The all important question.

How much?

Ols

Don't quote me, but think it was round $3100. I even got the salesman to tweak the Acer as I thought it must be set up wrong, but it wasn't. The TEAC was just murdering it. I wish I hadn't seen it as, like I said, I have the Acer. I was in the store getting some speakers. Oh well, off to bed. Must stop lusting and be satisfied eh?

Genuinely 1080p capable? Interesting. Product page here.

Of course, after my last experience, I would never buy a TEAC  And what was the signal feeding the Acer? What exactly was wrong with the Acer picture? Was it HD/SD? DVD? What was the source material? Inquiring minds want to know!

The salesman at JBHiFi confirmed that the 42" (and the smaller sizes) handle a 1080p input via HDMI. The screens use the latest panels and the latest in graphics chips.

The design of them looks great too.

oh...and picture looks great!

I plan to get one at let you know what I think of it soon.

The latest TEAC LCD's have been discussed on a few threads, so here is a summary of what we know.

Some info and RRP as advised by TEAC to myself back in May,

Size Model number Resolution RRP

32" LCD3233A 1366x768 $1999

37" LCD3733A 1366x768 $2999

42" LCD4233A 1920x1080 $3999

The 32" model was reecently purchased for $1470, see here.

The 42" model has been seen with a sticker price of around $3100 as noted earlier in this thread.

The user manual can be found here.

There is also one or two smaller sized models.

There is also some discussion on the 1080p capability of the units on this thread here.

Unknowns regarding 1080p capability of the 42" model include,

1) Will it display 1080p material at native 1920x1080 resoultion via HDMI>DVI from PC ?

2) If is does, will it do it "out of the box", or will it require tweaking like the Acer and the Pyrod 37" 1920x1080 models did ?

Also, back in June I contacted the TEAC office over here in Perth regarding the new 42" and if memory serves me correct they said they would have one on display. TEAC have offices in the four largest capital cities, so for anyone who wants to check the unit out it might be worth giving their office a ring to see if they have it on display.

Both were showing the same picture. I asked the salesman what they were running off and he said a HD Hard Disk, so I assume both the Acer and the Teac were getting a HD signal.

went out trying to find one of the 42" panels to look at last night but could only find 32" and 37" at a few stores, each retailer said their stock of the larger hadn't arrived yet.

I'm looking forward to checking it out, but there's still the nagging feeling that I shouldn't be looking at anything Teac, since I've also had bad luck with them in the past.

The aesthetic of the panel, which I'm assuming is the same design as the 32" and 37", I'm not too crash on. looks sort of cheap, but I suppose its the picture that really counts so we'll see

I saw the new 32" at my local Good Guys, and was actually impressed with the picture quality. The blacks were very black. I have preconceptions against teac too, but felt myself drawn to the picture... I thought it was at least on par with the Samsung

Not really relevant but I had a Teac 68cm CRT which lasted 10 years. Crap picture but good quality.

But then again it was a CRT. With plasmas/LCD we'll have to wait and see...

I guess everyone has different experiences, but I've had 2 TEAC products over the years and they were amongst the most reliable. I wouldn't hesitate to buy again, especially this LCD TV having seen the picture on it.

Dont TEAC locally re badge Prima/Xoeco sets made in china using tawanese panels (CMO i think). However this set looks exactly like a AMOI (again chinese) model.

We could verify supplier, then O/S forums will show us how the sets perform

http://www.amoi.com.cn/html/products_detai...D0%20LC-42HWT3P

btw a previous 37" 1080HD amio got quite a good rap on a european forum here

oh, and dont forget any chinese or greek site can be read with

This is, without a doubt, the same set - looks like you've found the supplier, brains  Nice work

The specs for the two units are identical, except for a few minor differences in inputs, and as you point out they're physically identical. There is an english page (so it's not necessary to babelfish the chinese amoi site), but amoi have done something weird with their links, so it's not possible to link directly to it. Start at www.amoi.com, and navigate (via the 'Products' link) to the Elite Series LCD TVs if you want to look for yourself. But the model numbers that are relevant are LC42T1E, LC42T1S and LC42T6U (obviously for the US market as it has an ATSC tuner). There are a lot of hits for the 'E' model on Google but most of them seem to be in German. Haven't had time to sift, but looks like there may well be some useful info out there.

