unclemack  Just check your carpet guys for what underlay they are going to use, it really does make a huge difference.

Thanks. Will do. What am I aiming for though? I know little about underlay.

UM, I'm guessing your budget is limited(like mine was) and you can't afford a specialist product so your left with the local carpet showroom guy. I'll check out exactly what brand I ended up with but for the moment , have a look here>>Dunlop

Well it's not going to detract UM, put it that way. You've been to enough GTG's, enough retail places like Tivoli and listened and you'd of heard the oft stated view that on a bare floor you should have or at least try to place a rug down.

Your not getting reflections bouncing about as much with acoustic underlay are you.

Yes fair enough. The bare floor issue is a given. Just didn't realise that underlay had further impact. Thanks mate.

Well to be honest I think your domestic carpet underlay that they title as 'acoustic' is more for flats and multi story places to stop the transference downwards and sideways of noise. Fair dinkum acoustic underlay for dills like us who think we know a bit about sounds and such is way out my budget and I'm thinking yours.

I priced an American product available here and my 5.5 by 4.5 room was prohibitively expensive, like thousands just to buy it let alone lay it.

Only a semi educated guess, but I think going wool carpet will have a bigger impact than the underlay, but both are important. Wool fibres have a larger surface area than synthetics, and a plush pile is what you want, but it does track more. When I did my HT room we simply got the best Bridgestone underlay the company offered. There are also horse hair/jute acoustic underlays if I remember correctly, but will be dependant on whether the store can source it.

I reckon you'd be better off with a basic underlay and spending the money on other forms of treatment....if budget is an issue.....if not, find the thickest commercial felt underlay known to man. It'll be quite firm to walk on though, no spring in it like a foam underlay....only used in commercial locations these days (due to cost), it provides a hard, flat, smooth base....you might have a hard time finding it though as carpet tiles are the norm now

I cant remember the cost....not cheap. Its more of a soundproofing underlay as opposed to having acoustic benefits. Its designed to go under chip board or floating floors.
