  4. I am a new user to Tidal and want to know if you can search for and then stream music of specific quality via the phone App or via any other control device. For example only music of "HiFi" or "High" quality. I have an account that allows me to stream MQA etc. I understand you can select an upper limit for streaming via Wifi or Cellular and search for only MQA quality music but could you search for only CD quality music (HiFi) or 320kbps (High) and then stream it only at this quality. On some playlists that have been automatically created by Tidal the music quality has been from MQA all the way down to Normal which is thin sounding and I would prefer to be able to filter it out automatically or set a lower cut off level for the quality. I believe Tidal will also down-sample music to your upper limit that you have set when streaming. i.e. streaming MQA or HiFi quality with streaming quality set to "High" would down sample it to compressed 320kbps MP3 when wanting to save data and/or using inferior ear-buds etc. Thanks in advance, Dean
  5. Just received this offer when checking my facebook today. On my phone it says Tidal HiFi $4 for 3 months, so my understanding is that instead of paying $72 you only pay $4. Probably for those who want to try out Tidal. T&Cs apply as usual so do check them. *Offer for new users only. Not available in all regions. Total discount varies per region and depends on the plan you choose. Your TIDAL subscription will begin immediately, and your payment method will be charged the promotional amount. After the promotional period expires, your subscription will automatically renew at the standard monthly rate for your region and chosen plan.
  6. Hi there team, Looking for some advice (for a friend) running Windows 10, looking for a Tidal-integrated player that supports MQA. He was originally using Audirvana but the trial has ended, the Tidal desktop app is a little lacking comparatively. Are there any free players out there that have Tidal integration, and also support MQA? Just looking for some options to test out against the Tidal-app, while he waits for paycheck to secure Audirvana! Thanks as always all, David

  8. So this was a little relatively inexpensive experiment. It’s a Raspberry Pi audio server. The main OS is RuneAudio (http://www.runeaudio.com) which is a web based OS. Once the OS is installed onto the RPi you can control it all via a web browser that is on your home network. It works with an iPhone/iPad or anything that has web browsing capabilities. What’s great is that it’s freeware so your setup costs are really low. While it has a headphone socket for audio output, I wouldn’t recommend it at all, the quality is really low. It really excels when it is connected to USB DAC. I’m fortunate enough to have an excellent DAC built into my Amp, which is why I tried this experiment. It plays pretty much anything - MP3, AAC, AIFF, FLAC. Apparently it will play DSD but I haven’t really tried that because the music I mostly listen to isn’t available in that format. I have a large (128gb) USB drive plugged directly into it with the majority of my music. It will also connect to a NAS music server as well. But I mainly use it to stream Tidal and through a bit of experimenting it works really well. You’ll need an additional piece of software as RuneAudio doesn’t natively support Tidal, it does support Spotify, but I don’t use that so I can’t vouch for how all that works. For the iPhone I use an app called McConnect which fully supports Tidal. There’s a free version which works fine, but I got rid of the ads and went for the main version, and its reasonably cheap at under $10nz The RuneAudio OS is really quite easy to install and even for a complete novice I had it sorted quickly. Side note: I did have issues with the wifi but the RuneAudio forum guys were really helpful and I had it resolved quickly. If you have a USB DAC or input into your system it is a cheap little experiment to try. A raspberry Pi 3 board is around $60-70, I bought a complete starter kit from PBTech for $100ish. Which comes with a Micro SD Card, power supply and case. It does have Wifi built in, but if you want a stronger signal I would recommend a USB Wifi Dongle which are around $20+ Once I had that running then I started to experiment with accessories, every audio enthusiasts dream. I started with a Wireworld Ultraviolet 7 USB Cable which a: looks cool and b: helps get the best signal out of the Raspberry Pi. I upgraded the power supply to iFi Power Pack which is specifically designed for the Raspberry Pi, that has made the most significant difference. It may not look like much but it takes the background noise to virtually nothing. I also went for a iFi iPurifier 2 USB connector which galvanises the signal so it is a strong and as pure as possible. How does it all sound now? Stunning - Tidal will play FLAC master files and the clarity is great and the added accessories just help that clarity even more. You probably don’t need the iPurifier but a good USB cable and the iFi Power pack are well worth the investment. I think in total (minus the iPurifier) I spent around $300. So for sound for pound so to speak its a winner in my books.
