  1. Quad ESL-63 x2 for sale In excellent condition post-refurbishment. I’ve had these ESL63s since late 2019, and have rarely had the space to deploy them in. In 2014, the ESL63s were refurbished by John Hall. Please refer to job sheet. They need another good home, I think I found a new home for them but just in case, here they are who ever commits first. Audition is possible but it may not be quite ideal due to a small room I occupy. More photos available upon request. I have rigged them up with two Quad 306, Stereo coffee LDR preamp, and a Yamaha CDR1500 and Shipping is possible at buyer expense unless I’m heading to Melbourne the expense could be shared.
  2. Looking at picking up an old pair of Leak speakers which are 15 ohms. The three spare amps that I have ( which are all 8 Ohms ) are Quad 303, Quad 405 and an Earl Watson Trinity valve @11 Wpc. i know the power output is halved when a 15ohm speaker is powered by 8ohm output, so which would be the best of my amps for the job ? Supplementary to this, I also need to power a pair of Tannoy T225 Mayfair ( which are 8ohm) so a recommendation for one of my amps would be greatly appreciated. cheers
  3. Further information: I purchased these Quad ESL 63 speakers about 4 years ago from another member. they have been cherished and carefully used. I love them but it’s time to rationalise some gear. These have had the entire John Hall restoration in 2015 and are good for another 20 years !!! As John notes. I have the receipts and paperwork as the previous owner was an absolutely fastidious audiophile (I guess that describes all of us here though right !!???) I went a step further and imported from Germany a set of original steel stands and they have industrial castors on them. These were a considerable cost but most reviewers say that without these stands they don’t really sound their best. I have loved these and I now understand why they are so revered and have the title of the “best late night speaker” with vocals these speakers absolutely blow you away I am selling a complete 2 channel set of gear so I add a photo of my set up that I am listing the other pieces will be listed separately these can be shipped (I purchased them from a member in NSW ) but local is easier (and cheaper !!) shipping at buyers expense (as agreed) thanks for looking
  4. Further Information: Quad ESL-57 Speakers Year of manufacture: 1958 and 1963 The Quad Electrostatic Loudspeaker (a.k.a. ESL-57), revered by critics the world over as one of the most natural sounding speakers ever built, may well be the most beloved speaker of all time. This pair was purchased by my father in England in the late 60s and were his pride and joy, bringing them with us when we immigrated to Australia in 1983. He fastidiously maintained them and they are in perfect working condition. They were last serviced by John Hall circa 2016. Included with the two speakers: - custom-built subwoofer, built by Chris Feillafe; - switch box to connect the sub to an amp; and - all required cables You may audition but I don’t have an amp or other components so you will need to bring them. Some background on these legendary speakers: https://www.soundandvision.com/content/quad-esl-57-original-electrostatic-speaker
  5. Further Information: Fabulous Amps that had no trouble driving my Wilson Audio Watt Puppy 8 speakers. They haven't had a lot of use I mainly used my Bel Canto Amps and reserved these for specific content. The valves haven't seen 500 hrs. I have the original boxes. Link I found on them: https://www.quad-hifi.co.uk/qii-eighty/ They are still available new. https://soundreference.com.au/quad-ii-80-valve-mono-blocks-lancaster-gray-pair/
  6. The Quad 34 Control Unit and Quad 306 power amplifier were design by Quad Electroacoustics to match each other. The pair which outputs 50 watts @ 8ohms is used to drive my Harbeth SHL5. They are in good working condition. There are some blemishes cosmetically that are consistent with the age of vintage gear but overall the pair looks fine. I'm selling the faithful pair because I'm venturing into tube amplifier based system.
