I am quite impressed with the quality:
http://grooveshark.com/
According to the FAQ they stream at 192kbps MP3.
I don't think it will be long before they stream uncompressed waveforms.

My 11 year old son alerted me to this site about 3 weeks ago. Initially i thought "What's the catch?"
As far as I know there is not one.
I use it all the time and it is free to listen. If you want to download then you need to pay.
The quality seems quite good to my ears!
Think of a song you have not heard for years and it is highly likely to be there!
The legality of Grooveshark is my only concern. Then again, as long as you don't upload anything, it should be right??
Like listening to the radio.
There are heaps of internet radios out there. I haven't heard any issues in terms of legality.
What differentiate this one is simply the quality.
Of course I could be wrong.
What's in store in the next 20 years??? Perhaps one would stream analog playback at 32bit/384khz or something![]()

'Tis a very good service indeed.
Anyone been able to link Grooveshark to a squeezebox?
I looked for a solution or plug-in a few weeks ago without success.
Cheers

Yes I asked myself the same question. Wouldn't that be great?

24bit digital music has a dynamic range of an ear-splitting 144db. no need for 32bit in playback. 32-bit in recording is crucial when you accidentally break 24-bit saturation level by a drumbeat or whatever. The post-processing then allows you to limit, compress or normalise the numbers back to 0db at 24bit. In fact it is best to record music at no more than -0.2dB to allow for possible mathematical rounding errors in the variety of DACs out there.
384kHz is said to be the point at which the human hearing senses can no longer detect differences between a native analogue soundwave and the analogue soundwave manufactured from its 384kHz digital source. If that's the case, that would be wonderful but we would need a dedicated 20-Mbit link between sender and receiver to cope with the required stereo 24bit data flows.

Apparently 100Mbps is the norm in japan and korea nowadays. But what about this !

We will follow suit I assume?

According to this EMI already license Grooveshark. So most likely it is something that is legal.

It's great to see major label embracing technology like this![]()

Well so far I'm pretty impressed. Despite the relatively low bitrate of the music what I've listen to so far doesn't appear to be riddled with audible artifacts when played through my computer's soundcard, external amp and Boston Acoustics CR9s. However as members can upload music to the server I just wonder how long before it gets flooded with very low bitrate / quality MP3s?
Cheers,
Alan R.
Hi there,
I had a look/listen lastnight - so far I'm not that impressed - too many 'up-to', not enough 192kbps (at least in the tracks I tried) & it is only mp3.
Also an enormous amount of rubbish to sort through - but I'll have a look from time to time.
Boots.
Early days, but there is some promise in this type of website. Important to note that they stream "up to 192 kbps", but a lot of the files so far seem to be below this. At least they state that if multiple versions of the same song are uploaded, they keep the one with the highest bitrate. 192 kbps is still quite compressed, but it's a step in the right direction.
The question of legality is addressed in the websites FAQ's - all above board from what I can see.
With high speed broadband in Australia only a few hundred years away (), our grandchildren's grandchildren may be streaming truly high res files (and I'm talking many Mbps) in no time!
I too have been streaming from this a fair bit today.Obviously an American site.Try finding Daddy Cool on there!! Would be nice to be able to stream to hi-fi from computer!!!
Thanks for the link Gainphile
