Citroen
Try this test preferably not via your computer's headphones/speakers http://www.npr.org/sections/therecord/2015/06/02/411473508/how-well-can-you-hear-audio-quality I was very surprised that the 128 mp3 were not clearly inferior to the wav files
firedog
yes, but it much depends on the type of music and recording. acoustic music - strings and percussion relatively easy to tell them apart. electronic music - much more difficult modern, heavily processed and volume compressed music - also difficult. In fact, anything heavily volume compressed it becomes more difficult to differentiate, as you lose some of the ability to differentiate quieter detail and nuance, which is a large part of how you tell them apart. Minoan
Got 5 out of 6 right. I could hear the difference between 128kbps and WAV but there's not much in it. With 320kbps and WAV it was very difficult to pick. The WAV samples had a very slight bigger soundstage and cleaner top end. But again, very hard to pick. For mobile devices 320 kbps is the go. For home CD quality or higher.Sent from my SM-A300Y using Tapatalk

custom_made
I got 4/6 through my crappy computer speakers. The 2 incorrect picks were both 320k. Found it fairly easy to determine the 128k file.. harder for the 320k and wav. Will have to give this a shot on the hifi. Thanks for the link

I'd forgotten about Godwin Grech until your post. I remembered the name but 'Utegate' had long disappeared from the memory.
