Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band: 50th Anniversary box set

Recommended Posts

'Summer Of Love' written by Sir George Martin is a companion book to fantastic documentary 'The Making of Sgt. Pepper' included in the 6 disc super deluxe release.

It's a great read for anyone interested in the creative process of recording this classic album.

Looks to me that the 2017 remix was done for the i-pod/ear-bud crew, so they don't blow their ears out with dynamic passages.

Cheers George

The August 2017 issue of Sound On Sound Magazine [on sale at Newsagents around Australia now] has a very in depth article about the remastering of the 50th Ani version of SGT Pepper, complete with screen shots of the copied 4 track Master put into Pro Tools, and the way they remastered it, and why.

https://www.soundonsound.com/magazine/2017-08

Apparently the Mono version use Varispeed on the tape deck to pitch shift vocals that the Beatles though sounded wrong, this never occurred for the stereo mixes, but has been done for the remastered version of the stero mix, lot's of other little small changes were made, which are all explained by Giles Martin and Sam Okell who did the remastering.

Straight from the horses mouth, you won't get any better info than this.

  Hey George

When you played and listened to the Sgt Peppers remaster - how did you think it sounded?

I haven't heard it, the DR Loudness site has proved to be right on many others I have heard, it's become the bible to me now, I can't see it being wrong with this either.

Cheers George

"During mastering we tried to hit that middle ground, keeping the older fans happy, who I’m sure already think this is too loud, but also to make the mixes work in a modern context." ... from the Sound on Sound article. Mainly interested in the surround with the 24/96 - I think the surround mix will suit the album.