  7. Further information: For sale is my pair of Quad Platinum mono blocks in superb condition with the original double boxes, so can ship Australia wide at buyers expense. We have recently downsized and I no longer have a dedicated listening space, so unfortunately these beauties have to go. Review: https://www.hifinews.com/content/quad-platinum-dmpmonos-dmp-%C2%A32500-and-mono-%C2%A32500-each My own experience: I have found them to be on the warmish side of neutral with superb tone and transient attack. Very detailed but without screaming for your attention, they are never clinical or fatiguing. They throw a wide and deep soundstage stretching well past the side boundaries of the room with a solid and well defined center image and good depth. Bass performance, however, is the star of the show here and was simply spectacular! Rhythmical and textured with real control and massive extension. These are incredibly capable and well rounded amplifiers but they may not suit if your system/room already presents as bass heavy. Before these amps my system sounded amazing with female vocals, classical, singer/songwriter stuff but lacked the excitement and drive for more modern pop/rock/electronica, for me they made it fun to listen to rock and EDM again and I've been absolutely satisfied with them for the last 5 years. If it wasn't for the lack of space in our new home I wouldn't be selling them. If your system already has good extension but lacks control, or sounds overly clinical, these may help. If you have a balanced/neutral or bright system, and you are looking for a little extra oomph and drive, then these are probably exactly what you are looking for! I could only find one review of the mono block amps (linked at the end of this ad) but there are plenty for the stereo version. As is typical with MB's the power, grip, control, imaging and separation are better than the stereo version but retain their overall character. 180w per channel into 8 ohms, doubling into 4 ohms, these will drive pretty much anything with authority, grip and extreme bass extension, but no bloat. Changing from the Simaudio Moon 340i in theatre bypass mode to the Quads almost felt like adding a good subwoofer in terms of additional bass extension. We are rennovating at the moment and my entire system is packed away so I can't demo them at my place. However, if you are seriously interested and live in Perth, I might be convinced to bring them to you to try with your speakers for an hour or two. I’m also open to the idea of swapping for an integrated or slimline pre/power of similar value/quality with cash either way for the right product. Naim/Roksan/Exposure/Hegel/ Parasound/Primare PS Audio Stellar as some examples. Happy to send anywhere in Australia at your expense. Sorry about the quality of the photo's, these are from our old house, I will add more photos as I can.
  8. Further Information: I purchased this from ‘The Fee’ in 2014. It was in excellent condition when I got it. Unfortunately, one speaker got knocked off its perch and caused some cosmetic damage (see images). The sound is perfect. See Fez's original listing at: https://www.stereonet.com/forums/topic/66111-sold-for-sale-quad-12l2-standmount-speakers-piano-cherry-finish/#comment-1118147
  9. Classic British sound power amp and preamp. Never had an issue with them since purchasing them 4 years ago. Plenty of reviews online. I have tried Quad 33 firstly but Quad 34 was a better match to my hearing. Some very small scratches on top cover but overall great condition and functionality. Will be very well packed if require shipping. Only selling together. Cables included.
  10. Quad ESL 57 Electrostatic Speakers My beautiful Quad ESL 57’s are up for sale, they are NOT matching serial numbers BUT it matters not, they were completely worked on and restored as a matched pair by John Hall the Quad guru of Melbourne. I am looking for the invoice for the date of this work. The sale will include a demo as a must, the many people that have seen & heard these playing at my house always wanted to take them home with them, you will understand why when you hear them. They come with the lovely looking dust covers. Yes they do need an iron lol. They also come with the power supply leads fitted with Bulgin plugs, they can be upgraded to IEC to make it easier to try different power cables. I have transit boxes but am loath to post preferring a demo & collection. I will be extremely sorry to see these beautiful sounding speakers go.
  11. Melbourne Audio Club monthly meeting: Wednesday 21st August, 8PM Audio Visual Revolution presents Wharfedale, Quad and NuForce 8pm Wednesday 21st August, visitors welcome. Willis Room, City of Whitehorse Offices Maroondah Highway (Whitehorse Road), Nunawading Melway Map 48 Ref G9 Contact: 9437 1249 This month’s general meeting, we return to good old fashioned two channel audio, with a presentation from England’s most recognised names in hi- fi, Quad and Wharfedale. The Australian importers AVRevolution, will be demonstrating two systems. The first will comprise of a complete family of Quad electronics and matching speakers. The second, will be Wharfedale’s latest range of floorstanding speakers matched with a new name in hi-fi called Nu Force. The Quad system comprises of a CDP Elite player with the 180w Elite integrated amp powering the Quad 12L bookshelf speakers. These two-ways house a 165mm woofer made