  9. http://tidalhifi.com/au A new lossless music streaming service has just launched in the US. $20US/month and can be accessed if you have a VPN. Unlimited access to over 25 million tracks. The selection is pretty good, I found most of the artists that I've been listening to recently (with the exception of FKA Twigs and Bored Nothing). I haven't had a chance to listen to it yet as I'm at work, but my housemate says the sound quality is excellent. We've been using Spotify for streaming and downloading FLAC to listen to through Audirvana, but he says this sounds excellent, and he wasn't expecting it to sound much better than what we currently use. Also has high definition music videos, and curated editorial content, such as articles, features, and playlists from music journalists. Very excited about this! Edit: Also available in the UK
  10. One of the topics that comes up time and time again are the playlist selections by exhibitors at HiFi Shows. So without getting into debates about why Diana Krall, Stimela, Hotel California, Nils Lofgren should not be played (not necessarily my opinion, but one that seems to repeat itself after shows) this thread is to suggest just 3 specific tracks each you would like to hear at a HiFi Show. Here's your chance to have your say. To help us find them and maintain a playlist, please reply in this format: Artist - Track (Album if known)

  12. Hello there, Some of you may remember my journey into buying a 2 channel system. I'm very happy with my purchase, however, I'm just wondering if any of you have any experience in using cheap USB DACs. As part of my Primare NP5 streamer purchase I was gifted a free three-month trial for Tidal Hi-Fi (thanks @gwurbfor bringing this to my attention). When streaming via Chromecast and Apple Airplay through the NP5 I am unable to stream Master quality (this isn't a bad thing as Hi-Fi quality is still sounding good and is better than the quality through Spotify). However, should I want to listen to Master quality albums on my MacBook through my Audiolab 6000a, what is the best way of doing this without paying too much. I was going to buy a 3.5mm to Toslink cable but then found out that my version of Mac no longer has analog/optical audio out through the headphone port (good ol' Apple). And I don't think my Galaxy Note 9 can do this through its headphone port. I have been looking online and it looks like I could potentially run a USB - S/PDIF from my Mac to the amp. I'm assuming I can pass audio from my Mac to the amp this way. If so, I've found the following device and was wondering if anyone here has used it before and if so will it achieve wha ti want it to? Or are there other cheap alternatives out there? Signstek HIFI USB to Coaxial S/PDIF Converter Convert Digital to Analogue Signal Mini USB DAC PCM If I were to use this one would the DAC in my amp be used for the audio and not the DAC in the device? The other alternative is to get a jack to RCA cable and plug my Note 9 to the amp that way. I'm guessing this would affect the quality of the music, or am I wrong here? Many thanks
  13. Just wondering if anyone else is having major issues with Tidal and or their Bluesound this weekend or over the past week? Constant buffering when streaming Tidal either using cellular data out and about or at home via bluesound (which is hardwired via ethernet) A mate who lives over an hour away having same issues using Tidal and his Bluesound and am wondering if others have issues too? Spotify and Qoboz work no issue via the Bluesound but Tidal works fine for my mate using his Yamaha so is the issue a Tidal and Bluesound compatability thing or more a Tidal issue given streaming tidal to my phone presents issues too. I have sent a requet to Tidal and am waiting for a reply. All the usual checks been done re connections etc, I am confident that is not the problem given my net speed and all other wired or WiFi devices in the home work flawlessly. Will be interested to see if anyone else has been paying for the privage of frustration this weekend...
