I'm in favour of remixes, but only in certain circumstances. A careful remix of an older recording can often yield worthwhile sonic benefits, it seems to me. I'm talking here about a remix which is done with an ear to the original recording as a reference, so as to maintain the integrity of the recording. I'm not talking about a dance club style remix, where the recording is turned into something entirely different (yuk!).
A couple of good examples of what I mean are the remixes of The Who's Tommy, and Deep Purple's Black Night on their anniversary edition CD of In Rock. The good thing about this last one is that the CD also contains the original single version of Black Night, so it is possible to compare them. The difference in sound quality and dynamics between the two versions is quite remarkable.
