1. I was having drama's with my Bigpond as it was so slow and kept dropping out. A Telstra tech came over and it turned out that my cheap thin 10m coiled up ext cable from the wall socket to the modem was choking the supply. I replaced it with a decent Cat6 cable and I have never had a problem since. Since then the speed has been excellent and not a single drop out during use. Bloody cables, you think I would know that !!!

 3. I'll bite, though I shouldn't. I've owned the dCS Puccini and I've heard both a Killer DAC and the dCS stack. Sad to say, Bill, the rumours you refer to are incorrect. You won't easily beat the dCS. The Puccini will give you much more of what is on the disc than the Killer DAC, and it will give it to you in a warm and engaging way. The dCS stack is phenomenal, and there is no system I can think of in which it would in any way be the limiting factor. The Killer DAC will give you plenty of body and presence, but it is not in the same league as the dCS gear. If I were prepared to have that much money tied up in the dCS, I'd buy it again in a flash. Indeed, if I had the money to tie up in the dCS, I'd buy it in a flash!

 5. Item: Lenehan ML3 Speakers Location: Perth, WA. Price: $4500.00 $4000.00 $3700.00 Item Condition: Very good. Reason for selling: To fund upgrade Payment Method: Cash, Direct Deposit or Paypal. Extra Info: Any questions please ask. Pictures: Yes indeedy! For sale is a set of Lenehan ML3 floor-standing speakers. They are a two-way speaker and I believe that there are not many of these about, and this could be the only set in WA? These are a very refined, smooth and resolving sounding speaker with the typical and well regarded weighted Lenehan mid-range. These are like their much smaller sibling - the mighty ML1, but with so much more scale and bass!! I would prefer local pickup as I am led to believe these weigh 80kgs each, but I do have the shipping crates! I really do need to move them to fund my upgrade as these holding up the process. Happy to audition and answer any questions regarding the speakers. Cheers Pete

 6. The problem is, those dribbling masses simply adore this man and the music he plays. It's OK for us to mock him (and them) but the reality is, his audience may be in the departure lounge of life and his music is bland MOR classical but he brings rapturous joy to millions of old folks who otherwise are invisible to the music industry. Overrated? Not by a long shot. Knobs like us like to think we know what good music is but we are missing the point. Long may he play and bring smiles to our senior brothers and sisters... and I bet he can spell Overrated...

 7. ..and some continue to do 70-80km/h through the 50/60kmh posted country towns...Go figure. That's the most frustrating, as they speed through the towns, and go ever so slow in the country areas...Results is a freight train of frustrated drivers behind in the 100zone, (which is inherently dangerous) then slam into Granny driving the EH in Sleepy Hollow --- Got no idea really have they..

 10. Did this in a bedroom in a house with wind out windows a few years ago. Cut a sheet of MDF the size of the window and drilled a hole for the exhaust hose. Problem solved. Worked ok too. Even put a couple handles on it for easy removal out of window frame.

 11. If its a cheap cartridge on a cheap TT then I would do it myself, but I always pay somebody to do my good/expensive stuff. I can accept that its a skill that I don't have but could develop with time and the correct equipment. But IMO if you're spending decent coin on a cartridge, then the best way to get the full value and performance potential it to pay a professional if you are not skilled to do it properly yourself. I have had two experiences where I saved considerable money and heartache having cart's professionally installed. On one occasion the cantilever was snapped off by the installer during a freak mishap and it replaced it with an upgrade, and another one I purchased was a dud which could only have been properly ascertained and proven to the retailer due to the technician's analysis and findings. I know there are several people claiming its easy, and maybe it is for some, but a good installation actually is a time consuming process that requires patience and a good skill set. Just remember that the sound output of the whole system will depend on the installation of that cartridge.

 12. Fixing up a Garrard that was not in the best condition to start with. Next looking to get a plinth built for it over the original one. Is it worth trying to lube the motor and bearings myself or getting someone who knows what they doing to give it a service?

 14. [Edit: Bigpond user here but I don't use the default Bigpond DNS servers] Choose different DNS servers. On this Mac I use 208.67.220.220 and 208.67.222.222 and can access cattylink no problems. On another Mac I use 10.0.0.138 which is my modems address which has the DNS servers passed through automatically by the ISP, and it can't find cattylink. Not all DNS servers are created equal! If you don't like the look of those DNS servers then Google has a public set as well ==> 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 Telstra has a whole bagful of DNS servers for each state If things worked perfectly then all DNS servers would be identical images of each other but it doesn't and they aren't. [if sites sort of disappear, and you don't expect them to, then (edit: one of) the first place to look is DNS]

 16. This makes sense. I only listen to digital for convenience or where I don't have the content on vinyl. I've never heard a digital front end that comes close to approaching my analogue front end. But that's not a discussion for this thread!

