  1. The February 2014 meeting of the Sydney Audio Club sees us once again at Dence Park for an afternoon of fine music and sound and convivial company. Each month, the Sydney Audio Club presents the finest in high end audio systems for our members and guests. It's a bit like a private audio show once a month where you can hear and discuss equipment that you might not otherwise have the chance to audition. And you can bring along your own music to test the capabilities of the system or to just share with like-minded music lovers in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. This month I am very pleased to say that we will be presenting VAF. VAF Research (refer to http://www.vaf.com.au/) has an enviable world-wide reputation for excellent design, engineering and build quality that results in excellent sound quality. The company was founded in 1978 by CEO Philip Vafiadis. The Rolling Stone magazine aptly wrote “The ultimate in high fidelity performance with the best bass in the worldâ€. That was written quite a few years ago and since then, Philip and his passionate and skilled team have continued to let innovation run free leading to constant improvement of their products. Not only will we be presenting VAF product, but Philip himself will be presenting the world debut of their brand new DC-X63 speaker. A prototype of the DC-X63 was presented at the Australian Audio and AV Show in Melbourne last October and received enthusiastic and immediate approval. The Sydney Audio Club will be the first place in the world to see and hear the very first DC-X63 production units. The VAF website has not yet been updated with detail of these new speakers. However, Philip has kindly provided a draft of an upcoming press release that he’d like to share to provide more detail of the new DC-X63: “Is the most technically sophisticated new loudspeaker under $3,000pr now Australian made? With 6 drivers precisely time aligned on 5 individually stepped baffles in a cabinet so intricate it requires robotic precision to make, the new VAF DC-X63 might be just that. “With over 10,000 owners, our DC-X loudspeaker has developed a cult like following in Australia since it was originally released in 1995. This new DC-X63 builds on this incredible legacy. Beyond an evolutionary step, the new DC-X63 is a quantum step in design, and actually mimics the way sounds are produced in real life†said VAF’s founder & CEO, Philip Vafiadis. He went on to say “Whether for music or movies we wanted the sound to be as true to life as possible. That’s very hard to do. It’s even harder in this instance as the DC-X has always been excellent value. Making it affordable simply isn’t possible while using traditional manufacturing techniques to deliver the technical sophistication we aspire to. We had to rethink everything and create something totally anew. That’s what the DC-X63 was born from.†“In the process we solved aesthetic as well as technical problems. A computer controls the machining of the profoundly complex enclosure. This houses and perfectly time aligns the 6 drivers delivering the most realistic 3D presentation of sounds of any DC-X model before it. The enclosure minimises stored energy in all its forms, so the amazingly realistic 3D presentation of sound is also very pure. An Acoustic Skin elegantly covers all this complexity. This design allows each owner to personalise the look of their speakers to compliment their room, whatever their version of beautiful might be. This way every owner gets this amazing VAF sound with a look that they can choose for themselves†With a 10 year guarantee and 30 day safe’n’sound Web guarantee, the DC-X63 is available direct from VAF Research priced from $2,999pr.†The front-end player will be the Playback Design MPS-5 SACD/CD player. This player has a modified Esoteric transport mechanism which provides excellent stability. The DACs handle up to 24/384kHz PCM. The preamp will be the Classe CP-800. This is a well-reviewed preamp/DAC that has received many accolades. The power amps will be the Plinius SA-250 and the Classe CA-400. Both of these amps are real powerhouses. The DC-X63 speakers are quite efficient, but since our room is large we like to have the extra power on hand. And of course, the tonality of the amps is somewhat different. We will decide which amp to use once we’ve evaluated the system on the day in our room. The second half of the music sessions will be our popular BYO. Members and guests are welcome to offer music to share with us all. So bring along your favourite music on CD/SACD. (Sorry, no vinyl this month.) All we ask is that the music and recordings be interesting. We'll ask you to tell us a little about the artist/recording before it is played. Tracks over 6 minutes will be faded out, to give everyone a fair go. Whether you are a novice or a seasoned veteran, you will have the opportunity to listen, learn and share your experiences with others of a similar mind. Guests are always welcome – we are a very friendly club so you don't need to know anyone to join us for an afternoon of fine music and sound. We will welcome you at the door. Venue: Epping Creative Centre Address: 26 Stanley St, Epping When: Sunday 9th February 2014 Doors open 1pm Meeting starts at 2pm Best regards, Tom Waters President Sydney Audio Club www.sydneyaudioclub.org.au tomwaters@sydneyaudioclub.org.au On behalf of Tom and the Sydney Audio club Inc. 3. VAF is opening membership today for an innovative new Club Concept, the VAF AV Insiders Club. We get to see a lot of things from a lot of brands before they are launched, and as SNA folks here tend to be, well, a little more interested than most, we thought we might share what we are doing here. It's simple: Members will get early or pre-launch information about some of the leading brands (including our own VAF of course), as well as oportunities to pre-order at very attractive pricing. To be clear, the focus will be on the latest gear, not only model run-outs. Some of the information will not be shared publically - it is exclusive. Joining is easy, just send an email to vaf@vaf.com.au with your name, address, email & phone, as well as using the words "Insiders Club" in the subject line. That's it. We'll follow up in two weeks with details about how to get the most from this innitiative