from woven Kevlar with a conventional 25mm tweeter. The CDP Elite is more than just a CD Player, it also features a digital pre-amp with a selection of digital coaxial and Toslink optical inputs, fixed and variable to accommodate six extra digital sources. System number two will feature the Wharfedale Jade 5 floorstander, a three way speaker comprising of a 25mm aluminium dome tweeter, a 75mm ‘alu-pulp’ cone midrange driver and two 165mm woofers. The bass drivers are made of ‘Acufiber’, said to marry the responsiveness of glass and carbon fibre materials with a self dampening woven matrix. The speaker box is formed of a composite material that Wharfedale calls Crystalam. ‘Aperiodic’ cabinet loading, is another feature designed into the box. This comprises an internal port that vents into a tuned slot, which is filled with a resistive porous foam. This type of loading reduces the bass overhang common to conventionally ported floorstanders. The NuForce IA-18 amplifier is a recent model that has just landed on the Australian market this month. This unit incorporates components used in NuForces celebrated Reference Series products’, such as the same circuitry used in the P-20 flagship pre-amplifier, and two NuForce V3 power amp modules. An Audiolab 8200 CD player will be the source for this system. The unit is market ed by the manufacturer as a DAC + CD with its multiple digital inputs including a USB connection that can accept 24-bit/96kHz High-resolution audio. As you can see from this selection of Hi-Fi components, we should have an enjoyable night. 13. I'm interested in a pair of Quad 12L (or similar) something dark sounding that will be balanced out by the Cyrus one amp. Small and neat is a must. I hear that Rogers, Spendor and Proac are also good matches tonally, but possibly out of my budget. I should mention that Sonus Faber Venere range sound fantastic with the Cyrus. Other option is that anyone is interested I'd be happy to exchange a pair of Epos M12.2 in good nick. They will sound fantastic on the end of a Naim system or Creek, and a few other meaty amps with warm tone. Good condition to VGC is preferred for the bookshelves.Ta Budget is confined to what I can get for the Epos, so probably around the $500 mark.
  14. QUAD Artera - Classics for the modern age 8pm Wednesday 16th March, visitors welcome. Willis Room, City of Whitehorse Offices Maroondah Highway (Whitehorse Road), Nunawading Melway Map 48 Ref G9 Contact: 9437 1249 AV Revolution is the Australian importer for one of Britain's most recognised names in Hi-Fi. A new range of audio components from Quad will be demonstrated at this month's club meeting. For modern music lovers, the Quad Artera is the life blood of a high-performance audio system. The Artera Play is a CD Player / DAC / Pre Amp combined in a single elegant chassis. Incorporating state-of-the-art circuitry, the Play uses the 32 bit ESS Sabre DAC which can support high-resolution media up to 32 bit as well as DSD files. The unit hosts more than ample number of digital inputs, including two coaxial, two optical and USB-A, with two more digital outputs for flexibility. Analogue is addressed through two pairs of inputs. A round fascia display is also a touchscreen, multifunction source selector and volume control. Partnering the Artera Play is the matching stereo power amplifier, able to deliver 140W per channel and sporting the latest iteration of Quad's Current Dumping topology. Completing the system will be a pair of Quad Z-2 Speakers. The Z series is the premier moving coil speaker with an advanced ribbon tweeter. The Z-2 speakers 7 inch woven glass fibre cone, is especially designed with a unique double roll surround. This helps to control edge break up, giving greater transparency to the all important vocal range. The tweeter is a new design that doesn't suffer from the disadvantages of older types of ribbons their lack of power handling. Recent developments in multi-layer substrates have allowed the foil to handle higher power without burning out, and have brought the benefits of true ribbons back to the Quad family. The nights presentation will finish off with another pair of speakers, whose origins come from across the channel. The Cabasse Boras are a new brand that AV Revolution has taken on. The Bora may appear like a conventional two-way, but it isn't. Closer examination shows that the tweeter is mounted coaxially in the centre of the midrange driver, which makes this a point-source. Bass comes from an 8-inch driver supported by the reflex loading port at the base of the front panel. Not withstanding first appearances, the Bora is, in fact, a true three-way loudspeaker Sounds like we will have another interesting evening. 15. Hi guys / girls Haven't been online for a long time now. Just too busy with work. Anyway - I decided to complete the set and purchase a Quad 22 preamp to go along with the ESL57 and the pair of Quad II's. So the Quad 22 - it's old - and I don't have a clue on how to use it. What are these PU adaptors? Why are the RCA inputs so crap? etc, etc. So I'm trying to figure out what are the modifications to do to the unit to make it sound great and to also make it easy to live with in todays standards. I've sent and email to Keith Snook - he seems to be the authority. Has anyone updated a Quad 22 unit or have any recommendations on what to do and who to take it to in Australia who can do the work? TIA Ken
