thebull
Hi guys I'm not all that audio savvy and would like some advice on matching a vintage JVC vn300 amp with some speakers. Specs for am can be found here: http://www.vintage-audio.com.ua/en/cat/217/634.html I currently have it hooked up to a pair of Sony ss-d102 speakers but sound is quite distorted when I turn the volume past about halfway. Any help would be much appreciated Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
eltech
the amp only outputs 15 watts into 8 ohms and 18 watts into 4 ohms. you need speakers with high sensitvity, eg. 95dB @ 1 watt or higher. few modern speakers will suit that amp.
thebull
Thank you eltech. How easy would it be to find some older speakers to match?Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
eltech
any speaker of any age will be ok as long as the sensitivity is high. I recommend anything above 93dB @ 1 watt. Preferably 95dB @ 1 watt. If building a 1970's system look for the following 1970's speakers with 12" woofers: Coral Kenwood Sansui JBL 1980's or 90's Audioline or Cerwin Vega speakers are also very sensitive. Some passive PA speakers also have high sensitivity. question is why persist with this amplifier? if you want that sort of 1970's aesthetic there are other 70's amps with far more power and wont cost too much. There are more choices of modern speakers that have a more refined sound than suitable 70's speakers. 70's speakers have a certain sound, which if you like, you wont find in modern speakers, but generally speaking modern speakers though lower in efficiency, tend to sound more detailed and have lower distortion. eltech
your Sony speakers look ok to me, id suggest getting a more powerful amp, even a matching 1980's Sony amp with about 80-100 watts. Are you building a new sound system or just wanting to persist with what you've got? silly as it seems amps tend to be cheaper than good speakers. Trying to find a good vintage pair of speakers will cost you more than buying a 100 watt amp.
thebull
I'm really just playing around with some gear that I picked up from a market. Amp cost me $10, speakers $5 and a Yamaha receiver for $7. For $22 bucks in total I'm pretty happy with it Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
thebull
I'll keep an eye out for a vintage with a bit more output.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
eltech
OK cool. I'm sure you will find something at a market that's suitable.
Asid
I am using Dali Zensor 1 speakers with JVC VN 300. Very happy with the performance.
