Have been listening to alot Mika Vainio over the last week or so. In terms of my own musical tastes and history, his death is 1000 times more of a loss than Bowie and Prince combined. It is a little depressing that on this forum essentially dedicated to listening, a total of 3-4 people have even remarked on the passing of this sonic innovator.

Heard of his passing on another email list, known affectionately as "Joelist" from a much saddened jc morrison, he of serious and I mean serious audio, check him out!

some background on jc

as a newbie to Mika Vainio any starting point to his extensive back catalogue?

What is about Finns and their music virtuosity? Familiar with Jimi Tenor?

he's put out some fabulous albums, a total original. His collaboration with Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen is one such gem

@Ian McP I'm pretty sure both Mika and Jimi had plenty of releases on the Sahko label.

Mika's catalog is quite diverse, from harsh noise to sound experiments to austere stripped back minimal techno.

I couldn't really single anything out, @analog brother brother singled out Metri, the Pan Sonic 3CD set Kesto spans a good range. Just dive in, it's hard to go wrong. :thumb:

Thanks for the tips, saw Jimi Tenor live, here in Melbourne around 10 years ago! Sorta equal parts Sun Ra and Sly Stone, yes, really!

Have seen Sun Ra Arkestra twice also here in Melbourne, now led by Marshall Allen, a member of the band for over 50 years, he's a very sprightly 92 years old! Here's some out there electronica Arcane Device

his Ourobouris takes no prisoners! Your speakers better be up for it, contains some subterranean bass and tweeter frying top end

Garry Cawsey of Cawsey Audio introduced me to his recordings. Garry builds some very revealing bespoke amps and speakers.

Not sure where you live, if in Melbourne pay him a visit, very interesting chap! Eclectic in his music tastes and a workshop/warehouse that is an Aladdin's cave of esoterica!

Many thanks for sharing Eric.  Like Ian, I had heard of Mika's passing on another post. Having never heard any of his music, I decided to stream an album via Tidal.  I can't remember the name of the album, but it consisted almost exclusively of electronic noises and was way too dense for me to get into.

I listened to Kilo last night based on your recommendation and that was much more my cup of tea.  It has encouraged me to dig deeper into his back catalogue.  Sadly Tidal doesn't have Metri - I'll have to ask @analog brother very nicely to bring it along at our next GTG.

What on earth is this? Some kind of retrospective featuring most of his "hits" but each of them cut down to 5 minutes. Why?

Ghastly album cover too.

Vatican Shadow - Remember Your Black Day.  Streaming via Tidal

Image result for vatican shadow remember your black day

An album full of dark, uneasy and repetitive techno.  It will reward you with a fascinating listen if you're in the mood.

As recommended by David Sylvian no less, bought it the other day , the inclusion to trumpet and flugelhorn adds to the usual electronic textures

builds up nicely too, and youre right about those textures, its like a quilt pattern

Must admitt never heard of them before but they seem quite well regarded , I've had a listen to some of their other albums which are similar is nature.

they do remind a it of early Harold Budd minus the piano
