Why Opinions expressed at GTG's can be misleading

Recommended Posts

Apart from GTG,  anyone sipping  their favorite alcoholic beverage while listening  is seriously compromising their ability to listen effectively.

Below is a report ( also on Podcast) from Dr Karl who explains the  direct link between alcohol in the bloodstream and hearing impairment.  The loss is not consistent throughout the frequency range either it seems .   I would say that this phenomenon could explain  why a lot of crazy opinions are expressed  while drinking at GTG's  (or elsewhere).  Of course, if that's the   way of listening all the time, then  the results will be consistent.

A lot of hearing was lost around the 500-1,000 Hz range - which are frequencies where a lot of speech happens.

Maybe it's just our brain being smart, trying to make sure we don't listen to any bad suggestions while we're 'under the influence'.

I've actually been more concerned with pics showing the table the drinks sit on. Shallow reflections admittedly, but an indication of priority nonetheless.

I completely agree that our ability to discern fine differences is greatly hampered by alcohol, but also agree that the 'normal' state of listening is an important consideration.

There are definitely things to be heard and felt when the seriousness of extreme focus is relaxed, and the mind can make comparisons and associations with past experiences of listening - to either or both music and hifi equipment.

It does but only to your brain. When I drink a lot I can dance.

A small intimate evening GTG was held on Wednesday with a few of the regulars : @:) al , @Martykt , @Red MacKay , @blybo the host of course and myself.
Evening commenced with some top quality Wood fired pizzas and washed down with quality reds

al looks torn between taking a pic or diving for a slice !

The rarest of rare occurences caught on camera - Red with a red ! (akin to my collecters item pic of @djb drinking water)
He's thinking one more photo and things are turning ugly !

@Martykt snaffling the last slice !

Mine host chewing fat with al

After dinner sat down to hear the aesthetically beautiful Spatial Hologram M3 Turbo S, quite a mouthful and a lot of speaker !
we listened with a few good demo albums, (Air - Pocket Universe, Gotye - Making Mirrors) and there was a lot to like with the sound quality, two 15" woofers more than capably reproducing down very low and very nice non fatiguing sound overall !

Here we see Red getting his head stuck in it's rear end !

And have a gander at the size of these beauties !

For those that lingered well into the early hours of the next morning (ahem Marty) we were treated to stunning home cinema with high definition from the JVC projecter providing razor sharp images.
Photo in low light really doesn't capture how good it was in real life'

So a highly enjoyable mid week evening with full credit to Neil for his exemplary hospitality !

(and falling asleep on the cinema floor rather than turfing Marty and I out !)

@Marc got wind of this gig and declared it a "Non sanctioned GTG event' so hopefully no serious repercussions for blybo !

Had a largish gathering on Saturday afternoon at evil Springs to celebrate Autumn and to reunite with my audio brethren !

I was very cunning in my preparations nominating everyone to contribute in some form food wise, and boy did we have a feast on our hands!

@Tubularbells most generously cooked up a 7.5kg Beef Brisket topped off with some 2.5kg (almost) Pulled Pork -

Here we see the "Meat Maestro" in action massaging the meat into submission!
Couldn't even pick the meat up, it just fell apart was so tender!

      (Dog was never far away!!)

@illusion also rose to the occasion and brought some freshly marinated Chicken wings and legs , as a bonus he even cooked them up himself !
      Beautiful flavors too.

Unfortunately my normal photographer was otherwise occupied with trivial family matters (not naming anyone @:) al)  so very few quality shots to display of the attendees:
      @[email protected]@[email protected]@darth [email protected]@[email protected] [email protected]@Point [email protected]@Red MacKay and Doug Tipping.

Smile for the camera - everyone !

      That means you @Sierra !!!

      Hitchcock scene from Birds !
All eyeing @djb waiting for an opportunity to strike ("he'll never see us coming!)

Ultrasonic record cleaner Masterclass by TB with @Red MacKay & @joz
Brought up my records to flawless condition without a hint of crackle - pity no one else got a chance to have theirs cleaned !

Unfortunately no pictorial evidence of numerous salads and desserts most generously brought along but was heartily demolished along with all the meat ! (gasp)

Bugg3r all of system either but you've probably seen it enough times - here's one of The Wand recently fitted to my LP12 and sounding very nice too!

So had a fantastic afternoon with a few kicking on till nearly 11pm - my thanks to everyone for making it such a success and all I need now is someone else to hold a GTG for a change !
Nah, it's all good fun !

P.S. We missed you Billy !

Hello everybody!  You've seen the system showcased, now it is time to hear it.  (Refer Showcase your System MG20.7).

This GTG will be held on Sunday 10 April starting at 2.00PM.  The most convenient way to get here would be by train to Richmond Station.  If you drive, there is a pay carpark at the head of the street, which should have spots available as there is no footy at the MCG on that day.

If you are into planar speakers, this is one of the best.  They will be expertly set up with DWM woofers by Bill McLean, who will come down all the way from Sydney to do the demo.

Tea & coffee and basic nibblies will be provided.  You will need to BYO drink if you want anything more exotic.

Attendees will be limited to 15.  Attendees to this stage are:

We are excited to soon be releasing our Nullaki Opus.  This loudspeaker replaces our previous flagship, Nullaki, and features considerable changes to the bass configuration and crossovers.  We are proud to say that it is a truly special loudspeaker, and quite an experience.
We will be hosting an evening in Perth to present this model for the first time and are pleased to extend an invitation to all StereoNET members, as well as our Facebook fans.  This will be held early January, and we are currently awaiting venue confirmation.

The listening will be complemented by some very nice Western Australian wines.

If you would like to attend then please register your interest via reply to this thread or PM.

I will be in touch with the Jones boy to confirm how many people his family's abode can cater for during the 2016 event.

I remember 1 year there was 'bout 30 add, but that was quite a strain on resources like showers, water etc.
We didn't seem to run out of alcohol though

I know 2 people who will be there in 2016...
