Power Cords for Analogue Tube Preamp and Phono

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Does anyone have any advice on the whether there are different requirements for a phono or preamp power cord compared to ones that are good for the power amp or other components?

What qualities do you look for when considering a cord for the preamp/phono stage? Is it different to a cord for a power amp?

Thx, Bob

Experience with my own DIY power cables has been that effective screening (100% foil & braid) and a quality conductor insulation like Teflon or polyethylene provides the most improvement in terms of lowered noise floor and improved definition when powering source equipment. Conductor wire gauge is less important and around 1.5mm to 2.5mm CSA seem to be adequate. I can't comment on the influence of different plating materials on the plug or IEC connector pins as the Aus/NZ compliant one's I use are only available in brass and the only other option is Furutech which are too expensive for my needs.

I've been unable to verify that they are certified for use in Australia and NZ. Neither MCRU in the UK or Martin Kaiser themselves have responded to my queries regarding AUS/NZS compliance. They are quite limited in the cable size they can accommodate so I'm not particularly interested in them.

one false move DIY ing power plugs with say this http://www.ebay.co.uk/bhp/screened-mains-cable
and your screen/foil becomes live! Are you 100% sure your earth wire is actually earth?
regards Ian

Seriously - if you are not sure then you shouldn't be going anywhere near mains cable DIY anyway. I think foil or no foil - you are stating the obvious

Hello Everyone,

Gee.. looks like this conversation has gone a bit strange.

I really would appreciate your advice and help in any cables that are particularly recognised as good for the preamp and phono.

Lets keep on topic and may be we can share that info'.

Thx kindly, Bob

@muriwai Thank you for that. :)

So I'm still hoping that someone out there has a few brands and suggestions.

I'm looking at this

JPS Lab's : The Analogue AC Cable US$400

https://www.thecableco.com/Product/Analog-AC

or JPS Lab's PAC Black Power Cable US$700

https://www.thecableco.com/Product/PAC-Black

Does anyone have any knowledge or experience with these?

Thx, Bob

Bob, however sexy those US products look ... they are not certified for Oz use - and I suspect they come with US parallel-prong plugs, so won't fit our wall sockets.

So I suggest you focus on Aussie-made power cables - I have seen several cable brands mentioned on SNA (although I don't know if they have power cords in their product line-up).

For instance: Audio-Principe. KLEI, Aurealis.
