  4. Hi Guys, Ok, so I am using almost 20-25 year old TV cabinet which I had picked it up from street. It has been with me ever since and it is there as a reminder of my humble beginning. It has hosted my first TV purchased from Flemington markets to all the way to 60 inch 4k HDR LED TV and now has Center channel on top of it. So far, it had been doing its job just right as it also had a space for AVR in the bottom rack and a space for a bluray player. Over the years, the system evolved and one AVR grew into Pre/Pro + Power amps, and the TV cabinet had no space for the amps. No problems, I just stuck the power amps on side on floor on top of some wooden planks stacked on top of each other and worked fine for a while. But things got interesting few weekends back. One of my friend's toddler climbed over both power amps and was reaching for some toy that was on top of one of the floor stander. Luckily both the child and power amps survived. But that got me thinking, that this will not do in a long run, as I also have a 3 year old daughter and 1 month old son and the HT room also serves as a toy room (Dangerous combination). I started looking around for some AV racks which needed to be either short enough to host three components and centre on top or wide enough to host two components side by side as any taller and they would block the TV. Unfortunately, proper AV racks costs just as much as a power amps with their amazing quality to improve the sound and provide total isolation. Also I did not want to replace my current cabinet with sentimental value and wanted to keep it. Alas, IKEA came to rescue. This thing was perfect for my needs. Just stacked the AVR and power amps in corner of the room and left the current cabinet as is with Centre channel on top. Each shelf is rated for 100kg each so no problems there and has plenty of space on sides and on top for proper ventilation. Each components are on resting on top of Whites anti-vibration pads (Bigger) + Wooden plank + Whites anti-vibration pads (smaller). All up this costs me $130 ($90 for rack, $20 for wooden plank cut in three pieces, $20 Whites anti-vibration pads). Oh! I have installed the X brace in the front, hopefully that stops kids touching it and leaves me room in the back to change around cables and stuff. What do you guys think?
  5. I wanted a cheap but sturdy rack that housed all components and my records. The IKEA Lack table hifi rack hack is quite popular and you can find various versions posted on the internet. I decided to give it a go, with a few variations of my own so that it was sturdy (and heavy) and would hold records. What i used: 6 x IKEA Lack Tables 22 x wooden dowels (each approx 50mm/2 inches long) 1 x tube of PVA wood glue hard wood lengths to go inside hollow table legs Tools 1 x drop saw (mitre saw) 1 x electric drill 1 x bench vice (to hold legs when drilling the holes for wooden dowels) Here is what i did: Measured height of each audio component and made a little sketch to show dimensions of finished product. I left a bit of space to allow for air circulation, with more space over my amp than other components. Cut the legs of each Lack table set to suit required height. I put gaffa tape around the leg where the cut was to be made to prevent any splintering/chipping of the white surface. A handsaw, jigsaw or circular saw will not to the job (i tried this on a test piece before remembering i had a dropsaw in the shed). I filled the hollow legs with lengths of hard, solid wood (from an old balustrade that i had dismantled a few years ago) and wedged and glued them in. They fitted quite well, but i still had to wedge and glue them in. Drill holes on the bottom of each table leg, and at each corner of the table top surface. This is for the wooden dowels that will hold each table together. Remember not to drilll the table top of the top unit (the one your turntable sits on). Using a drill press will make sure your drilling is perfectly vertical and accurate. I didn't have a drill press, and managed ok. Make sure you measure where your holes are going to go, and use a drill bit so that the wooden dowel will fit snug. You can now start assembling each individual table. The lack tables come with some double screws to fit the tops of the legs to the underside of the tabletop. Each assembled table can now be fitted together in the order you require, with a length of wooden dowel to hold the table to the one above it. I made sure the wooden dowel was tight in the hole as i didn't want to glue them (in case i want to change the order of each unit at a later date). Each tables come with plastic bases. Throw most of them away, and fit four plastic bases to the legs on the lowest unit (the one on the floor) I used a spare bits of legs to put in the addition vertical 'leg' so that records can be held upright properly (see photo) I used spare bits of leg to make cable tidy that go at the back. I used a 35mm drill bit to make the holes in the table tops and for the cables to exit the legs (see photo). [note the photo was taken during test assembly and the units aren't pushed together properly. The finished product is very neat with no gaps]. Here are some tips: Measure at least twice Put a cloth around peices you hold in a vice so not to damage the white veneer Don't tighten vice to much label front and back with a pencil, so anything less than perfect gets hidden at the back Do a trial assembly before any gluing lack-side-table.pdf

  7. Hi, I would like any advice from experienced members concerning the installation of my system on Ikea Kallax shelves. http://www.ikea.com/au/en/catalog/products/80275849/ After much deliberation I've decided to place an Ikea Kallax shelf on top of the mantlepeice in my studio. (see photos) The fireplace is all in Marble, so very heavy and relatively good in terms of minimizing vibration from the floor. The mantlepiece itself was too narrow for my amp and TT, so the kallax shelf positioned on top increases the depth by 10 cm, and I can now place my system, albums in a relatively compact space. Question - I am wondering wether I should isolate the entire shelving system from the mantlepiece? ie. either via sorbothane feet or somekind of rubber matting akin to that found on turntable mats? I will also have to house my phono pre amp, dac and rega TTPSU on the shelf. I'm now living in France and there is a good online store Audiophonics that supplies spikes, feet and isolation equipment, if anyone is interested in having a look and letting me know if there is a good product to use: http://www.audiophonics.fr/en/spikes-feet-c-39.html#/ I will also have to attach the shelving system to the wall for security. Any advice is more than welcome. Good to be back on the forum after a few months transition settling in overseas. Cheers, Miles

  9. Hi All, This is a totally random question but I was wondering if the collective knowledge of the forums could help me out. About 10 years ago, I got wooden CD-storage boxes from IKEA. They fit about 60 CDs, and have cut out handles in the plyboard on the ends for carrying them. I can't for the life of me remember what the product is called. I can get photos from home, but I was wondering if anyone knew what this product was, and whether or not it is still available. Cheers