 28. Personally, I would go a 103 with a DAC. Same video processor as 105, so no difference for blurays. IMHO, the 105 is nice 'one box' solution, but you can achieve better sound for less. Myself have been intrigued by the reports on the Darbee Darplet, but given the mixed reviews and the fact that the Darbee version replaces the latest gen Qdeo processor in the Oppo; why not go for the normal Oppo and then add the Darbee unit as a separate unit? That way if you don't like the Darbee on your main system you can sell it or move it to a different system and still have a top shelf video processor. I appreciate that I am advocating for a multi-box approach and that may not suit you, but that is why I am going/ have gone with my own system.

 29. Ah, but how do you determine a superb recording in the first place? Do you determine that by playing it back on a ordinary system or a superb system? Comparing things this way is pretty difficult as one determines/influences the other (the relationship between what is a superb recording, what is a ordinary system and what is a superb system isn't entirely clear). Now if you change the comparison technique and compare it in terms of what you think is real (and what you think is not), things get easier (for me anyway, YMMV).

 30. Oops. So I gave myself a belated Christmas present and got the new Oly 12-40 f2.8 for my EM5 OMD camera. Paid for it and tried assembling the lens on my camera while I was seated on the sofa outside the shop in the shopping centre. Figured better to test it before I got home instead of lugging the lens back again if I found an issue later. Took a close up macro shot of the plant next to me then a zoomed shot of a store logo. And was looking at the preview. Next thing I knew, stern old woman sitting across gave me a scolding for not reading the sign at the front of the mall saying no photography allowed. Honestly, I came in through the parking lot and there weren't any signs there. But I do recall most places have a no photography allowed policy. It's just that in this day and age where every phone has a camera and every dog and his flea posts selfies of themselves everywhere, I'd almost forgotten there's such a rule. Anyway, just thought I'd post this just in case. don't want your experience of a new purchase to be marred like mine.

 34. Hi Audiomuze Actually a great idea. But if i do such measurements, i want to do them right. this would also mean to have the clocks of DAC and ADC in sync, which i am unable to offer with my hardware. But it would certainly be interesting to see if what one can see what can be obviously heard. But to be honest, and don't want to be arrogant (please don't get me wrong), but as long as i get feedback's like these (http://www.computeraudiophile.com/f10-music-servers/whos-used-audiophile-optimizer-windows-2012-server-or-windows-8-a-17897/index6.html#post288598, from yesterday) i do not see any urgent need for measurements. I personally believe that there are also many things one cannot measure but they still do exist.

 37. WRT Heil AMT1's They are also very efficient and fairly easy to drive with a virtually resistive load. So they are very good for valve amps. I also think subjectively they work well with valve amps, they can be pretty hard on SS amps - depending on design. I've got a pair and I can tell you with a lot of experience that the biggest single challenge is to find a woofer/mid driver that is 'fast' enough to mate with them. So whatever bass/mid drivers are used they need to go very cleanly well up into the mids. Ultimately most people give up on them in frustration trying to get a good driver synergy. Personally I think possibly the best B/M driver would be one of the AE (used to be Lambda) drivers. Very low distortion and great HF extension due to the super low voice coil inductance / modulation. That's what I am trying next. T

 40. ...because people don't have the skill or the experience or the confidence to drive at 100kmph constanty. What generally happens is you start "yo-yoing" behind the vehicle. As they slow then speed, then slow then speed. You catch up on the hills and bends and then they gun it on the straight. 9/10 drivers in my experience do this. I overtake nearly evey car I get behind asap on the country roads, as I know I'll start yo-yoing. Get past and stay at a constant 100-110kmh and they are immediately left behind. Funny how people who drive without cruise control don't realise you actuallly need to push the right foot down to stay at a constant speed up hills.....

 43. Lol didn't expect this many replies. Yes it was definitely tongue in cheek. He was quite a knowledgable geriatric and I did actually listen to what he had to say when he took his falsies out and I could understand him. I had to nudge him a few times as he kept nodding off. I just had this epiphany when he got the specs out. How can I trust this mans ears when his eyes are clearly kaput? That and I've seen baby boomers operate motor vehicles. Frightening......... :-) jokes.

 46. It has been a little while since I posted to this thread. I've usually just used headphones with my iPod or office setup, where some bog standard Sennheisers do the job. However things have changed quite a bit in the home rig since Christmas! A new set of Stax SR-307 Cans received as a Xmas present from Mrs HTM . I really like the new Stax range, it does everything the old range did, but with a bit more oomph in the bass. The kids provided the stand which was great. The accompanying "SRM 323S driver unit for earspeakers", or headphone amp to normal folks. The only complaint I have is that there is no mark on the volume control that I can see, which means that I need to be very cautious about the first track I listen to. Here is the rig as it currently stands

 48. Definitely. Going Under is a very cool track.. one I had never heard before because being at the end of cd2 I never got that far I downloaded a stack of his mp3s to sample after hearing Dig this Vibe in the movie Blade, but that was just the same riff in a 2min loop, and from what I skipped thru that seems to be his thing? Thunderball - Scorpio Rising - AMG review "In Thunderball's world, blaxploitation funk, cinematic soul, bossa nova lounge, downtempo dub, and downtown drum'n'bass all come together to create a hipster vibe few other groups could even aspire to, let alone create."
