Does your wife have the final say?

Not sure if this is the correct place for this thread.

Anyway my wife thinks she has a say in what I purchase Hi Fi or otherwise. To be honest I do run some things by her just to keep her happy, but I have also just purchased items and they have been in the rack by the time she sees whatever it may be. I guess I am pretty lucky in the sense that she usually gets over the initial shock very quickly(but then I rarely tell her exactly what I pay for things) I guess it helps that our house is paid for and we don't have kids(although my wife would argue that point, she thinks I am a big 47yo kid!)

So I am curious to know if you run everything past your wife before a purchase or not?

Just be careful your good wife doesn't see you replying to this thread(lol)

    Cheers.

I personally got rid of the wife then bought more equipment.
An extensive survey of my clients reveals that a lot tend to tell their wives the equipment costs half as much as actually paid then spend that amount on goodies for the missus just to keep things sweet on the home front.

I took the advice of a signature on here "it's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission" to build my own centre channel. However, the spanish side of SWMBO came to the fore and I now need to hide said speaker, in a smaller box, out of sight and take her on a w/e away. Did gain some valuable info for future upgrades though - floorstanders = OK as long as there black, silver amp/avr = OK as long as she can use remote and a cover over speakers greatly increases WAF

    Hi Sean,

My wife thinks I'm a 44 year old kid - so I think I understand!

I depends. I spend my own money on hi-fi & she understands its my hobby. I run things past her, sure.

If it fits in the rack no problem. If its a pair of speakers I always get her opinion. As our listening room is also the lounge room its only fair as everyone has to live with them. My beloved definately has vetoe rights on Large Floorstanding speakers! She likes them to look like speakers & not be too way out there looks wise eg not Giant Horns or something that looks like it landed from a B Grade Sci Fi movie from the 50's! Damn!

Then again when I bought my Duntech Viceroys in 1996 it was a toss up between them and theslightly smaller Sonique Encores - It was a tough call sonically (it took months of auditions) but there were slight differences. Luckily my wife preferred the larger Duntechs as did I

Never mention new purchases. I tend to have stuff chopping and changing all the time so she never really notices unless there are a big pair of floorstanders appearing from nowhere. Then its 'dont worry, Im sellling them' which I know will eventually be the case.

Now where I put everything is a totally different kettle of fish. THAT is the real battle.

I kinda get approval for some, but not all purchases. She didn't know about the amp I bought off a fellow SNA member until she anwered the Courier's knock on the door.

When I became interested in this hobby a few years back, I realised it may get expensive and that may cause some problems. So I managed to get agreement up front to put aside a specific amount out each pay aside just to spend on the hobby. So as long as I've saved for it, budget approval isn't an issue. Most of the time my wife doesn't really care about the equipment I buy as long as it's hidden in the cabinet, but when I bought the cabinet, that was different. That was furniture and it most definitely needed the wife's approval.

In most cases I let my wife know what I'm buying well before I buy it. If I was to get more speakers or bigger speakers then I'd also need approval . . . . these can't be hidden within the cabinet.

As I DIY, conversation like "honey should I buy 33 or 22nf for this notch filter" would never happen. So NO.

No but I know were the limits are. Equipment is generally ok as long as it fits with her sense of asthetics. Speakers are generally ok as long as they have a quality finish. I wouldn't dare buy any furniture to house it all in without her permission however. Luckily we have similar tastes.

Black boxes that fit in the rack have carte blanche. Plus due to lack of technical awareness she has no idea how much they cost - or at least doesn't ask. So the bluray player is a bluray player, and the video processor is a switch. The only thing I couldn't get away with changing would be the plasma - I almost got divorced when I bought a plasma to replace our ageing CRT.

SWMBO trusts me to research something and then buy the best I can for the buck. I tell her what it is and "approximately" how much it will cost beforehand. She has yet to say no.

Does my wife have the final say. Yes she does. But she says yes a lot too.

My wife says she doesn't mind how much I spend on my hifi because that's what I have to spend on her eternity ring, the only trouble is I don't know when my hifi system will be finished (are they ever?) so she may never get her ring.
She did however hold her tongue when I told her I had just spent $2900 on a new TT (still to buy cartridge!). But like a good sport she did arrange all the money transfers for me with gritted teeth no doubt.
I'm sure she'll think it's worth it when she here's it.

My wife is into horses......total cost to date: GOK and rising......

So, although I've got carte blanche to spend whatever I like on audio, there's NOTHING bl**dy left to do it with.

How did this happen? Might have to get some advice from Aunty Thiing.

    Cheers

I'm a bit sneaky.I tell her that the item will probably cost signifigantly more than I know it will. Then, when it costs 75% or 50% of the "quoted" price, she's more than happy.

It's never a problem buying more music.I have to control her in JB's,or she would walk out with half the store!!!

Get that dog to play the piano in public and you'll have plenty of money to spend on hifi gear!
