rolling_jj
Hi there, I'm looking to upgrade my set-up (crappy Sony plastic turntable from the early '90s and a '70s Pioneer amp that's gone crackly in the left channel) and a friend has offered to sell his refurbished Sony set-up (see pics). I'm only after the turntable and amp but he wants to sell both with the speakers for $800 ono (he bought for $1500 last year). Wondering if anyone would be kind enough to tell me if this is a decent set-up, and decent value for money? Thanks!
zero1
Nothing wrong with the above system, but at $800 you'd be able to buy a much much better amp and turntable either through the classifieds here or the other usual auction site etc. Plenty of good advice & helpful people on here who are usually more than happy to help guide you if you're trying to piece a system together. What speakers do you currently use? Edited April 18, 2017 by zero1
Mungbean66
Does it have to be vintage or are you just looking for decent quality?Sent from my HTC 2PS6200 using Tapatalk
Zaphod Beeblebrox
NO. Not good value for money at all.
EV Cali
Your friends set up has a nice vintage look to it, but I do not think he would be able to achieve $800 if selling ,more like $500 ,for all the items together, on a good day. The Audio Reflex is not a great Direct Drive TT and would have been considered an entry model when new about 1976 . You could get a better amp and TT for $800. PeteD
God only knows how much life is left in that fascinating, yet ancient gear your friend is selling. Furthermore, the many advances in technology and bang for the buck since those good old days mean that you can get a system with full warranty (if buying new gear) that would sound way, way better. For example, the components listed below would suit a smallish room and provide more than acceptable sound quality:- Pro-Ject Essential II Turntable - $400 Yamaha A-S201 integrated amplifier - $450 NAD D8020 bookshelf speakers - $
EV Cali
Although I am usualy happy to take a chance with pre loved gear, the Yamaha A-S201 integrated amplifier recomended by @PeterD is presently on sale at Adicted to Audio in Sydney for $344 https://addictedtoaudio.com.au/products/yamaha-a-s201-stereo-amplifier?variant=16063963523&gclid=CP2x55Skr9MCFZIJvAodUKwA0A That would leave you about $450 to spend on a second hand TT
Mungbean66
I have the older R-S300 which I still use in my second system. Amazing little unit with a great sound and able to drive most speakers.Pair it with some QAcoustic speakers. Good system for not a great deal of money.Sent from my HTC 2PS6200 using Tapatalk