Edit: restricting the google results to english only results in practically nothing, and most of the hits in German (also some other euro languages such as French) appear just to be price listings. Maybe somebody else can find forum discussion or similar if they try?

Thanks Jakes,

just goes to show what a team effort can achieve

on ur global link is a specification page that confirms all panels in the 37" and smaller are made by AUO, and the big one (42") is CMO.

The CR is quoted as 1000:1 but i cant tell if this is static or dynamic. The CMO panel that should be in the set is here:

http://www.cmo.com.tw/cmo/english/product/...=20050408182850

and it says 1000:1 so im guessing its static.

If the set has any dynamic backlight control the CR will be higher in real use (like 1600:1 etc)

This panel is already in the market in these two TV sets:

Further UK review questions black levels (there goes my dynamic backlight idea!)

http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread....;highlight=amoi

Right... Another 42" amoi user.... I picked mine up today and have quickly hooked it up. No 1080p review yet but I can review the rest.... I am ultimately comparing this to the SAMSUNG LE26R51 since this is the only other model I own and have detailed knowledge of. Also, it is a proven model that has received exceptional reviews.

First of all, the build quality of the amoi isn't as bad as I expected. The unit is solidly built and doesn't look bad at all. It isn't as eye catching as my samsung but it does have a similar feel to the Toshiba in terms of design. You get the standard european kettle lead and adapter but I opted to use a spare UK kettle lead instead.

Out of the box, the colour configuration and brightness isn't too bad although some tweaking is necessary to get the optimal output. The greating page is a bright blue background with the words amoi in the center which allows you to have the first scan for any dead pixels. None so far! Start up time is comparable to the other LCD's - a slight delay before it switches on but this is to be expected on such a large set.

Composite video for Digital SD source was quite acceptable. No worse than the samsung and at times better which I was quite suprised by especially since this is a much larger screen and also has the higher resolution panel. You would expect it to perform slightly worse but I can assure you this was not the case. I was expecting this to be the worst part of the TV but I am pleasantly surprised to find that it performs just as well as the bigger brand names. Some grainy flashes are all that you have to put up with on slow moving images. The problem is with fast moving images - artefacts are massively noticeable. Some channels on freeview however were horrific and I was not able to watch them because the picture quality was just too poor. Also there was excessive artifacts on text whilst the upscaler kicks in.

Next I hooked up my DVD player, via scart and composite. No matter what configuration, the output was very similar. RGB on EXT 1 was actually the worst of all which made me scratch my head. The DVD I chose was eXistenZ since it is quite a colourful movie but also has its fair share of dark scenes. The upscaling was excellent and I was hard pushed to see any real artifacts. I would be suprised if an upscaler DVD player over HDMI could do any better. Blacks were impressive and definitely not a downside to this TV...

720p over VGA was excellent. The colours were crisp and the response time left a clear image without ghosting or blurring. The few demos I was able to view left me suitably impressed and it was at this stage I realised I had definitely made the right decision purchasing the amoi instead of the Toshiba 1080i or waiting for the overpriced Sony.

PRO's... Sublime HD display. Clear, crisp colours and easy to use menu system. Nice blacks. The inbuilt speakers gave a rich sound that you would expect on a much more expensive model. Impressive Upscaling for standard DVD movies. The panel is superb and out of the box it displays better than the standard rack of LCD's and Plasmas on show at your local currys...

CON's... Not as flashy as its more expensive counterparts, no SD card slot on the standard model either. Only one HDMI input. VGA could not display 1080i or 1080p images. 720p was the best I could get. Vertical and Horizontal alignment options were let down by the lack of a stretch/collapse option which meant at some resolutions part of the screen was cut. Full screen stretches 4:3 more at the edges to give the center picture more realistic view but the upshot of that is a much more deformed image off center shot. This was only on the full screen for 4:3 - all other display options appeared fine. This may be considered a bonus for some people, I just didn't like it.

