure copper plating over a brass substrate, and this was backed-up by testing of sample products. They must have changed their design since then.

  45. Moderator post: While a fine line in this case, there is a danger that this thread will divert into a discussion on the merits of the Catholic Church and/or religion in general. This, as most will know, is against our guidelines. I have hidden a couple of posts as a result and request that we remember that this thread is about the merits of a movie.

  46. A few years back I copped a ticket for speeding in a 80KPH zone at the end of a freeway. I was only just over and it was a 2 point fine from memory in NSW by the way. When I told the copper that it was the first ticket in over 15 years, he told me to write in to whichever department it was (can't remember now) and tell them that I had a clean slate for so long, and that I realise how important it was to keep to speed limits, and how I would not do it again.... etc etc.. and they will probably let you off with a warning. So I did, and they did Unfortunately I received a couple more fines (both during double demerits), not long after, and they sent me another letter saying if I didn't smarten up my driving habits they would take my licence off me. Happily though, when I last renewed my driving licence I got a 50% discount for no infringements in the last 5? years
