Got up this morning and found no 7HD main channel any more, just the SD Channel, but now have 7 Mate SD on 73 and 7 Mate HD on 70 also noted on the tv guide that the AFL is slotted on 7 Mate in Adelaide tonight, any thoughts.

Yep, it's only for 24 hours from midnight to midnight to ensure the AFL tonight is shown in HD. The way they implemented it is beyond stupid. Halfway through the episode of Training Day last night in the middle of an ad break the HD channel switched to 7mate programming without any warning (even though the EPG does accurately show the change but most people including myself assumed it was an error).

And again tonight the HD channel will flip back to Seven programming in the middle of a program at midnight. The clowns at Seven really don't give a crap about anything other than their precious AFL. They could have flipped the HD channel just for the duration of the AFL match but clearly that's too hard and inconvenient for them. Screw em and their ratings.

They would be far better to take a leaf from SBS and make the Primary and 7 Mate both HD. This would save the embarrassment if that is possible of their so called technical people confused which is which,if there was a Logie for the worst network in Aust Seven would win it hands down

Seven can't make a 2nd simulcast HD channel unless they got rid of one of their SD channels first. SBS could do it because they have 2HD channels and 4 SD channels. Seven already have FIVE SD channels together with the one HD channel so there is no room to move unless they change to HD only channels with no SD simulcast which would devastate their viewer numbers.

I count 4 unless you include the racing channel, surely that takes very little bandwidth? or move all over to Mpeg 4!

The five includes RACING.COM (why would you not include it???) It's in the multiplex sucking up 2 Mbps which is half a HD channel. Seven can't dump it because it earns decent revenue for them and moving all channels to MPEG-4 just isn't going to happen any time soon. They tried with 7flix but were losing viewers so had to move back to MPEG-2. What we have now is what will stay until more older devices naturally die.

In Perth they have left 7HD on because the 2 hour time difference makes live coverage late afternoon except for Adelaide games. 7 has been advertising for this weekend they are moving the news from 6:00 pm to 5:30 and keeping the footie on 7HD.

Davmel,

The problem is that none of the HD vs SD programs are separately surveyed in the ratings. The only non-simulcast MPEG-4 program, Racing is not surveyed. As a result no one including the broadcasters know what percentage of the viewing audience cannot see MPEG-4 compressed programs.

Oztam is owned by the broadcasters as is RegTam and they have not asked their raters to answer this question.