The remote is quite tacky and light and the stand looks cheap.

OVERALL... At the moment I can honestly say this is a good panel irrespective of its 1:1 pixel mapping at 1080p input capabilities (which I have yet to experience). Even without those things this is still a good quality panel. I can't wait to try these out and see how it compares to 720p (which was very impressive I'd give it 7/10 at the moment.... without seeing the 1080p.

Thanks for tracking that stuff down - will read it with interest. The review/comments you pasted inyto your post make this sound like a reasonable proposition (although the lack of 1080p via VGA is a disappointment, but if it's possible to achieve via HDMI maybe it's not such a problem). However, the potential disagreement about the black-level performance means that I'd still really like to see one of these to decide for myself.

I found some more info trawlling thru the UK forums. They linked to a german forum that apparently confirms 1:1 pixel mappin on it:

"been trawling through this http://www.hifi-forum.de/viewthread-133-2418-7.html

German thread on the Amoi 42" and it seems some people have a 1:1 pixel mapping over HDMI. But Google translator is not that good so i may be mistaken.

Here are some good pictures from someone on the thread:

http://cchrisc.cc.funpic.de/Pics/Amoi_LCD_paragon/

It shows what looks like a 1:1 pixel mapping

The user paradog says that the TV supports 1:1 pixel mapping exactly. He also says he played counterstrike at 1080p and watched a couple of HD trailers in 1080p and the effect was fantastic.

He also asks the question - why is it much cheaper than the sony? And reasons perhaps this is because of build quality, the electronics and the name sony, the latter being the biggest difference.

Someone else says they saw it at 1080p and it looks great, and the TV displays great at all other resolutions too.

Just over half way down on page 5, this comes out of the Google translator:

"i assume, for now, the only post office here that CAN 100% confirm this tv does the 1080p with 1:1 pixelmapping (on the hdmi and Y Pb Br connection only) is #158 from SPB_AG, the distributor OF this tv for europe. in this post office, they´re telling that´s absolutly possible, RK 50hz and 60hz. if you the right equipment got anyway. they where using A GeForce 6600GT and A 7800GTX with nVidia more driver 91,31. OTHER members here, including ME, quietly testing tons of GET this properly done."

Which i think means it does 1080p at 50Hz and 60Hz - the translation is very bad."

thanks for your detective work guys, this one is definitely sounding better by the minute and may very well be worth getting over the Samsung R series 40" I think. I hope to find one to play around with sometime next week

Let us know your findings if you do manage to track one down - and where you found it.

If anybody finds one in a shop in Sydney, please post, as i cant find any retravisions with it in stock.

Another thing about the cheaper lcds is that they all use the (now older) 72% visible range backlighting fluros. THis has been left behind firstly by Sony V, and now by samsung R with their 92% CCFLs. It really does make a difference and I believe its one of the big reasons ppl think LCD looks unnatural. The taiwanse said they were also going to catch up this year but im guessing we may not see it until some new Acer/Benq models pop out.

I've also been trying several Retravision and JB stores in Sydney with no luck finding one in the flesh yet.

Both of these stores have it on their systems, with a list price of around $3,450 but at one Retravision store the guy said over the phone he'd do it for $3,075.

I rang Retravision Malaga today and they quoted $3669. I also had time to take a quick look at the unit at a store from the same chain in Osborne Park. There was an AFL game on at the time and the unit seemed to handle motion as well as the surrounding units. I thought the picture looked average at close range though (no worse than the surrounding LCD units though).

I was floored by the ticket price however. At $4499 it was $500 above the RRP. It was not the only flat screen in the store with a ticket price above RRP.

Here are some good pictures from someone on the thread:

With regard image "DSC05795 (Custom)" from the above link showing a web page, the icon sizes in the windows bar at the bottom of the sereen compare well with a Dell 24" at native (1920x1200). It is certainly much higher resolution than 1366x768. It looks like 1920x1080 to me.
