Here is a recent acquisition tube output Akai 1710w reel to reel that I recently found in as new condition with no wear whatsoever. It did have its share of issues however which explained why it probably ended up unused in a cupboard. Typical of all akai decks of this era the pot metal cams had all disintegrated but I worked out that a set of later 4000 series cams will work with simple mods. One of the capstan motor start caps was short probably due to the unit being on the 220v tap as this is critical. This deck dates from 1967 to 1969 and features a tube output stage with built in speakers and it is surprising how good 6 watts of tubes sound. Not a bad find for 50 bucks and some effort. Cant believe there is one currently listed on ebay for $1000.

Listening to Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald.......stunning sound and a real surprise for a single motor consumer deck.701802bbca4e05472853d6d57a9776c8.jpgf24219093ed6cd2d76bb251604df0c7c.jpgdc5bdd3e499a37e1d46d4eebcde345c9.jpg
